Lammy Backtracks on Claim Farage “Once Flirted With Hitler Youth”

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has been forced to row back on his bizarre claim that Nigel Farage “once flirted with the Hitler Youth”, which Farage has denied. The Telegraph has more.

The Deputy Prime Minister repeated allegations that the Reform UK leader marched through a village “shouting Hitler Youth songs” while a schoolboy.

Mr Farage has always denied the allegations, which stem from a 1981 letter from one of his schoolteachers and were first made more than a decade ago.

Mr Lammy made the comments amid a deepening racism row between Labour and Reform.

Asked whether he thought Mr Farage was a racist, the Justice Secretary told the BBC: “This is calling out his policies, his policies that would line people up who have a right to be in this country, who might be Indian, who might be Nigerian, and send them home. It’s not British. It doesn’t respect our values…

“I’m not going to play the man. I’m playing the ball, as our leader did.

“I will leave it for the public to come to their own judgements about someone who once flirted with Hitler Youth when he was younger.”

Hours later, Mr Lammy backtracked by saying: “He has denied it and so I accept that he has denied it and I would like to clarify that position.”

On Sunday, the Prime Minister branded Nigel Farage’s plans to make it harder for migrants to claim benefits racist, before announcing similar proposals of his own.

He used his speech to the Labour conference on Tuesday to wrap himself in the flag and accuse the Reform leader of not liking Britain.

Minutes after the speech, Mr Farage hit back, calling it a “desperate last throw of the dice” and accusing Sir Keir of inciting violence against Reform.

Got to love Lammy’s “I won’t play the man. But he was involved with Hitler Youth. That’s all I’m saying.” I’m not sure Lammy understands what ‘not playing the man’ means…

Meanwhile, it’s emerged that Nigel Farage’s taxpayer-funded security was cut by 75% just weeks ago. Reform says if anything happens to Farage, “we will hold Keir Starmer responsible”.

Wasn’t it Mrs T who said she was happy when people started attacking her personally as she knew that meant they’d run out of arguments?

Does anyone know what a Hitler youth song is, or how it sounds? What words. We have to assume it is in German. Do you think the school teacher would know what someone sang? And why would the one pupil sing it but not the others? And when Farage was a school kid the war must have just ended and people were still raw from the devastation?
yet somehow some pupil openly sang a German song like that?
Lammy and co are so desperate for any scandal because they are frightened of a Reform victory.
Suddenly they stop attacking Kemi and co.
Oh, Lammy’s English is terrible!

Most likely “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” from the film Cabaret?

Sorry no, I believe that was written especially for the film by Kander and Ebb. (who were Jews!). The boy singing was just an actor – and I understand his name is not even on the credit list..

Brilliant song and film though!

Well, I’m more than a decade older than Farage, and we still played in air-raid shelters and had to watch out for unexploded bombs. But we used to march around doing Nazi salutes and saying “Achtung, Spitfire!” because we knew our country had beaten Hitler, and it was OK to mock him… or even to play a war game and be on the German side.

It’s odd how the taboo has only grown up as those actually involved have died off.

I find it strange that the fascists of the 20th century were mainly socialists who were supported in their early stages by very, very rich industrialists.
https://www.brennancenter.org/our-work/analysis-opinion/how-big-business-bailed-out-nazis
A very similar scenario seems to be playing out now where some very wealthy people in the west support socialism.

The fascists of the 20th century were never ‘socalists¹’ and that they were supported by wealthy capitalists associated with reactionary right (monarchists), eg, the prominent DNVP member Alfred Hugenberg who sponsored the 1932 election campaign of the NSDAP, enabling Hitler to do hitherto unheard of things like travelling by plane to all major German cities for speaking appearances, is a conclusive proof of that. These were sworn
enemies of the German socialists (SPD and KPD) who by-and-large controlled the German republic of that time and the feeling was entirely mutual.

But that’s obviously entirely unknown to some random American whose view of the world starts and ends with the USA. A good start to become familiar with German history of
the 20th century is to discard everything any American who is anyhow involvled with
contemporary domestic politics of the USA ever wrote or said about it. These are all
gross misinterpretations created to be suitable for these domestic politics.

