Rather than forcing hospitality venues to check vaccine passports later this year, the Government is considering giving pubs and restaurants a ‘choice’: check the vaccination status of customers or reintroduce social distancing (that is, massively reduce profits) during ‘Covid surges’. The Telegraph has the story.
The idea is being looked at as an alternative to changing the law to mandate vaccine passports – a tougher stance that Boris Johnson warned could be adopted next month.
Under the latest proposal, venues with large indoor crowds would not be forced to adopt vaccine passports but would be offered incentives to adopt them instead.
This could include being able to stay open at full capacity, rather than only being allowed to conduct table service and have no punters at bars, if there is another Covid wave.
One adviser to a Cabinet minister said the idea was being discussed, saying that there was now momentum inside the Government behind some form of Covid certification this autumn.
A similar proposal had been considered by a review led by Michael Gove into Covid certification earlier in the year but was dropped as daily cases fell during the spring. …
But Mark Harper, who leads the Covid Recovery Group of lockdown-sceptic Tory MPs, criticised the Government for considering any form of vaccine passport in a domestic setting.
Mr Harper said: “Given our very high uptake of vaccination, especially among the groups vulnerable to Covid, what problem are these disproportionate ideas trying to solve?
“I’m surprised the Government is even suggesting it – it’s almost like they don’t believe that our vaccines work. Just the suggestion will damage business confidence.
“The case for vaccine passports is not backed up by evidence from the Government’s own events research programme. Ministers would be wise to drop these threats now and focus on continuing to encourage vaccination through positive public health messages.”

How are the peaceful protests going? I thought they were the answer to all this? I see a lot about protests in France, but no-one really knows how that’s going as there is censorship from the media, and (possible) exaggeration of the numbers from those who are in support of the protests. I don’t think the protests will succeed when the likes of David Icke, no disrespect to the man, are leading the way. It dilutes the impact and the shark-infested waters of mainstream media will have a feeding frenzy ridiculing us and calling us antivaxxers and conspiracy theorists, and – ironically – a danger to the society we are trying to preserve. It needs more high profile figures – dare I say it – prominent figures in politics, media, and science etc.

More psych ops. Everyone is perfectly entitled to self exempt from the covid pass under 2010 discrimination legislation. The government know vaccine passports in domestic settings wouldn’t get through the courts even if they managed to bully them through Parliament. Hold fast against the bullying.
Self-exempt? I doubt it. I intend to resist getting one unless life becomes intolerable without it (I can do without most things but a requirement for shops and public transport would be awkward to say the least) and if I did try to self-exempt my reason would be “I object on principle”. I would be laughed out of court.

Read the published legal opinions, the nhsx doc and think about why the UK was the only country that had mask self-exemptions as well, before you post such baseless stuff.
I wasn’t aware there had been any actual court cases to test the law. I very much doubt that the intention of the self-exemption clauses in the mask SI was to allow sceptics to refuse to wear one on principle. I would expect the same applies to the covid pass.

Actually, you can self-exempt, in the same way you can exempt yourself with masks, if you feel you are unable to give your full “informed consent”, which does stand in court.
Is there established precedent for this? Seems quite early for it given that the passes have only just been brought it.

I think the issue of mandating things for a worker with a contract is different to nightclub admission.
Regarding self-exemption, I am still sceptical that you could insist on it and get away with it, though in practice as with masks you probably could. But if the police were called and it went to court, I struggle to see any court supporting my position. I think there’s a difference between saying you don’t want the vaxx, which is your right, and saying you want to be let into a nightclub without the same rules applying to you as everyone else.
I hope you are right, but even if you are I see it as scant consolation and it wouldn’t overly make me want to go anywhere that required a pass, along with all the others who’d shown a pass to get in. I’ll not be happy until it is all exposed as a lie, so I suppose I will never be happy.
I don’t know if any precedent has been set already. As I don’t intend to go to many places anyway that would require vax papers (and neither do I want to these days) I’ll just be using it when I have to, to get food or access essential services, if, God forbid, it comes to that! We have to use anything and everything to our advantage, to navigate our way through this.

A different testing requirement for an unvaccinated than for a vaccinated is discriminatory and should therefore not be permitted at all in the UK.
Any invasive test is an assault on ones bodily autonomy and as such, the self exemption on medical/consent grounds should be as applicable to it as it is for masks and, likely soon, vaxx passports, vaxx mandates and vaccination itself.
