Austria’s equivalent of the House of Commons voted yesterday in favour of the new Government proposals to fine the unvaccinated the equivalent of thousands of pounds. The BBC has more.
The law, which is due to come into effect on February 1st, would make Austria the first [i.e., only] European country to introduce a mandatory jab.
From mid-March the law will see adults unvaccinated against COVID-19 subjected to fines of up to €3,600 (£2,994).
So far, 72% of Austrians have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
The bill must now pass the upper house and be signed into law by President Alexander Van der Bellen, steps largely expected to be formalities.
The vaccine order is expected to remain in force until January 2024, with the government investing €1.4bn in measures designed to encourage unvaccinated people to come forward for the jab.
Addressing lawmakers on Thursday afternoon, Health Minister Wolfgang Mueckstein called the measure a “big, and, for the first time, also lasting step” in Austria’s fight against the pandemic.
Chancellor Karl Nehammer told reporters ahead of the vote that vaccines were “an opportunity for our society to achieve lasting and continuous freedom, because the virus cannot restrict us any further”.
A majority of MPs, including those from Mr. Nehammer’s governing centre-right coalition and the three main opposition parties, backed the bill, by 137 votes to 33.
The far-right Freedom Party, which has courted the votes of Austria’s substantial anti-vaccine minority, has taken a stand against the bill.
Its leader, Herbert Kickl, said the mandate “paves the way to totalitarianism in Austria” and vowed he would continue to refuse vaccination in defiance of the new law.
Since authorities announced they intended to introduce the mandate in November the capital, Vienna, has seen regular protests, with some numbering over 40,000 people.
The demonstrations have attracted a coalition of anti-vaccine campaigners and far-right extremists, and authorities have warned that they have been radicalising in recent weeks, with new “protective zones” declared around healthcare facilities and vaccination centres to protect workers.
Similar vaccine mandates are being introduced in several other countries, including in Greece, where jabs are now obligatory for everyone aged 60.
In neighbouring Germany, the new Government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said it will introduce a vaccination bill in the Bundestag in March.

The BBC article links to an earlier article from last month where the BBC sets out three arguments in favour of forced vaccination (thanks Auntie) and three against. The three in favour include that we’ve tried everything else and it will supposedly “end the cycle of lockdowns” – right, like everything else governments have inflicted on us these past two years. The arguments against include that some people may not like it and, well, maybe we haven’t exhausted all our other options – so not balanced at all, and no mention of the crucial fact that the vaccines don’t prevent infection or transmission, or that the majority of new infections and deaths are in the vaccinated.

Well, the UK did away with most of its lockdown measures. The Supreme Court in the U.S. ruled against vaccine mandates in companies regulated by OSHA that have 100 or more employees. (But kept the mandates in health care professions).
So there are some encouraging stories/developments. But just as many “alarming” developments. I’m not in the camp that thinks good days are ahead because I simply think the people behind the curtain are so committed to their totalitarian agenda.

A legal argument about the right not to be infected? Where is this right enshrined, pray tell? There may well be legislation regarding *intentional infection* (I believe there is some in relation to people who know they are HIV and do not tell sexual partners – but I assume that if they do disclose, the partner cannot claim any right to be protected from infection). A nonsense and unethical argument – where would it end? We all carry various viruses at various times, some of which may be generally harmless but which could harm a particularly fragile person – are we to be held accountable, even though we had no knowledge? Life as we know it would come to a standstill. There was a time when you actually had to have the ability to apply critical reasoning when you studied law.
My favourite was “we have tried everything else”. Not true, there are 2 options not yet tried.
1) Require every person who tests positive to put a plastic bag over their head, tie it tightly and not remove it for half an hour. That would probably be quite effective, were it not for the fact that there are millions of animinal reservoirs of this virus.

Pax-americana ( defined as US with UK support) is ending.
The hypocrisy is indeed rife. There have been ‘harsh words’ used in Dutch parliament and PM Rutte has been whining how society has hardened and people speak more harshly than in the past. But not a bloodly peep about Macron’s “There are French citizens and there are unvaxxed scum” (freely translated in accordance with the sentiment intended).
However, NL is not that close behind. Although I have not always been a fan of the highly multi-party system we have, it has meant quite a large number of genuine opposition parties. At this point, 2 members of the 4-party coalition are not in favour of 2g passes for example. Mayors are increasingly disagreeing with lockdown measures, prominent figures speaking out in national newspapers against 2g.
Don’t get me wrong, NL has gone along way too far, it should be ashamed of itself, but this has been primarily driven by Brussels/Berlin-obeying collaborators in the government. I don’t think that many really support this stuff, but you know how it goes – one needs to think of that golden ticket to the dream job in the political walhalla that is no-elections, no-taxed income, no-accountability Brussels.

