A friend recently told me a story that made me think rather differently about integration. It is not about a deprived inner city neighbourhood, a religious enclave or people who arrived in Britain unable to speak English. What makes it interesting is precisely the opposite.
My friend lives in a leafy, prosperous suburb on the northern edge of North London, next to Hertfordshire. And I really do mean leafy North London here, not Islington, which the press insists on calling North London. This is the other North London, large houses, good schools, expensive cars, gardens, golf clubs and the sort of place people move to when they have done reasonably well for themselves.
About 13 years ago a Nigerian family moved into the adjoining half of his semi detached house. On paper, you could hardly imagine a better example of successful integration. The wife was a deputy head teacher at a posh girls school in North London. The family was prosperous, educated and professional. Their children were roughly the same age as my friend’s and, when they arrived, my friend and his partner went round with a bottle of wine to welcome them.
Nobody needed English lessons. Nobody was socially excluded. Nobody was demanding Sharia law. These were two prosperous professional families living in an affluent English suburb. Surely, if integration happens naturally anywhere, it happens here.
Except it didn’t.
It began with noise. There was piano practice approaching midnight, loud conversations and singing after 1am and, at the other end of the night, enthusiastic prayer sessions beginning at around six in the morning. Cries of “Help me, Jesus!” would come through the wall at a volume which, as my friend puts it, ought to have removed the need for divine omniscience. Jesus could presumably hear perfectly well from wherever he happened to be.
At first my friend shrugged it off. Nobody wants to become Victor Meldrew because the neighbours occasionally make some noise. But it wasn’t occasional, and what bothered him was the apparent lack of concern that another family was trying to sleep a few feet away.
Then came the shower pump from hell. The previous neighbours converted their loft and installed a pump which, according to my friend, sounded like a jet engine starting above his bedroom. It operated at all sorts of hours. He resorted to earplugs and, in one of those consequences nobody could invent, developed an ear infection so severe that he spent around 10 days in a German hospital over Christmas and New Year.
Attempts to resolve the problem amicably went nowhere. My friend says the attitude he encountered amounted to, ‘This is my house and I can do whatever I like in it.’ His own view was simpler. Of course your house is yours, but if you share a wall with another family, you don’t play the piano at midnight or make a racket at six in the morning. You shouldn’t need legislation to tell you that.
Eventually he and his partner raised the problem more forcefully. Instead of a sensible discussion, he says he was effectively branded a Nazi and told by his neighbour that he was “everything she had been warned about” before moving to Hertfordshire.
He was baffled. He had never regarded the dispute as racial.
Eventually the council became involved. My friend had to keep a noise diary, officials supplied recording equipment and there were visits and letters. Public employees were now spending their time mediating something that should have been settled by two families talking to each other.
My friend was still trying to avoid an official battle. On the eve of the council sending a formal letter to the neighbours, he wrote to them again. His opening line was: “I’d still really like to be friends.”
The following day, while the two families’ cars were passing each other slowly, the husband allegedly spat through the driver’s window into my friend’s partner’s face, in front of his own children. The police were called. When they eventually spoke to him (two days later), the husband had apparently explained that he had sneezed.
My friend assures me that it was the most remarkably well aimed sneeze in Hertfordshire.
After the police visit, he says he heard the wife loudly declaring through the wall: “It’s always the same, white people are always trying to keep us down!”
Reverse the races in that sentence and nobody would have difficulty recognising it as prejudice. Nor should they. Prejudice does not cease to be prejudice because of the identity of the person expressing it.
Things deteriorated further. There were more arguments and more noise. At one point the neighbours apparently cut a tree in my friend’s front garden without permission. When he objected, the confrontation escalated until the police were called again after the husband allegedly threatened him while holding garden shears.
When my friend first told me that part, I laughed because I assumed he had embellished the story.
He hadn’t.
Now, the obvious response is that these were simply unpleasant neighbours. Britain has always produced plenty of those. One Nigerian family cannot tell us how Nigerian families behave, any more than one obnoxious English family in Benidorm tells us everything about British culture.
But I don’t think that entirely disposes of the cultural question.
What makes the story interesting is how thoroughly integrated this family appeared to be. The wife was a senior teacher at a prestigious North London school. The family was prosperous, spoke English, had children in the education system and had lived in Britain for years. On every conventional measure of integration, you would put a large tick beside their name.
