New York Times Article Calls for Universal Masking in Schools, but It Doesn’t Stack Up

by Noah Carl
16 August 2021 8:34 AM

The authors of a recent New York Times op-ed describe universal masking as “one of the effective and efficient strategies for preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission in schools”. And given the putative evidence supporting this measure, they ask rhetorically, “Why not require universal masking?”

The authors – a paediatrician and an epidemiologist – cite evidence from a recent study carried out in North Carolina. They collected data on COVID-19 infections among 864,515 students in the state’s school system from March 1st through June 25th, 2021. During this period, there was a mask mandate in place for all K-12 schools.

In total, 6,484 primary infections were recorded, and only 308 secondary infections. (Secondary infections refer to those among the contacts of students who were initially identified as infected.) “We believe this low rate of transmission occurred,” the authors write, because of universal masking.

By contrast, they note that “one school in Israel without a mask mandate… reported an outbreak of COVID-19 involving 153 students”. And “outbreaks at youth camps in Texas, Illinois and Florida show how quickly COVID-19 can spread among adolescents… who are largely unmasked”.

However, there are a number of problems with this argument. As you may have already noticed, there was no control group. The authors observed a low secondary attack rate, and then attributed this to the state’s mask mandate.

Yet infections were falling over the relevant time period in North Carolina as a whole. Only 390 cases were recorded on June 25th, compared to over 2,000 on March 2nd. And several previous studies have found “much lower” secondary attack rates among children, so it may not be that surprising the authors observed a low value.

As David Zweig notes, schools in some parts of Europe and the U.S. did not have mask mandates, and there were no corresponding explosions of cases. What’s more, the Israeli study isn’t as clear-cut as the authors suggest. All schools in the country were exempt from masks for three days, so a single outbreak isn’t strong evidence for mask efficacy.

But put all that to one side. Suppose the authors are correct that universal masking reduces transmission in schools. Is it therefore worth doing? I would argue no.

First, there are tangible costs to mask-wearing. They’re uncomfortable. They get dirty. And they don’t allow you to see other people’s faces, which hampers learning (particularly for the youngest children) as well as social interaction more generally.

Second, it’s not even clear that we want to prevent children from becoming infected. For starters, they face an extremely low risk of death from COVID-19. According to a recent English study, the survival rate for under-18s is 99.995%. And if COVID-19 becomes endemic, which seems very likely, they’ll have to get it at some point. So why not now?

In fact, we might want to encourage children to become infected, the better to build up population immunity and protect the most vulnerable. (I’m of course exempting children who have a serious underlying health condition.)

Vaccination is another option, but I believe we should focus vaccines on those who actually need them, such as elderly people in other countries. And in any case, many people don’t want their children to be vaccinated.

The authors of the New York Times piece make two claims: universal masking cuts transmission in schools; and therefore we should require it. I’m sceptical of the first claim, but even if it’s true, the second doesn’t follow. Wearing masks is costly, and it’s not even clear we want to prevent infections among healthy children.

Kids have already paid a heavy price during the pandemic, thanks to months of ill-advised school closures. Rather than forcing them to wear masks, which could further diminish their learning, we should end the mandates and let them get back to normal.

Stop Press: For a rigorous and comprehensive review of the evidence on mask efficacy, see this piece in City Journal by Jeffrey H. Anderson, a former Director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Mr. Young has to tread a fine line when posting pieces ATL in the MSM. The fact that he created DS with a comments section that’s unmoderated speaks volumes to me. Amen to that.

If he were to go all in with truth-bombs about this rolling technofacist agenda his MSM profile would be cancelled, blocked… extinguished.

I’m certain his strategy is to hint at what the darker realities of this current dominant vaccines and boosters are best phase is, that and the green passes are for the safety of the greater masses BS spiel.

Both being lies in fact, with the science to prove it.

This sites readership and hits continually climbs, that’s for a positive reason, and I suspect the insightful comments section has lots to do with it. [collective hugs all round]

I personally am very grateful for what Toby has achieved for us so far…that and as an alternative voice medium DS has been allowed to continue.