¹ That’s still a term used for loosely or entirely unassociated groups which came to be around the middle of the 19th century in Germany and Austria to form societies (Sozietäten) for the self-improvement of working class people, mainly… Read more »

Fascism fits into the left or so called “right tendency” of the socialist spectrum, the term was coined, I believe, by Stalin. It’s a fusion of socialists and corporate entities who see socialists as an easy option to make money.
Politically fascism evolves predominantly from the left. Mussolini and Hitler were socialists and they got support and money from industrialists. Fascism evolved in Italy in WWI not in Germany.

I go agree that some monarchists support fascism, they are by their nature authoritarian. The exception being the British monarchy which is a constitutional monarchy. Although there are some doubts as to whether some were fascists.

Franco was neither, but he was from a naval family who were of the officer class, he was also an authoritarian.

But one thing is sure and that is conservatism is not in the communist/ socialist/fascist spectrum. In fact Stalin despised fascists because the were too close to the centre and indulged in private enterprise.

The nationalist side of fascism is ultranationalist. Neither reform nor the conservatives fit the bill. There is a big difference between wanting to control mass immigration and nationalism. In fact reform are not against immigration, they want it to be… Read more »

Rather gives the game away – send them home.

When did the Hitler Youth fold? And Farage was born?

For a world famous historian and mathmetician to make such glaring mistakes is deeply troubling.

there is quite a bit about this childhood behaviour online. Farage has said that there were some leftie type teachers ant his school and that he and his mates liked to wind them up about by baiting them with German references etc. Mostly likely goose stepping, saying Heil Hitler and stuff I presume.

Do you remember the furore over Prince Harry dressing as a Nazi for a fancy dress party? To provoke anger in those days this is what one did. Later the punks used swastikas for same effect ……..

Oh well, arrest me now. As I child I learnt German at school, before the days of the EU, so it was not normal behaviour (we only had six people in our German A level class). I rather enjoyed reading the books of Sven Hassel, bit fruity and quite violent, but I was only thirteen or fourteen years old, and while reading these will have learnt Horst Wessel Lied. I must be as much a member of the Hitler Youth, therefore, as Starmer is for his young communist work camp holiday in Czechoslovakia. Or maybe we’re not all the people we were when we were young, but he was a rounded twenty three year old by then.

Labour are terrified of Farage and with good reason, if things continue as they are he will destroy them at the next election. All these racism attacks look desperate, but IMHO they are much more sinister than that, they are inciting violence, and when you consider Labour have cut Farage’s security by 75% it looks like their actual policy is to see him dead.

Nigel Farage is 61 now and he will, like all other people, have done a lot of things he wouldn’t do again today when he was still about 50 years younger (random guess of
mine). There’s no reason why something like this should even be discussed as he isn’t 11 (or 15 or 17) anymore.

Starmer is Stalinist in his treatment of political opponents, in his nd his Parties behaviour towards the electorate, his cosying up to other Communist states, the i.D. social credit system, the suppression of free speech whilst gaslighting and telling us we are still free to speak, in his support of inversion morals, be it telling us women do not exist as any man can be one, to the support of communities whose behaviours and beliefs are anti Christian and anti British, his economic policies which are driving the economy into bankruptcy.
The Labour Party is the one that is akin to one of the worlds worst most oppressive regimes, and that was Stalinist Russia

Someone who believes that what Farage did in school is anyhow relevant for UK politics today ought to have his mental competency assessed to determine if was actually appropriate to declare him an adult when he reached the customary age for that. It doesn’t matter in the slightest if such stories are substantiated or not. They’re simply an irrelevant distraction.

A good way to stop people from talking about some topic X you don’t want them to talk about is to attack them personally with some gross and unsubstantiated claim. Chances are that this will trigger a heated defence and lead to a merry mudslinging contest which will accomplish the original objective of ending or at least seriously impairing the discussion of the undesired topic.

A good way to counter that is to point out briefly that the claim doesn’t matter for some reason and then ignore it in favour continuing to talk about the original topic.
