May I put in a good word for May 12th as England’s Real National Day, for it was on May 12th, 878 AD that the most important battle in English History was fought and won by King Alfred the Great and his Anglo-Saxon Army, laying the foundation for the nation of England: The Battle of Edington.

“The Viking army at last made its decisive strike against Wessex in the depth of winter in early 878. They attacked the royal estate at Chippenham, likely where Alfred’s court was based at the time, and quickly overran the kingdom. They “drove many of the people over the sea” while Alfred was forced to flee with a “little band” of followers into the marshes of Somerset (Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, M. Swanton translation, 878). If there was one moment when the future of the Anglo-Saxons was most in doubt, when the coming into existence of an English nation seemed most improbable — it was now.”

” The idea of “England” as we know it today rested entirely upon Alfred and his group of followers, strung out across the marshes of Somerset as they tried to survive and chip away at the occupying army.”

“It seems eminently possible that had Alfred the Great been defeated at his last stand at Edington, that the subsequent history of the British Isles would have looked profoundly different. The idea of “England” as we now understand it may never have come into being. Hastings decided who would rule England. Edington decided whether England would come into existence at all.”

“AI is not the miracle fix businesses might think it is” The clue is in the alternative name “Large Language Model”. They interpret and respond in realistic language, but they do not understand anything.

Volkswagen face $1.7 billion fine for missing emissions targets

Behind all the ideology, all the narrative, all the manifested good intentions, really, what you always end up finding is an extortion scheme.

That’s ultimately collectivism is. A system of extortion, run by a few to loot the many.

Don’t bother.

Climate change did it.

They were only following orders.

“Bill Clinton signed tough illegal immigration legislation in 1996 – so why does the modern Left treat deportation as an extremist position?”

The article is paywalled, so o can’t read it but, if the author doesn’t conclude it’s simply “because it’s Trump doing it”, well, he’s wrong…

”a manifesto of higher taxes, more handouts and nationalisation”

We know, only too well, that in the last two years Labour have repeatedly ignored their promises and have done things that were not in their manifesto, or indeed not done things that were.

But, this is a fundamental change even to that… based on the protest vote of fewer than 20% of the voting public.

There is no mandate for this, there must be another election. Surely there are rules about this sort of thing?

The scales fell from my eyes reading this, I must say. Bad enough when it was framed as a tragic accident but to now have it confirmed that soldiers were given explicit orders to just kill anyone, without even establishing first if they were friend or foe, is beyond horrific;

”When three Israeli hostage were killed in Gaza by Israel Defense Forces gunfire in December 2023, the military described it as a “tragic accident.” But in a recent interview, the mother of one of the hostages said the troops involved were given orders to shoot on sight, which ultimately resulted in her son’s death.
“I heard this from every soldier who spoke to me… They received an unequivocal order: Everything you see — and you will not hesitate, even if they’re civilians — you shoot to kill,” she told the television station.

According to one of those soldiers, Talalka, an Arab hostage from the Bedouin town of Hura, had led the group of three in approaching Israeli forces.
“The moment you recognize an Arab face in Gaza, the first intuition is that these are Hamas terrorists trying to carry out an attack,” the soldier said in a recording published by… Read more »

I have generally stayed out of the discussions around the events of October 7 (and events before and since in that part of the world) because it has never made sense to me. The most heavily guarded border in the whole world, bristling with military tech and surveillance… I just don’t get it, and I still don’t, but your comment and its references go some way to explaining things.

I know one thing, at least. There are extremist nutcases in power everywhere, there always were, and there always will be.

It’s the fact we had all these top brass, well-credentialed ex-military personnel and war correspondent experts from all over the place saying how the IDF is the most ethical military in the world. How the hell do they reconcile this carefully curated image they’re all putting out to the world with this most unethical Hannibal Directive thingy, which is the reality on the ground? Can you imagine British troops in Iraq or Afghanistan callously shooting unarmed civilians, each other or even British civilians in some other context, because they were following orders to do so? How can it be classed as a war crime for everybody else’s military but not for Israel’s? Although I continue to support Israel’s right to exist and obviously oppose all terrorism, I think this puts things in a whole different light.
Netanyahu making out like they cherish life and the Jihadi nextdoor neighbours are the death cultists, whilst they apply this ”shoot ’em all” strategy out of sight of the rest of the world… I posted that ToI piece on Andrew Fox’s Twitter page and he removed it. Not great PR, I guess.
The below source is very biased ( I don’t agree Israel are… Read more »
