Travellers Complain of a Deterioration in Their Mental and Physical Health While Staying at “Prison-Like” Quarantine Hotels

by Michael Curzon
11 May 2021 3:29 PM

People travelling into the U.K. from countries on the Government’s “red list” must isolate for 10 days in a quarantine hotel – and pay £1,750 per adult for the privilege! They’re not exactly getting their money’s worth, however. Some travellers have complained of a deterioration in their mental and physical health while isolating due to a lack of fresh air, exercise and proper food. The Guardian has talked to nine travellers who are or have recently been in quarantine hotels.

Some of them had travelled abroad due to sickness or death of loved ones and so were already in a distressed and traumatised state before entering the quarantine process…

While nobody challenged the need to quarantine, it is the way the process has been handled that has generated the complaints. A Facebook group called U.K. Hotel Quarantine Support Chat has been set up and has thousands of members, many of whom have raised concerns about quarantine arrangements.

Dr Sanjay Gupta, an NHS cardiology consultant, who was returning from Kenya where he had travelled to be with his dying father, said: “Not everyone can afford to pay the £1,750 cost. There seems to be something shamelessly opportunistic about this situation. But if you’re arriving from a red list country you don’t have a choice.”

Dr Thanjavur Bragadeesh, also an NHS consultant, who had returned from India where he was helping to care for his elderly parents after both had had surgery, said: “It took several hours to reach the hotel after arriving at the airport. The food is not good and the quantities are small. I got a small box of cereal for breakfast with a cheese omelette that was so hard that if I had thrown it, it would hit someone. One of the things I got for dinner was half a naan bread. I don’t know who got the other half!”

A quarantine hotel breakfast.

He said people quarantining had to be escorted by security guards for their 15 minutes of fresh air. “We are not prisoners, we are not trying to escape,” he said.

“I really feel for the people who are quarantining with children. The hotel staff have been polite but the conditions here are claustrophobic. It is perfectly reasonable and sensible not to bring infection into the country but things don’t need to be this draconian.”

Zahid Siddiqui, 58, returned from Pakistan where he had spent several months visiting his sick father. He expressed concerns about the lack of ventilation, fresh air and exercise and poor food.

“The whole thing was a nightmare,” he said. “I have various medical conditions such as atrial fibrillation and medical advice is that I need to take daily exercise. But I was only allowed to go outside for two of the 11 days. I have never been in jail in my life but this experience felt like it. I have never before suffered from depression but after my time in the quarantine hotel I now understand the meaning of the word.”

There are currently 43 countries on the Government’s travel “red list“, which will be reviewed, along with the “green” and “amber” lists, every three weeks.

“While nobody challenged the need to quarantine”

Why not? They should absolutely challenge the need to quarantine.
The virus has done a full lap of the UK. There is little danger to us, now, from people travelling here from abroad. Especially in our late spring and summer.

And in any case, the danger from COVID-19, and especially from “variants” has been massively overhyped. For the overwhelming majority of people, either travellers or people staying in the UK, this is not a life-threatening virus.

Agree completely with this. All I can conclude from the setting up of the quarantine hotels is that U.K. is determined to try for zero covid.

The virus is endemic, ‘bringing it in’ doesn’t matter at all. To label variants by country is scientifically insane. Variants just happen and will go on happening. None of them are any more danger to a healthy human immune system than any other. It’s purely about control.

For the price these poor folks are paying the conditions sound dreadful, shouldn’t they be enjoying luxury. And has any research been done showing whether anyone has tested positive whilst staying there?

Oh come on now, they have the services of a prison warder to take them for their fifteen minutes exercise (15 minutes?! aren’t prisoners supposed to get more than that?)

Whether or not this quarantine is required, it is a disgrace that conditions are apparently worse for those obliged to pay small fortunes for it than for guests of Her Majesty in most of the prisons in this country. As with everything else to do with this shameful episode, it is a complete rip-off, and joins the list along with Hancock’s PPE pal deal, the other wasted PPE deals, the unused Nightingale Hospitals, the overpriced and inaccurate tests, the hopeless “apps” and IT systems; in fact, the list is endless.

It always seems to be the case that whenever the country is “in it” up to its neck, as in two World Wars, profiteers, spivs, drones and common criminals spring up like weeds, watered and fed by the Government. Not much difference now, of course.