Yet after more than a decade living beside them, my friend felt there remained a substantial gulf between the two households over some very basic things: how much noise it is acceptable to make, how much you modify your behaviour for a neighbour, how you deal with criticism and whether a disagreement between people of different ethnicities immediately becomes an argument about race.
That is the interesting bit, because integration is normally discussed through dramatic examples such as segregated communities, religious extremism, grooming gangs, honour violence or riots. Those are serious issues, but they make it easy to imagine that integration is a problem confined to somebody else’s neighbourhood.
My friend’s experience suggests it can fail somewhere much less obvious. It can fail among educated people, prosperous people and professional people living in expensive streets where everybody appears completely integrated.
Of course none of this proves that his neighbours behaved as they did because they were Nigerian. Perhaps they would have behaved identically had they been born in Watford. Britain produces more than enough inconsiderate idiots of its own.
But it would be equally strange to pretend that upbringing and culture have no influence on how people behave. We happily celebrate cultural differences when they involve food, music, festivals and clothing, then become terribly uncomfortable when somebody suggests culture might also influence attitudes towards noise, confrontation, authority or neighbours.
Culture apparently exists only when it is enriching. That cannot possibly be true.
Integration therefore has to mean something more than speaking English, getting a good job and buying an expensive house. At some level it means adapting to the ordinary expectations of the society in which you live, including the small courtesies that stop people from driving each other mad.
My friend’s story also came with a cost. Council officers visited, recording equipment was installed, letters were written and police officers attended allegations of assault and threats. Taxpayer funded institutions spent hours dealing with a dispute between two prosperous families who couldn’t establish a workable relationship across a party wall.
Perhaps the simplest point is that ordinary disagreements also have to remain ordinary disagreements. A white Englishman should be able to tell a Nigerian neighbour that the music is too loud without becoming a racist. A Nigerian neighbour should be able to tell a white Englishman exactly the same thing. Sometimes a complaint about noise really is just a complaint about noise.
My friend describes the whole saga as a First World problem, and perhaps it is. But after more than a decade of lost sleep, council visits, police calls, a hospital stay, accusations of racism, alleged spitting and one particularly memorable encounter involving garden shears, he no longer accepts the comforting assumption that employment, education, money and a nice postcode automatically amount to integration.
Living next door to somebody is not the same thing as integrating with them. And perhaps we should stop pretending that it is.

“One Nigerian family cannot tell us how Nigerian families behave, any more than one obnoxious English family in Benidorm tells us everything about British culture.”
No but living in or extensive visits to the Country in question does. That’s why the multi-culti/diversity mob thinks it’s all about the white folk being nice and welcoming and migrants will just respond and fit in.
Culture migrates. Cultures differ.
In the last 1970s and 1980s I travelled to South Africa about a dozen times on business. The “blacks” there were nothing like “blacks” in the UK and US, indeed there was no stereotypical black – multiple languages and cultures, and prejudice and discrimination between them.
Come on guys, this is not the kind of article and these are not the sort of comments that help anyone’s cause. Our Nigerian neighbours are wonderful and pretty much completely integrated, while there are plenty British-blood neighbours who are as awful as you can imagine. People from every nation are on the good/evil spectrum.
(And that does not conflict with the fact that some world views are incompatable with our Christian-based culture.)
I didn’t think the article was really about good and evil, just about social mores and how different cultures may find it difficult to coexist in complete harmony. Do you really think the author or many people here believe that ALL Nigerians are like this, and NO British people are? I doubt it. I think most of us realise that people vary and that it’s sensible and right to treat people as individuals as far as possible. But that doesn’t mean that at a societal level, if you are talking about large numbers of people from different cultures, you are not going to get variations that could cause problems. Of course the article is anecdotal and as such open to counter-anecdotes. I don’t know if there have been studies on neighbour disputes that analyse if certain races or cultures are more likely to get into arguments. Probably not. If the outcome showed that Nigerians were over-represented, it would probably be blamed on racism. I think you can look at crime statistics, and also the way that people live in the various countries that immigrants here come from, to give you an idea of how things are likely to turn out.… Read more »
The British and more the English have a tradition which involves looking after one’s house which includes the garden in the front and back of the property. Many cultures will look after the inside of the property but not the exterior. If they look after the exterior it is the back not the front garden.
