New York City’s new Health Commissioner has caused anger after announcing that children aged five and under should wear face masks indefinitely, bucking the national trend of ditching masks and going in the face of evidence that kids are at almost zero risk from COVID-19. MailOnline has the story.
“I think it’s indefinite at this point,” Dr. Ashwin Vasan said Friday during a COVID-19 briefing in Queens. “People who have tried to predict what’s going to happen in the future in this pandemic have repeatedly found egg on their face, as they say, and I’m not going to do that here today.”
The woke commissioner, who lives in Brooklyn with his partner and three children, including a four-year-old son, argued he wanted to mask children because under fives are not vaccinated.
“As a father of a two-and-a-half-year old-and two other older kids, I want to keep them as safe as possible. I would love nothing more than to send my son to daycare without a mask,” Vasan said, according to CBS New York.
“But as a scientist, and as a doctor, and an epidemiologist, I want to keep him safe because he’s not eligible for a vaccine.”
His comments sparked fear and fury among frustrated New York parents who face having to force their young children to keep wearing a mask in the face of mounting evidence that they are at little risk.
It also comes as every state, including California which ended its mandate last week, has lifted or announced plans to lift masking requirements in schools.
The lone holdout is Hawaii, which is dropping its indoor mask mandate on March 26th but expected to extend the requirement for schools.
New York state and city also lifted school mask mandates earlier this month.
The nonsense piled upon nonsense of this measure boggles the mind. There is no robust evidence that surgical masks (let alone cloth masks) significantly reduce the spread of respiratory disease including COVID-19. There is little evidence that vaccination does much to reduce the spread for long. Children are at very low risk of serious disease from COVID-19. And Omicron is even milder than earlier variants. Plus masks are harmful. No wonder the rest of the country and world is dropping interventions of all kinds, including mask mandates. But not Dr. Vasan in NYC.

The neurotic paternalists can’t play daddy and mummy with adults any more so they are going down the age range. Just like Sturgeon and her public health panic merchants here in Scotland,it not about masks or the other ineffective and poorly evidenced NPI’s. its all about their need fir control. The NY guy hiding behind his status, doesn’t want the endemic to be seen in proportion. They want to blow up and magnify the threat because they don’t want to lose their status as our protectors.
I’d simply have to move to a new state. I find it physically abhorrent seeing children in masks – like someone’s kicked me j the stomach.
What I don’t understand is why are the majority ok with this policy especially when it’s out of line with the other states.
This person should be stripped of his medical license and of the custody for his children and be admitted to a lunatic asylum ASAP.
There is no other way to deal with him and such people anymore.

I totally agree with the comments below. It is sickening and evil beyond imagination. Every single parent (and grandparent) in NYC should take to the streets to demonstrate. And they should not comply: if all children turned up at school unmasked, they could hardly send them all home (but of course there are probably the few who will continue to comply).

I went into London yesterday for the Worldwide Freedom rally. 90% unmasked on both train in and on tube. One man and one man only insisted on having his mask on inside the pub. He took it off between swigs!! Absolute tit.
Someone has to get to people like this. If logic can’t persuade them to shut their mouths, something else must be used.
It’s even worse than you say, Will. Young children are actually more likely to be harmed by the gene-changing jabs than they are by the wretched virus.

Scientist? Really? And where is the appropriately control grouped proper study to show masks do anything? Further more, how many under 5s without serious health conditions die with/from Covid in the whole US? Bet you won’t get to your toes sir. This man should be banned from public service and anything to do with health for life, because he believes in voodoo essentially. Thank God the masks are gone (about 10% I observe). I’d like a law passed to ban the mandate until true clinical study shows it makes more than marginal difference.

It is a reiteration of what we have learned over the last two years and shouldve known long before. Our entire ruling class, its lawyers, administrators, scientists and seemingly teachers too are all operating on the level of fear. The very structures that we have built have been built on the labour of those most acquiescent to fear and now we reap the bitter harvest. We failed to remain truly vigilant. The best thing you can do is to understand this now and then move forward on the basis of this understanding.

Children just should not be allowed out of their homes, where they should be confined entirely to the ground floor (stairs are a risk).They should be forbidden to enter the kitchen, and going in the garden is so fraught with danger, from the doorstep, the poisonous plants, the insects and the possibility of being attacked by a rabied pigeon that it is totally proscribed.
Better still, don’t have kids – have you heard about the dangers of childbirth?

My worry is the whole masking thing was about de-humanising. Makes it easier to abuse people and not see them as fellow humans. And this to children too.
Now we have demonising of Putin and Russia – makes it easier to justify killing the enemy. Ukraine is a complex situation none of which has been explained on MSM. We are not without blame, the West has done things that helped bring about these event, there are Ukrainian Nazis and there are Ukrainian Russians and there has been fighting and bad feeling within Ukraine since the fall of the USSR. This is not a Hollywood movie with the good guys wearing white vs the bad guys in black..
I hear many voices urging escalation. I wonder how many will think themselves virtuous and clever watching their children vomit with radiation poisoning before their organs start to break down – assuming they’re not vaporised.