When, or if this sorry saga comes to some sort of conclusion, we will doubtless see a latter-day Maundy Gregory touting round for honours for money, and a contemporary Lloyd George, in the person of one Johnson, dishing them out accordingly. I hope that his interior design and supply team are suitably rewarded. Witty, Ferguson, and the others should really end up as exhibits in the Hunterian Museum or stuffed, in the Natural History Museum.

Unless the British public wakes up and unites against the terrorist, criminal, genocidal, amoral scum who are controlling this country, this is just the start of their “New Normal”. Never forget that phrase which was thrust into the public consciousness at the start of the scamdemic. They tell you what they are doing. “NEW NORMAL”.

Exactly. Wake up or you and/or your children will be living in a similar prison for the rest of your/their sorry lives. They do not want you using the elites’ resources – they’ll say it’s to reduce CO² but they know that’s bullshit. They really don’t want you using their petroleum, lithium or champagne, or being anywhere within sight of their property in Monaco.

If the lunch and dinner are of a similar poor quality to the breakfast shown, ie full of calories but devoid of nutrients, by the end of 10 days inmates will be suffering from several vitamin deficiencies to the detriment of their health. Who do they sue for causing their consequent poor health?

No, it’s almost impossible to get “institutions” to issue vitamin supplements. And of course they are not allowed outside, and will get very little C or A. After a stressful journey, massively increases likelihood of becoming ill.

There is a saying ” A fool and his money are soon parted ” I am afraid I have no sympathy for those that choose to play along with the Government narrative on travel. Choosing to pay £175 a day in overpriced (quarantine) accommodation is totally nuts and they have more money than sense?.

That rate wouldn’t be allowable under hmrc rules for claiming business expenses, given that it is a luxury price and acceptable accommodation can be sourced at a lower rate.

What a sanctimonious comment! Do you think people were really travelling for any other reason than they had to? The Guardian report refers to visting dying relatives. I expect many are returning from the Gulf states after being made redundant and forced out. The whole quarantine programme is devised to win the votes of despicable people.

They’re not quarantine hotels, they’re internment camps.

Dr Thanjavur Bragadeesh is wrong, they are prisoners.

It’s a disgraceful and inhuman way to treat people and we should be ashamed.

Its time to storm these hotels and free the people trapped inside if they’re not even getting halfway decent treatment. Not everyone had the luxury of being able to come back to the UK before this was setup, and its clear that the quarantine is unnecessary. Just test ppl and tell them to not go to crowded spaces for 5-10 days, that is plenty cautious enough to avoid them giving whatever variant SAGE and the PM is scared of to other ppl. Its time for the people of the UK to revolt, watch V for Vendetta, and start standing up to Boris Johnson and stage a revolution if need be.

Yes, but who’s money are they going to be paid with?
Who’s money are the claimants going to get?
Our tax money.
Hancock, Johnson, Whittey et al are not going to be harmed because they won’t be held personally liable. The worse that will happen is that they lose their positions and then oh dear, what’s going to happen? Off to some cosy little sinecure after a book deal and lecture tour.
They need to be held personally accountable for what they’ve done. I’d like to see them all sued into a cardboard box behind a Lidl but I don’t see that ever happening.

If the detainees all walked out of these internment camps what would the dictatorship do?

They cannot use force to detain them

OK they could slap a £10,000 fine on them, but the CPS has not successfully prosecuted a single case in 14months

The pig dictator would not allow one of these cases to get to court because he knows he would be trounced

Given the news yesterday that the entire covid persecution system has failed to attain a single successful prosecution, I would be walking out. Let them try and impose and fine. The chances of it ever getting to court will be almost nil.

Message from a friend: “I picked up a friend from quarantine at Edinburgh airport on Monday, so OTT! I was greeted by 3 guards including one with a gun asking who I was and why I was there. My friend was allowed out for 5 mins a day under escort and despite having a third negative test on day 8 had to stay until day 11. One of the many hidden harms” Despotic governance indeed! Who decided the guards needed to be armed? Why three? Surely it’d be better for these travellers to deliberately break the law and go to prison, and get better food, accommodation, more exercise, and save themselves £1750 a pop?

How is it that governments never learn and the masses are so willing to follow. The need for quarantine has long since passed. As soon as the infection had spread randomly around the Country it was too late.

Every action the government has taken since then has just made the situation worse. The biggest danger now is not from people coming into the Country but from super strains of the virus that will likely result from the mass vaccinations that are currently in progress.

Doesn’t anyone remember why we now have so many strains of bacteria that have become not only resistant but completely immune to anti biotics which were given out like smarties for so long.