Orwell said the Britishh express their aesthetics through the garden, hence flower shows. Those in agriculture and heavy industry such as mining and ship building were keen gardeners. In poor areas, the front step and pavement were kept immaculate, as was the parlour.
Where one had a neighbour who was very robust from heavy manual labour, played rugby, boxed in his youth or had been in the Armed Forces, they were often superb neighbours and kept the neighbourhood clean and quiet. Anyone who threatened a man with a weapon who had undertaken heavy manual labour, played rugby, boxed when he had served in the Armed Forces, was very foolish. A man who can lift a 112 lb sack onto his shoulder with a single hand ( common 50 years ago ) is not someone one wants to fight. Size counts. Once you have a… Read more »
I am a big fan of the DS but I don’t think this is an article about immigration at all and for once it is poor journalism to present it as such.
Isn’t it an article about the evidently widespread, simplistic, misunderstanding of what integration means and the lack of understanding of what culture actually is?
Ask most people about culture and they’ll talk about recipes, hair-styles, clothes, music. It’s a very superficial assessment which misses the fundamental aspects of what makes a people who they are. And culture migrates.
Culture is much deeper – values, morals, manners (important code for self-discipline), ethics, outlook, laws. Cultures differ, which is why every conflict in history is rooted in cultural differences.
What is it about then?
See also my reply to dangerous granny above.
Living part time in London, I have noticed that our friends from the old Empire and especially the better educated types from West Africa are arrogant and incompetent drivers. They tailgate and blow horns if you fail to move into traffic, cut across lanes and give verbal abuse. They may have obtained their drivers license in their home country.
Alien cultures will always be alien, no matter what amount of tolerance – enforced or otherwise – is advocated. Seamless blending in is a pipe dream and will never happen.
In a primary school, two dinner ladies, really good friends, one white, one Sri Lankan started an argument in the playground.
When they were hauled in by the supervisor to be told that arguing in the playground, in front of the children, was inappropriate behaviour; the Sri Lankan lady pulled the race card! Incredible!
One has to ask, why? What did her ethnicity have to do with anything?
Of course it had nothing to do with it, but the race card is a convenient weapon for those who wish to use it,
I have a Nigerian neighbour too. She has no idea how to behave. She’s also taking the P out of the British taxpayer and has been working our immigration system for years.
I am beyond disgusted.
This kind of neighbour dispute isn’t trivial; it can have a significant effect on your ability to sell your property (and therefore its value) since you have to declare any serious disputes when you try to sell it.
I’m afraid it comes down to probability. I am a native, white British female now in my late 60s. I realise I cannot choose my neighbours and it is best to do your best to get along. I instinctively know that it is likely to be easier if someone similar to me lives next door – not guaranteed, but likely.
I equally know that if a young, black, cannabis-smoking couple moves in, it is less likely. And the same goes for many other “types” now living in the country.
Culture and behavioural standards are inculcated from birth. By the time you are an adult they are deeply embedded …. instinctive. The pro multi-culti Establishment pretends otherwise, but it is wilful denial of reality.
We have unpleasant Scottish-born (like us) neighbours who indulge in low-level seemingly petty behaviours – door slamming, car revving, pacing the common boundary when we’re in the garden, cutting the grass for hours if we have people in the garden, reporting us to the council for non-existant actions etc. They indulge in what is called ‘sleekit’ behaviour. This has been going on for 20 years and is the result of our objecting to plans for an extension. We did all the olive branch stuff but were told to eff off on quite a few occasions. We ignore them as much as possible. Sometimes people are just horrible
Yes, as I said it comes down to probability.
In my last house (leafy Surrey) I had an elderly white man as a neighbour. He was an absolute ar$ehole and made my life hell for 20 years. Sometimes people are just horrible.
100%
Many comparable examples in my own history (as, I like to think, the good guy) and just as many in the history of friends and acquaintances. There is, however, an elephant in the room….
This lesson should be held onto when we think about the British chap who recently demolished his own house after a person of another culture moved in to the semi which was attached to his. He probably had a reason which was reasonable, after a fashion.
The whole phrase multi-culturalism is an oxymoron. By definition you cannot have multiple cultures and be truly integrated.
The Scots, English, Welsh, and Irish manage it only with some difficulty and nowadays devolution, despite living almost cheek by jowl forever.
And that’s despite an enormous degree of shared culture and overlapping ancestry between the peoples of the British Isles.
