According to a new report from the Conservative-aligned think tank Policy Exchange, an ‘Advisory Opinion’ issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) may leave Britain exposed to excessive climate litigation. This litigation may include trillions of pounds in climate reparations, the report claims, and could prevent the exploitation of North Sea oil and gas, even if the government was willing to allow it. It is indeed an extremely worrying possibility and a grotesque departure from the notions of democracy and national sovereignty. But why is anyone surprised by this destruction of democratic national sovereignty? Surely that has long been the point of green globalism?
It’s a strange report to see from Policy Exchange, because the think tank has long been at the centre of driving the green agenda into the Tory perspective. Policy Exchange has published many dozens of reports that candidly give thanks to its sponsors, which include the European Climate Foundation (ECF), Bloomberg Philanthropies, WWF and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), which have given support to green policies. Policy Exchange also incubated some significant climate wonk careers, including Guy Newey, now CEO of the Net Zero research funding quango Catapult Energy Systems and Director of the UK100 campaign, which inserts the Green Blob into local governments to accelerate Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and Clean Air Zones, despite local opposition. Another Policy Exchange alumnus is Ben Caldecott, co-founder of the Conservative Environment Network and of the Oxford Smith School’s Sustainable Finance Group, where he is Associate

Some people think we still live in a democracy. That was subsumed long ago
Just dawned on them had it, what a scam it all is?
What smart people.
People incapable of earning a living for themselves in productive, wealth creating economic activity, infers think tanks where they get paid for, er… what exactly?
Do we have too many lawyer MPs and therefore undue deference to “International Law”? I see the US is not only ignoring the ICJ but now also the ICC. I guess their politicians are proud of their country and keen to see it prosper in the future.
In happier times a piece of pondlife like philippe sands would have been hanged drawn and quartered.
A good reason for answering ‘yes’ when asked if this country was better in the past than it is today.
Be more clear. Policy Exchange has been aligned with The Conservative Party, not with a conservative philosophy. It is as Green globalist and left as the Tories.
But what is this we read. Tory party policy work has been done for them using shady money from difficult to trace and overseas sources. That will continue for all varieties of the left.
For Reform, however, even Brits who want to donate openly will have to return to the UK for a full year to qualify. No doubt because Labour expect to have an election in that time and they want to starve Reform of funds.
So does the fact the US and China have left the ICJ mean that there is no judgement that they must pay the rest of the world climate reparations ?
How can it possibly be true that the UK alone is solely responsible through an unproven theory under which it contributes less than 1% of ’emmissions’.
What forces are at work in the world that have actively worked to undermine the reputation of Britain away from being globally respected for its democracy, freedom of speech, fair police & justice system, and free press? It seems as though a deliberate enduring campaing is being waged to destroy Britain. As though only by destroying Britain can the world be collapsed into a dictatorship ‘for the greater good’.
Joint and several liability. And what a jolly jape for the lawyers.
“Advisory Opinions” issued by the “International Court of Justice”, ah yes, reminds me of those “guidelines” issued by the “World Health Organisation”.
All very useful, virtuous and important sounding things for domestic politicians to hide behind, use as an excuse for pursuing their own agenda. See also ECHR.
