A reader has pointed out the additional costs suffered by British travellers to France because of Government regulations – specifically, the requirement to have three PCR tests at a minimum of £120 each.
If you want to come back from France to the UK you have to provide a negative PCR test. That costs a very reasonable € 15… in France
But on your return to the UK, you have to undergo two more PCR tests, on day two and day five after you arrive. For some mysterious reason, the cheapest tests in the UK are £120(!) each from Boots (and ridiculous amounts more from other providers). Even the Boots “bargain basement” cost adds an outrageous £360 to the total cost of a trip to France, as, of course, you need a PCR test outward bound too!
My partner and I have written to our MP about this racketeering, but it’s obviously Government policy to deter people from going to deserted beaches abroad and to have them packed on British beaches instead.
We own a gîte in France and hate to think what our fully-booked summer will look like once a party of 10 realises that the Government has permitted £3,600 to be added to their bill!
If the Government sincerely wants to free us from our shackles, it should clamp down on this cynical profiteering and set up a simple system, as for the lorry drivers.
As Lord David Blunkett recently pointed out, travel restrictions imposed by the Government impact not only tourism (the topic which receives the most attention from the broadcast media) but also trade and aviation.

If France is put on the red list, that £3,600 is each. Before long the UK mimicks New Zealand. There is an increasing similarity between the situation in 4 of the ‘5-eyes’ countries. It is only because of the resistance of the red states in the US that that is not 5. However Washington controls external borders so this resistance is limited as yet.
Hi is it reasonably priced in France generally but I have seen prices the same as the Uk for pcr tests.
The test travel kit (or similar name) which we have to order before we travel through the Government website (there’s a link!) is £210 per person – I read for day 2 and day 8 testing when home!
So I totted it all the nearest place and convenient for us to go to for the outbound trip the would cost is £139 per person as we would have to have a 24 hour turn around as we travel by car with our dog and would need to allow for delays and staying over in England as we are a 5 hour drive from Folkstone. Total around £1,200!!!!!! For 2.
Thanks Boris and Matt for that because we can not afford the extra costs for the pcr tests. We aren’t ill we don’t have Covid and are fit as fiddles.
We’ve worked hard for everything we have in our lives and all we want to do is go to France and live our lives and have a
bloomin holiday.
I’ve written to our MP about she is a great lady but I’m not she can help with us with this. She forwarded our questions to Schapps and the reply my husband received as pathetic and ignored the all the points.
Why are the pcr tests still being used they were not designed to test for viruses. Everyone knows that. They can not detect a live virus. The WHO said so.
Blimey I could go on about all this. Never have we felt so let down by a ‘Conservative Government’. Goodness knows what my parents would think. Disappointed so not explain it I’m so angry. Written to various MPs and asked them to do something with this dreadful lot down in London. Shame on you all shame on you.
Sounds cheaper to buy a rigid inflatable boat and some good quality charts of the channel. Hope for good weather. It’s what I would do if abroad and wanting to get back (would anyone want to come back to a locked down country anyway), and if you’re doing it both ways it also saves on any bullshit security theatre at border corssings beyond the biosecurity theatre nonsense.
The globalists plan for their sustainable planet is to stop the plebs travelling, to price us out of the market, this does not apply to them and their excessive lifestyles of course.
Always ways around their dictats…. travelling en masse in gypsy caravans?! Even the masses who act like good little boys and girls will tire of restrictions in the end.
A scam.
A few months ago we could get a free PCR test at one of the centres. Is this still the case? If the government is spending £30,000,000 of our money every day testing millions of our children with the Lateral flow test, why could we not use those for holiday travel? c.£25 up your nose. Or is it not reliable enough? In which case why are we bothering with it for our children? It is of course all a complete waste of time and a scam to stop us leaving the country. This government really is beginning to disgust me.