A multi-ethnic society is only possible with small numbers of culturally compatible non-Europeans who are intent on fully integrating. We were headed in that direction (with the exception of Islamic fundamentalists) until the numbers became unmanageable and worse we were flooded with certain cultures who aren’t willing to fully integrate.
It is as absurd as saying Multi-Faith religion.
Culture determines what a society is. Different cultures form different societies – therefore multi-cultural society cannot be a singular and is indeed oxymoronic.
The four British nations are culturally a fusion, identical through centuries of proximity, shared Judea-Christian religion, fought wars together, political union, built an Empire together, national identity and intermarriage.
The tensions are not cultural they are political, created by those who want power and control.
Just normal Nigerians – loud and incapable of consideration of anything but themselves
I’d just sell the house to a nice large (preferably 3 generations) muslim family and let them get on with it.
Sell rather than escalate it to a dispute. A dispute must be declared in the pre-sale document. A neighbour dispute makes the house nigh on unsellable.
But why should they be forced to do that? There should be stricter laws on noisy neighbours. I endured1.year of utter misery inflicted on me by a family with a severely autistic child. I sympathise with their plight but the screaming and constant banging drove me tondistraction. They should have been living in specialised accommodation
Old saying: if you don’t like your neighbours, move.
Play them at their own game – Led Zep turned up to 11 at 4am should do it. I’ll leave the track choice to you.
“Rock and roll” would be my choice.
Or else some AC/DC – perhaps “highway to hell”?
May I suggest “Smack my bitch up” from The Prodigy?
Sorry, I missed your subtle allusion to “the immigrant song” very clever!
Unfortunately in this two tier world you’d end up prosecuted the next day.
I had a terraced house where the students next door made so much noise with their all night parties and drumming that my excellent Polish tenants had to leave.I bolted 50 watt speakers to the party wall and played Shostakovich’s Siege of Leningrad at 5am when their party had finished.
Did it work,though?
Yes.
Special directional speakers to be used.
If this family were prosperous, educated, and professional, it has to be asked why they needed to implore the help of Jesus.
Didn’t Jesus say that a person could gain the whole world and lose their soul in the process?
Reverse the races in that sentence and nobody would have difficulty recognising it as prejudice.
Except that this is the one area of life where equality – equal distribution of prejudice – doesn’t exist according to the progressives and centrists.
In any case, upper class Nigerians (what tribe were they?) speak English among themselves as a mark of their superiority over all the lesser ones.
In my experience well-to-do Nigerians are extremely arrogant & snobbish.
It may be that the Nigerian family are deliberately trying to drive out the White family, in order to buy their house cheaply for their Nigerian children or other relatives.
This has long been a standard tactic of Third World Ethnics in the West, especially Muslims in Britain, where they will buy one house on a street, and cause as much trouble as possible for their neighbours on both sides, in order to drive them out and lower the value of all the homes on the street. Then they buy up the houses next door, cause more trouble, and gradually continue until they own the whole street.
There will always be some conflict/competition between villages, counties, countries. However if you come from a ‘shared heritage’, it reduces the chances of falling out. When people (such as the neighbours described in the article) turn up pre-loaded with the race card, then it is so much harder.
My only advice would be try and get a detached house if you possibly can.
My advice would be to move to the country and buy a fascist Labrador… assuming you don’t have the wherewithal to leave the country and, even then, where are you going to go that the insane left aren’t already destroying everything that was good?
I share a private road (accessing 3 houses including mine) in a prosperous part of Yorkshire. The family next door are highly educated, child at the local independent private school, one a dentist & one an A&E consultant both from South Asia. Whilst I don’t share a party wall, I do have responsibility – as do all the road users – for a share of the costs of the road & border maintenance. It has always been a reasonable & shared agreement which I manage – (I moved in over 2 years ago & am widowed & living on my own & female & I wonder if that has a bearing?).
Early last year I received an email saying they no longer wanted to hear anything about any of the matters concerning the road or the boundary & since then there has been a complete refusal to a acknowledge emails or my visits to the doorstep (which has a camera so they know it’s me!)
i am now at a loss to know what to do next – other than resort to solicitors & a management company set-up. A friend suggested that other cultures do respond differently to these sorts… Read more »
It may well be that they are deliberately trying to lower the value of your property and drive you out, so that they can buy it through an agent and eventually buy all the houses. It’s a standard Third World Ethnic tactic in the West.