The road ahead is exceedingly difficult, be thankful for any vehicle where the light of truth still shines bright along the way.

Yeah, the ending with the ‘politicians fallacy’ ruined the article. I know Toby wants to retain ‘credibility’. However you have to speak the truth. The ignorant have their excuses, Toby doesn’t. Providing cover with the ‘cock-up’ theory can only embolden the puppet masters and the puppets alike. Though, perhaps Toby wants to stay out of jail!

Its started in the Northern Territories, Australia. The Army is transporting ‘positive cases and contacts’ to Camps.
Its OK though, because its ‘only’ Abos.
This is EXACTLY how it started in the 1930s. The most vulnerable of society were used as example, then it grew to anyone that disputed the rulers.
Clive James was right, Australia is a nation of prison guards, not convicts.

Can you post a link please to news about the arrest and transportation in Australia of aboriginal people labelled as “positive cases and contacts”.

It’s increasingly seeming that what we need – and what we may get if we act fast and we spread information about the anger that is growing in several countries – is an international general strike.

*That* is the only benefit claimed for these “vaccines”. Since they emerged we have been told repeatedly that they neither provide immunity from infection, nor prevent transmission (all of which I believe).
Their only benefit, apparently, is that they reduce the severity of symptoms (I have seen no evidence to doubt (or believe) this).
So, apart from self-preservation (which doesn’t bother me; quite frankly sometimes I’ve lost the will to live), the only benefit to anyone is that I might not use NHS resources someone else might need.
Therefore, it seems to me, the vaccines should be reserved for the extremely vulnerable, or as a proxy, the old. Am I wrong?
Let’s see how that goes. After all, we’re assured the risks are negligible, and disinformation. No one will be killed, and even if they are, well, they’re old bastards, so it doesn’t matter.

As one of the unvaccinated, I’m 100% protected from immediate adverse reactions, I’m 100% protected from any long term effects and I’m at least 99.8% protected from death due to covid. I’ll run with those odds.

It’s hard to fudge or explain away in peer review. A standard test used day in day out to monitor susceptibility has seen a massive increase directly in relation to the administration of the vaccine.

It lends weight to its clarity that in such a climate it still got published

The idea, or myth, is that the ‘vaccines’ provide some amount/percentage of protection – that it is less easily to catch the virus, less easy to spread it, and less easy to die if you get it.
Some people will claim there have been studies to prove this, but they can never find the paperwork, can they?

There will be blood on the streets.

The powers that be have war gamed all this – no doubt computer modelled. (Maybe by a Mr. Ferguson – never underestimate the incompetence of those in charge).

I wonder if they worry, just a tiny bit, that it won’t work out as planned. If I were them, I’d be a little bit afraid.

They may end up hanging off lamp posts – and we are going to need a lot of them.

Hi there 77th.

I completely agree they have war-gamed all this. However, like you I am wondering about potential cracks in their plans.

Have the ‘vaccines’ not turned out as planned? Is the resistance higher than imagined? You do have to wonder.

The hard nut to crack was always going to be the U.S. And the non-compliance and legal challenges there is very noticeable.

And if things are going wrong, what’s their exit strategy? You see for me, once they rolled out the ‘vaccines’, it became an all or nothing game. And if that is the case, you could well see many ‘storming of the bastille’s’.

Should I be dusting off my pitchfork yet? 😉

Nuclear and global war has never been more likely than it is right now in my opinion.

IN fact, a civil war in America – most states divorcing themselves from D.C. – might be the only thing that prevents this outcome.

That is, fight a little war to prevent THE big war.

But I don’t know that a war is guaranteed or inevitable if large number of states seceded. Didn’t many states/countries secede from the USSR without any wars?

The trouble with this article is that it doesn’t account for the vaccines’ effect on the jabbed, which includes obedient members of the security forces. When a msm organ like the Daily Wail can talk of failure of the immune system (rather than failure of the vaccines/boosters) then maybe it’s time to sit up and take note. There are multiple liens of evidence to suggest this is happening, and that leaves aside the effects of the jab on the vascular system.