I think we have a tendency to think that sanity is returning because repudiation of lockdowns is becoming more widespread. But what I see is more like a shifting of the argument. They know that people won’t stand for lockdowns because they’ve sacrificed so much already, not least by being jabbed repeatedly.
But they aren’t past blaming the unjabbed for the failures of the measures – including the jabs. In fact, it’s a clear scapegoating exercise by governments to shift any potential anger away from themselves.
I wouldn’t count on the UK government not falling for that temptation.

The very best argument they have is that they are ineffective against an ever-changing virus, the worst that they have caused and will continue to cause more harm than good. The figures speak for themselves, no matter how much they try to fiddle them. At some point the argument will be made that at date X it became clear that further investigation of the vaxx was necessary. The failure to do so should and probably will lead to criminal liability. Once it became clear the vaxx was not stopping transmission or infection, roll-outs should have been halted or at least slowed down to investigate.
I don’t think people actually care anymore if the jabs work or not.
In the minds of the majority, I would say, the jabs were never about protecting themselves but rather a condition of return to “normality”. It’s really like a tax.

I think people here in NL are increasingly questioning the vaxx. Booster uptake has not been as high as they’d hoped and is falling.
Yesterday the head of the OMT explained this as follows: most people got their booster. A fairly large group hasn’t got their booster yet because “either it’s not been 3 months since their 2nd shot, they’ve recently been infected or will be shortly“.
No, they know it doesn’t stop infection or transmission and no one wants to keep getting poked. Yes, there are some people who feel they should be rewarded for having got poked and are happy for the unvaxxed to get punished for not stepping up (even though it wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference). But as the double-vaxxed become unvaxxed, that view will change.
That is why I think we ultimately win.

I have a couple of good friends in Austria. They’re well educated professionals in their 40’s and are both un-jabbed. Both have had Covid & for a while were able to use their “recovered” status to access a pseudo normal life. They’ve had to close a number of their hospitality business interests as they refuse to follow government diktats and discriminate against the unvaccinated.
I think they were hoping that the vaccine mandate was a bluff by the government that would never actually be enacted. Sadly, they’re now terrified of what’s coming their way and are looking for a way out. Moving to Croatia might be a possibility, but that’ll be career ending for them both. These are good, hard working people and Austria can ill afford to lose them.
In the meantime, they tell me that the bulk of the population is fully onside with the mandate and are only too happy to comply with any discriminatory nonsense the government instruct.
It’s a frightening time to be awake in Austria. Having spent a lot of time there over the years (including running a business), I’m not massively shocked at the turn of events -but I do feel desperately sorry for my unvaccinated friends. I’ll never go back there now.
A know a couple who live there, very close friends.
Both unvaxxed. She is Dutch and normally they come to visit her family several times a year. They came in summer 2020 and 2021, Christmas 2020. This Christmas they were under house arrest in Austria, as if they were criminals.
I hope that he is now actively seeking work in NL, they know they have an apartment ready and waiting for them here should they need it.
Some years back I was travelling by train from Vienna to Budapest and was waiting in the 1st class lounge for the train. Drinks were free, but were not allowed to be taken out of the lounge. A young Asian lad had a coke bottle in his hand, saw his train was leaving soon and started to rush off. Someone in the lounge stood by the door and insisted that he leave the bottle behind, literally bullied the kid and wouldn’t let him leave. At first I thought it was someone who worked there, but no, simply another passenger. That’s when I realised just why Austria had no problem with the Anschluss.
The apartment house I lived in in Austria had an enormous list of rules, some of which I thought were a bit of a joke when I moved in. No flushing the loo or talking on the balcony after 10.00pm, no use of my washing machine on certain days of the week, etc. I soon learned that they weren’t a joke and that to do any of the “banned” things would result in a knock on my door or a phone call from my neighbours, a visit from the caretaker, a stern letter from the management committee & disapproving looks from all & sundry. The Austrians are certainly in the big league (with the Germans) when it comes to following rules and revelling in being told what to do.
It didn’t take long until it dawned on me that I was going to struggle to fit in over there.
In ethics there is deontogical ethics (rule following), and consequentialists. I like to think in the UK we are a lot more consequential except pockets of the population – fearful elderly and middle age women seem to be our demographic of blind rule followers since 2020, understandably though thanks to two years of government campaigns

I lived in a house (fortunately) in a small town just outside Bankfurt am Main years ago. I was similarly disbelieving when told we couldn’t run the washing machine on Sundays. We had a giant basement which was pretty soundproof, so naughtily did so anyways.
Having said that, I lived in Barcelona for several years, in an apartment with walls and floors like paper (actually, thinner). There I had neighbours who ran washing machines at 3 a.m., people were on their balconies and rooftops talking way past midnight. It did occur to me that this was why the Germanic countries had those rules (not NL, thank goodness). It also occurred to me that I wouldn’t trade all the noisiness and laissez-faire of Spain for Germany’s silence and order for anything. Soulless Bankfurt or wonderful Barcelona – absolutely no contest.

Why the repeated injections though? Unless the injections themselves are the actual aim.
