This is the 26th of the round-ups of Covid vaccine safety reports and news compiled by a group of medical doctors who are monitoring developments but prefer to remain anonymous in the current climate (find the 25th one here). By no means is this part of an effort to generate alarm about the vaccines or dissuade anyone from getting inoculated. It should be read in conjunction with the Daily Sceptic‘s other posts on vaccines, which include both encouraging and not so encouraging developments. At the Daily Sceptic we report all the news about the vaccines whether positive or negative and give no one advice about whether they should or should not take them. Unlike with lockdowns, we are neither pro-vaccine nor anti-vaccine; we see our job as reporting the facts, not advocating for or against a particular policy. The vaccine technology is novel and the vaccines have not yet fully completed their trials, which is why they’re in use under temporary and not full market authorisation. This was done on account of the emergency situation and the trial data was largely encouraging on both efficacy and safety. For a summary of that data, see this preamble to the Government’s page on the Yellow Card reporting system. (Dr. Tess Lawrie in June wrote an open letter to Dr. June Raine, head of the MHRA, arguing that: “The MHRA now has more than enough evidence on the Yellow Card system to declare the COVID-19 vaccines unsafe for use in humans,” a claim that has been ‘fact checked’ here.) Boris Johnson said in October that being double vaccinated “doesn’t protect you against catching the disease, and it doesn’t protect you against passing it on”. We publish information and opinion to inform public debate and help readers reach their own conclusions about what is best for them, based on the available data.
- A plan to expand Covid vaccinations to all children aged 5-11 in England is delayed amid an impasse between the Government and its vaccinations advisory committee (JCVI), though the announcement has been made in Wales and Scotland.
- The Children’s Covid Vaccine Advisory Group (CCVAG) has written to the JCVI and the U.K.’s Chief Medical Officers to request an urgent meeting and an immediate pause to the rollout of Covid vaccines to children, pending the results of a public inquiry.
- New case reports of adverse events following Covid vaccination:
- A study has shown the risk of myocarditis from the vaccine is greater than from Covid for males under the age of 40.
- Official data from Public Health Scotland show the vaccinated population have accounted for four in every five COVID-19 cases, hospitalisations and deaths over the past two months.
- A new study has shown that antibodies in unjabbed Covid survivors are ‘stronger’ over time than in people who’ve had two shots but no infection.
- CDC data shows nearly 35,000 Covid vaccine injuries have been reported among 5-17 year olds.
- Leaked U.S. Department of Defence data shows link between disease and COVID-19 vaccination amongst military personnel – the data have been discussed widely, including at the U.S. Senate, by Dr Ryan Cole, attorney Tom Renz and Senator Johnson.
- Passive surveillance reporting in the U.S. shows the risk of myocarditis after receiving mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines was increased across multiple age and sex strata and was highest after the second vaccination dose in adolescent males and young men.
- Confidential Pfizer trial report obtained by Strong and Free Canada shows the death of more than 1,000 trial participants in the first three months – a 3% death rate among resolved adverse events.
- A hospital in Israel has reported that 80% of serious Covid cases are amongst the fully vaccinated.
- Data from Rambam hospital in Haifa, Israel reveal a stillbirth, miscarriage and abortion rate 8% among women who were vaccinated with at least one dose of Covid vaccine compared with 6% among women who never received it.
- A new study in Israel shows 133 times risk of myocarditis after Covid vaccination (comparisons with myocarditis rates following infection are irrelevant as vaccination does not prevent infection).
- There is evidence of natural immunity in unvaccinated healthy U.S. adults up to 20 months after confirmed COVID-19 infection.
- Ex-footballer Matt Le Tissier talks about the recent increase in football player deaths.
- VAERS – the American version of the Yellow Card reporting system – as of February 4th reports a total of 1,103,893 reports of adverse events following Covid vaccines, including 23,615 deaths and 188,135 serious injuries.
- DAEN Australia – the equivalent of the Yellow Card reporting system – has logged (up to February 1st) 107,543 reports of adverse events, including 758 deaths.
- Children (Under 18) Adverse Events UK – up to February 2nd, the MHRA reports a total of 3,252 adverse event reports, comprising 2,962 Pfizer, 254 AstraZeneca, 18 Moderna and 18 unspecified from 3,114,400 children vaccinated. This includes 59 reported cases with Pfizer and one with Moderna of myocarditis/pericarditis, suggesting a current risk of 13 cases per million first doses and 12 per million second doses for this age group.
- Booster Doses – 44,763 adverse events have been reported across all vaccines up to February 2nd from 37,419,104 people vaccinated, suggesting a reporting rate of one adverse event per 836 doses.
Summary of Adverse Events in the U.K.
According to an updated report published on February 3rd, the MHRA Yellow Card reporting system has recorded a total of 1,453,605 events based on 443,799 reports. The total number of fatalities reported is 2,010.
- Pfizer (25.8 million first doses, 22.9 million second doses, 28.7 million third doses) now has one Yellow Card in 158 people vaccinated. Deaths: 1 in 36,467 people vaccinated (717).
- AstraZeneca (24.9 million first doses, 24.2 million second doses, 53,000 third doses) has one Yellow Card in 102 people vaccinated. Deaths: 1 in 20,750 people vaccinated (1,218).
- Moderna (1.6 million first doses, 1.4 million second doses, 8.7 million third doses) has one Yellow Card in 45 people vaccinated. Deaths: 1 in 48,485 people vaccinated (37).
Overall, one in every 119 people vaccinated (0.84%) have experienced a Yellow Card adverse event. The MHRA has previously estimated that the Yellow Card reporting rate may be approximately 10% of actual figures. Note that sometimes in Yellow Card reporting, the numbers of adverse events (including fatalities) will be lower than the previous week. The Yellow Card system is a passive reporting system, so in theory this should not happen as all reports should be cumulative. However, the MHRA say they analyse the data prior to publication, with deaths and pregnancy conditions being notably investigated. They do not state criteria by which reports would be removed and to date have not clarified why this data varies. It is therefore unclear how many reported adverse events have been removed from the reports since reporting began in February 2021.