Will there be enough prison spaces for the unjabbed, and will the agents of the state be healthy enough to use force against the unvaccinated?

The NHS in the UK is collapsing – it’s taken only two years for the politicians of the UK to flatten the system. the situation is no better in the EU27 or in Israel. I fear – or rather the jabbed should fear – that we are rapidly moving towards the endgame in this culling operation.

I’m sorry but that’s horseshit and it’s easy to see why: The basic claim is that vaccination changed COVID from a serious disease for the old and frail to one predominantly affecting healthy, relatively younger people. It’s not only that we had this particular piece of BS in ad nauseam repetition at evey turn of COVID since March 2020, it’s also not possible right now: This would also have happened before COVID vaccines were available and then, the known death profile (roughly in line with naturally occuring deaths) of the disease had been different.

Apart from that, someone who works as consultant for the NHS who makes a statement to the effect of I’m getting seriously pissed off with the sick people I’m getting paid to treat! urgently needs to be kicked out of his or her position to avoid the next bunch of sensational headlines of health workers killing patients because they were disgusted by them. Wouldn’t be the first time.

No we would not. It would be beyond unprofessional (not to mention biting the hand that feeds them….without sick and injured people, we would have no need for hospital consultants). They are NOT paid to judge!

By the government double speak, this is probably correct. Only two jabs without a booster and you are unvaccinated. Not to mention within X amount of days of being jabbed, you are still unvaccinated.

The evidence suggests they are less likely to become severely ill or die for the disease, but even those benefits wear off over time, which is why the Government is urging people to get the booster.

that much , at least , is quite true.

If vaccinated people can transmit the virus, what is the point of banning the unvaccinated from bars, restaurants and other public places?

In Germany and e.g. Wales, this is a case of pour encourager les autres, or um die andere ermutigen, for better or worse that is the object.

The reason I have chosen to not get my booster is precisely because it’s likely the vaccines are causing reduced immune responses. When you add to that the limited duration of the vaccines, the use of vaccines for any but the most at risk has become not just a weird religious view but dangerous. Focusing on successful treatments is what is needed. And then a reminder that age-adjusted mortality is essentially normative in history. We don’t want anyone to die, but sadly, death will find us all.

Well let’s get rid of those making these Covid rules. That, to me, would stop all this in an instant.
Fact is, if the rules stay, it’s 10 days quarantine for any ‘unvaccinated’ person arriving to the UK. I have heard no tales of people who have broken this quarantine, but I have read tales where Mitie marshalls do come round to see if you’re where you’re supposed to be.

I can assure you, plenty of surveys have shown a majority don’t keep the quarantine. My lived experience would show this to be true.

Though I think a lot of people like the excuse to “W”FH for a bit.

Whoever it was some one phoned me when I arrived in the Uk where I was supposed to self isolate. Changed my sim card and nothing after that.

Needless to say I didn’t ‘self-isolate’ and that was June of this year.

That’s OK. I think there will be enough booster refusers + everything refusers to outnumber the Mitie numpties on minimum wage. What do they do when you don’t open the door? shamble off again. If anyone asks, you just say you were indisposed and unable to come to the door.

This so-called bloody illness is no worse than seasonal ‘flu and we here should always bear that in mind.

Have we ever mounted a propoganda campaign of such nastiness ever before?

So, we must always remember that what us taking place has bugger all to do with public health.

Governments worldwide are waging war on their populations and for two aims:

Depopulation and enslavement of those remaining. I don’t believe any of us can imagine the depths of depravity the Carney’s, Fauci’s, Sorros, Gates’, Johnson, Andrews, Schwab and all the others will plumb to attain their evil and macabre ends.

We are in a fight to the death.

I think it’s more likely that European leaders will end up being imprisoned by the families of those lost to vaccine injuries when the truth comes out. And that’s if the European leaders are lucky.

”You might as well ban people with ginger hair for all the good it will do.” steady on, do not give them any more ideas, it is bad enough as it is!
This is now like a huge ponzi scheme; as the adverse reactions and the evidence of ineffectiveness pile up, they up the ante more and more. Eventually they will either get away with the biggest, most evil and malevolent scam of all time or the whole house of cards will come crashing down. I would like to think the latter option will come true but I would have to say that at the moment I am not optimistic on that one.