Unless you are a legally appointed and paid administrator for the site pay your liability to the party ultimately responsible and ignore everything else. Or take advice as to why the other occupants are your problem.
Depends whether there is a maintenance contract and who the signatories to it are and whether there is any legally binding agreement regarding the shared areas. If the arrangements for maintenance are relatively informal then any firm doing work will want paying in full.
It’s not clear why this lady is responsible for managing this shared agreement. As it stands it’s as if she has taken responsibility for ensuring the other residents pay their council tax. Insufficient data!
If there’s a legally binding agreement that the others are not complying with I think you’d need to take them to court. I presume it’s a bit like share of freehold – perhaps there’s an obligation to contribute to a shared maintenance fund, perhaps not. If not, and any work doing is done on a ad-hoc, as-needed basis, then you really need the others to stump up their share of the costs, because no-one is going to do the work on the basis of having to pursue other parties for their share of the price.
I live in a place too with private roads, for which we pay an ‘upkeep’ charge of just ten pounds per year, equivalent these days to five litres of diesel… and no, we still can’t get everybody to pay.
People are (insert your own pejorative), expecting them to be anything better will only disappoint.
Yes, I think that being a lone female means you can be ignored. I suspect that anything beyond their property boundary is of no concern to them, however ramshackle it may become, because that’s how it would be regarded ‘at home’.
This is when having a very large nephew in the Commandos or Airborne, especially an officer, is useful. They have a certain presence and air of authority.
Looks like they’ve declared themselves as an outreach of Piddington, disassociating themselves from the rest of the area.
Are there no covenants or suchlike that indicate what residents are responsible for in the maintenance and repair of certain elements in the immediate area? Is there anything on the council website that identifies what the council and what residents are responsible for in similar instances? Worth a look.
Neighbours like that are unfortunately strewn across the length and breadth of the realm. They want to benefit from the endeavours of others without any input from themselves.
It would be sad, very sad, if subsidence or suchlike occurred directly outside their little kingdom on the roadway that would suddenly necessitate them trying to rejoin the neighbourhood coalition. In that instance, I would refer them to pop into the nearest Screwfix to purchase a couple of inexpensive traffic cones – in the interests of neighbourliness, of course…
How awful for you. We had a shared drive at a previous house, and although we got on well with our neighbours, it still restricted what we could do. We would have liked to have put a gate at the end of the drive to stop people turning round in it – it was block paved and not particularly robust in its construction – but they didn’t want this. When we moved, one of the things on our wish list was, “ no shared drive “. Of course, I realise that not everyone is in a position to choose this.
As the article eventually points out, arseholes come in all different shades. The bit that made it different (in my mind) was the (sneezing) spit in the face. That’s just not British, but probably par for the course in Lagos.
I was fortunate to work with some educated Nigerian engineers who were nothing like this family.
But you didn’t live next door to the Nigerian engineers.
As the author points out, we have home grown idiots too. I guess it’s probably true that you are more likely to encounter these kinds of issues with people from cultures with different social norms. What was entirely avoidable and ha been an own goal is that the focus on “anti-racism” encourages people to play the race card, which just makes the whole thing a lot worse.
Absolutely. And that is where successive British governments have failed Britain so badly. ‘He’s a racist!’ should never be a ‘Get out of Jail free’ for anybody. Anybody at all.
It’s not clear whether the alleged culprits had bought the next door house, or rented it from a buy-to-let outfit. When that happens, tenants come and go, some being fine, others less so.
There’s a potential additional cost. The fact that there has been a formal complaint about a noisy neighbour would have to be declared and would affect the price if the friend puts the house up for sale
That is precisely the intent. The Nigerians want to buy it on the cheap for their Nigerian children or relatives.
You keep saying that Heretic but how would they really be ‘buying it on the cheap’ as all they would really be doing is lowering the attractiveness and therefore property values of the neighbourhood. Are you claiming that having turned the road into a ‘Nigerian enclave/ghetto’ the property prices will suddenly leap back up again making a huge profit for the Nigerians ? How does it benefit them to lower the value of a property they have already bought ?
The property value is not as important as taking ownership of the entire neighbourhood.
Nailed it, Talltone! That is exactly the reason.
Whole areas of London such as Ilford have been taken over by this method. Parking across drives is another way to intimidate. And the mosque provides mortgages with a condition that the house must be sold to muslims.