“Winter Covid crisis” Lol. There was never a covid crisis. The only crisis related to covid was caused by evil governments and their lackeys and hangers-on.

“The Religious Faith of European leaders in Vaccines” Oh for goodness’ sake give it a rest. They don’t give a toss about covid or the vaccines.

I see no signs whatsoever of any kind of crisis – covid or otherwise. I see a lot of people trying to get on with their normal lives – no one is dropping dead in the streets – but for some obscure reason the health minister wants everyone, jabbed and unjabbed alike it seem now. to be locked up in their own homes.

There are so many of us that they haven’t got space in the prisons – they will have to put us in camps run by the army. And they’ll have to put tanks on the streets to cover their goons when they’re out searching house to house looking for us.

An Austrian nurse friend reports that the authorities in Austria are threatening to fine people about 1500 euros for not taking the “booster”, to fine them up to 3600 euros for refusal to vaccinate, and to jail them if they repeatedly refuse vaccination “requests”. She is optimistic. She writes that if the government stays on this path “they will just make both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated angry” and “if things continue like this there will be a general strike” and, if it comes to it, a war.

It was invigorating and a pleasure to read her message.

Huge respect to all Austrian people who are resisting fascism in Hitler’s birth country. WE LOVE YOU!

Can someone here read German? If so, please look at this site. I’m told it’s somewhere that lets people in several countries register for a clinical study that “allows” you “medically” to avoid vaccination – and it’s free and you can withdraw from it at any time. (If this is a scam, don’t blame me. That’s what I’m trying to find out.) The countries don’t appear to include Britain at this time, but they include Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

This looks genuine to me (I’m German). But it’s just about an observational study about the general life and wellbeing of people who chose to remain unvaccinated (as far as I can tell by a quick look). There’s a so-called Eingetragener Verein (registered, private society/ club) behind this and the bylaws state they plan to operate world wide.

I think this falls some way short of an officially-approved exemption of the kind that would be accepted as a substitute for a vaxxpass, for example.
That said, it’s always worth asking anyone who is keen on the jabs, and who is aware that they are still in trial until 2023, how big the control group is, how it’s being managed etc. One of the oddities about these drugs is that, whereas most clinical trials in Stage 3 involve close personal contact, follow-up and monitoring with trial subjects, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of that going on right now…
The NHS website says that any treatment in Stage 3 trials is “compared against an existing treatment or a placebo to see if it’s better in practice and if it has important side effects”.
Is anyone here aware of the drug companies collating this data other than through their customer’s (i.e. the government’s) own statistical reports?
Does anyone know what the existing treatment or placebo is that is being used as a comparator?

“(T)he evidence suggests (the vaccinated) are less likely to become severely ill or die for the disease”

I disagree with that statement. But how does that alleged benefit of vaccination compare with the benefit of a vegetarian diet, for example? (Many other behaviours that are good for the immune system could be mentioned too.) According to this study published in the BMJ, vegetarians and pescetarians “had 73% (…) and 59% (…) lower odds of moderate-to-severe COVID-19 severity, respectively, compared with participants who did not follow these diets.”

Strangely that study has never been mentioned from behind a lectern in Number 10 or on the front page of the Heil.

Extract from a letter sent to the NZ Medical Council from a retired Doctor in Tauranga.

“… the still birth rate has rocketed. Usually there are 114 still births per year for the entire country but in just two weeks Hastings alone had 9 still births in vaccinated mothers who were following your advice to get the vaccine. You are responsible for the death of those babies. You have blood on your hands. I suppose you are also in denial regarding the deaths of teenagers.

We have 2 siblings dead after the vaxathon in Christchurch – a girl aged 15 and a boy aged 17. Plus a 17 year old boy in Northland and a 13 year old in the South Island – both dead the day after their vaccination -and a 14 year old boy in South Auckland who died 2 hours after his vaccination. Also the 17 year old girl whose death should have stopped the roll out but was instead blamed, prior to any autopsy report, on the pill – which she had been prescribed some time prior so therefore the GP would have checked for clotting risk factors at that point in time.

I know a lot more about this case then you do as I know close family friends. I am also aware that the government has asked families involved with severe adverse reactions and deaths to sign waivers that come with financial settlements. This blatant attempt to further cover up vaccine failures is abhorrent, as is the gagging of the media at the cost of millions of dollars of tax payer money.

Why don’t you speak up against this propaganda ? Why do you sit quietly and do nothing while the government promotes a drug that should never have passed Medsafe? And to add insult to injury, in promoting the vaccine you have violated the Nuremberg Code in its entirety. You might like to look that up and familiarise yourself with your offences. You are all guilty of crimes against humanity. And if you think I am exaggerating, you are wrong.

I have all of your names and I have forwarded them – except for Dr Goodman, who I know is in her heart a very decent person – along with the names of Dr Bryan Betty and Dr Samantha Murton and the NZ board of the RANZCOG, to Dr Reiner Fuelmich. Dr Fuelmich is an international trial lawyer who has successfully sued large fraudulent corporations eg Volkswagen and Deutsche Bank. His worldwide network of lawyers has listened to over a hundred experts from every field of science and medicine relating to the current PCR / Covid fraud. In due course he intends to put a Nuremberg 2 trial through the International Criminal Court.

Finally, I do not wish to be associated with a scientifically ignorant organisation that has lost its ability to practice evidence based medicine, has banned open debate, censors its doctors, allows politicians to decide how best to treat patients, has abandoned the principal of informed consent and, worst of all, has broken its promise to first do no harm. I hold you in the utmost contempt as do many New Zealanders. I shall see you on the other side of history. My conscience will be clear but may God have mercy on you”.

Peter McCullough on Telegram:
Pushback Against Unnecessary, Ill-Advised, and Unlawful Mandates of Investigational Vaccines
Since the wave of public and private entity COVID-19 vaccine mandates this summer, there has been progressively stiffer resistance from a public that knows the mandates are unethical, immoral, and from a civil perspective—illegal. Because none of the COVID-19 vaccines (Pfizer, Moderna, JNJ) are FDA approved or commercially sold by vaccine manufacturers to the public, Americans know the consent forms indicate vaccination can only be voluntary and that the vaccine products do not have proven safety or efficacy.
Thus, the consent forms by themselves are a clear indicator that no entity can “mandate” participation in a clinical investigation or research. Rates of COVID-19 vaccination plummeted in April of 2021 when word got out that Americans were dying and becoming injured after the injection in large numbers. Analyses from Rose and McLachlan using the CDC VAERS system indicated that 50% of the deaths occurred within 48 hours, 80% within a week, and 86% of the time, there was no other explanation other than the vaccine must have triggered the death.
From that point forward, there was a series of perverted efforts to seduce vaccination, including free donuts, beer, million-dollar raffles, college scholarships, and most recently, a free fling in a European brothel. But sadly, for the purveyors of vaccines, reasonable people felt no tasty donut or even a quickie was worth their life at the end of a needle loaded with mRNA or adenoviral DNA coding for the Wuhan Spike protein.
The vaccine stakeholders became impatient over the summer as vaccine hesitancy appropriately grew with reports of vaccine failures in large numbers of patients resulting in hospitalization and death and clear signals that the vaccines lost their protection after a short six months. The result of these events was vaccine mandates.
Students bore the brunt of the first wave of mandates after a few semesters of online classes; students were ready to return to campus but not at the risk of organ system injury or worse after unnecessary COVID-19 vaccination. There was pushback and even embarrassing outbreaks of COVID-19 among vaccinated students at Duke University that reminded the public again that the vaccines don’t work well enough to mandate.
But the continued coercion picked up steam with employment. At first, they came from private companies such as health systems which had profited richly from COVID-19 hospitalizations over 2020 and 2021. There were no major US hospital outbreaks of COVID-19 due to good airflow standards and the use of reasonable contagion control methods. Yet, health systems proudly announced COVID-19 vaccine mandates and had no concerns about firing the same workers who risked their lives as frontline workers caring for patients with COVID-19, many of whom who could not benefit from a vaccine since they were naturally immune after COVID-19 recovery.
Finally, with President Biden, OSHA, an entire wave of mandates came together that indeed pleased the vaccine stakeholders thirsting to achieve their lofty goal of “a needle in every arm” no matter how unwanted, unsafe, or ineffective the vaccines had become. The COVID-19 public vaccine program had become the epitome of forcing a failure on failure to its complete end on a public who had no desire to have repeated injections that were clearly not up to acceptable standards. Thus court filings, appeals, overturns, more filings have challenged a legal system that has become vaccine-corrupt under its own pressures to become vaccinated. With the suspension of jury trials, a hearing before a group of peers is no longer part of our legal process, and as a result, “fairness” has been lost.
On this week’s Report, we will update the status of vaccine mandates and hear from pediatrician Steve Kebe, MD, who weighs in on COVID-19 in children and the dangers of ill-advised vaccination of this group, which is now largely immune, not proven to be any public health threat, and in whom the risks far outweigh the benefits of participating in vaccine research.

It’s worse. Data is starting to emerge that excess mortality is on the rise in the vaccinated under 60’s.
If that is correct it means that overall the vaccine is killing some people that would’ve survived COVID. As for jabbing healthy children who are at zero risk from COVID, I can find no other words than evil on a par with Josef Mengele.

Europe is not one country. News from today The Basque High Court does not authorize nightlife venues and restaurants to allow for customers to show proof of vaccination. ie No passports to be used. The court said that this measure would limit fundamental rights of the segment of the population that is most immunized, since 90% of those over 12 years of age have been vaccinated in Spain. The Basque Government has confirmed that it will no longer use passports. Some other regions do use the passport in various way

Plus, all of us who make comments in the Comments Section get to reach a lot of people. So all of the links we have provided reach more people than they would have otherwise.

On the other is (with all its imperfections) the democratic heritage.

If you have a negative lateral flow test the chance that you are infectious is close to zero. Vaccination status does not determine whether you have the virus, transmissible or otherwise, so is irrelevant. I see much sense in having a lateral flow test passport, which you have if you enter your test result on the NHS app. Of course people will cheat whatever you try and make them do.

O.K. – I’ll just note it so you won’t be asked again. It’s a matter of personal choice”

It is of greater concern that scientists are remaining silent. Niemöller warned of the price of silence :and how terrifying that at the anniversary of Kristallnacht in 1938 which saw a subset of the population blamed for the ills of society in that same part of the world (Austria/Germany) history is repeating itself with the vilification of the unvaccinated. If you have had Covid19: what kind of scientific nonsense leads scientists to demand that person has an mRNA vaccine? How many doses 1,2,3 or more? Of course it is stupid to demand vaccination in this group.
It is the silence of the science to argue against political rhetoric of masks, lockdowns and universal vaccination without antibody testing, which is of greater concern.
Perhaps at Christmas we should await the arrival of 3 Wise men but there is no sign of them yet?

Currently, according to the Government, the vast majority of people being admitted to hospital with/of Covid, and dying of said Covid……..are over 65. Within that cohort it’s worse in the over 75s, and within that cohort it’s worse in the over 85s. I suspect the vast majority of these have been vaccinated.
So is the vaccine effective at all, I can’t say for sure but it’s not saving the very people who it should is it?
Under the age of 65 you have a very, very, small chance of being very Ill or dying from Covid, obviously the odds get better the younger you are, so vaccine efficacy is a bit irrelevant in this age group surely, and just muddies the water in relation to the ones who are at high risk and who still seem to be dying vax or no vax.

The Bolshevik war against the ‘unvaccinated’ is becoming more sinister by the day, yet most people don’t care as it doesn’t affect them. The media propaganda outlets ramp the hatred up yet no one calls it out, including this site.

Not quite sure why the jabbed are so smug, once they have finished us off, they will find the next group to turn on. The ram raiding of a Christmas parade (for racial reasons) completely ignored by the MSM, shows what group the media will turn on next – and good riddance to them because they have turned on us.
