NHS Staff Should be Given “Enforced Career Breaks” for Their Mental Health, Says Prince of Wales

by Will Jones
5 March 2025 6:23 PM

The Prince of Wales has suggested that NHS staff should be given “enforced breaks” in their careers for the sake of their mental health to help prevent burnout. The Telegraph has more

The Prince, visiting a hospital in Berkshire, spoke of his concern that front-line medical staff were putting their mental health needs aside for the greater good.

Telling doctors and nurses that he knew “everyone in the NHS is there to care for others”, he observed that too often “the last person who gets looked after is the individual”.

The Prince Royal Berkshire Hospital’s Oasis Health and Wellbeing Centre and garden was set up for staff with funding from NHS Charities Together in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Staff at the hospital cared for the first UK patient to die after testing positive for COVID-19, a woman in her 70s, exactly five years ago to the day since Prince William’s visit.

“Everyone in the NHS is there to care for others, so the last person who gets looked after is the individual,” he said, in conversation with staff and volunteers.

“I’ve seen when I’ve worked with doctors and nurses, when I’ve worked with paramedics, they always put it down the line because they don’t want to put their workload on someone else.

“For me, looking into the nation’s mental health over the last few years, unless there’s almost enforced breaks in someone’s career, as part of your career development, we’re never going to get to that point where you can look after their mental health, because you always rely on the individual to put their hand up.”

Worth reading in full.

The PoW must be given a permanent career break for his wokism.
Wouldn’t be missed.

If you recall he, Harry and Katherine were at the absolute fore front of the Mental Elf bandwaggon, in fact they sat right up there with the driver. Of course when the scamdemic
hit they were completely silent on what was being done to the Mental Elf of the nation and especially its children. But I guess when your children have a palace, acres of land, private tutors etc, and of course the Great Reset to promote Mental Elf can be put in the drawer until its fashionable again.

What a jerk.

Yes, that is my opinion and I can’t be bothered to substantiate it because I am off to enjoy a break.

Nothing obviously amiss with the mental health of the GP spotted this morning, plugging a top of the range BMW EV into the surgery charging point, which I now realise is located at the far end of the car park.

Nothing amiss either with the nurse who took the blood sample, who most likely drives one of the smaller older hatchbacks parked in the reserved area adjacent to the charging point.

Make of that what you will. Taking a blood sample remains a procedure that can’t be done remotely. Not even Elizabeth Holmes (of the Theranos multiparallel blood tester heist) dared propose that.

As for the first UK patient to die after testing positive for COVID-19, did the PoW inquire if she died of, died with or sadly died of something else not tested for at all? Upon such detail rests the credibility of The Pandemic That Never Was.

My daughter has a small Toyota. Much more sensible. Is it electric Porsche, a particularly stupid way of virtue signaling ones excess wealth? Is he getting free electricity from the NHS?

Perhaps his ideas simply show a certain lack of intellect? It is just as the Latin says, but more likely! Surely he cannot know nothing about nothing?

What gives this bloody half-wit the right to pronounce on the world of work when he’s never done a day in his life?

I think he just opens his mouth and a bad case of oral flatulence ensues. He’s just trying to ingratiate himself to people and it comes across shallow as hell. Using his same argument people such as the police, CSI, firefighters etc should all have ”mental health breaks” because they’re among the people who see some really gruesome and traumatic things on the regular. I was a nurse for years and it wasn’t remotely as bad as what some professions have to deal with. Hard work, yes, like tonnes of other jobs, but the most traumatic thing I dealt with was the odd exploding colostomy bag. No mental health break required.

Exactly, NHS staff don’t have the monopoly on hard work. They are not saints or angels, they are people doing a particular job or role. Many do it well but several do it badly. I know quite a few of the latter who loudly declare they work for the NHS in order to partake of every perk available yet treat their job – and patients – with disdain. Many also take full advantage of the generous sick pay scheme and are notoriously difficult to manage out by the few brave managers who attempt it.

All jobs come with pressures and stressors, it is not reserved just for NHS staff.

True. As I’m now ex-NHS I can say that I’m thoroughly disgusted with the organisation as a whole plus most of the staff. The scamdemic saw to that but there was none of the woke diversity crapola when I was there. It’s all gone completely mental in recent years and I’ve no idea what sort of person would wish to work for the NHS now. I used to be proud to be an employee, now I think they’re shameful, both from a management and an individual staff perspective. Many behaved disgustingly and everything we are taught in training about ethics and evidence-based practice went completely out the window, and everyone just went along with it like braindead muppets.
The only perk I got as an NHS employee was a reduced rate membership for David Lloyd. And you’re right. They need to not be pandered to and they need to cut out this “I’m a martyr” crap. There’s plenty of occupations ehere people work hard, if not harder, than most frontline staff in the NHS.

The POW needs to shut up with all the mental health nonsense. What does he know about real work? He’s just been pampered all his life and needs to man up.

agreed, all they need to do is turn up and cut a ribbon, ask,” and what do you do”, and wear some nice clothes and the odd military outfit. In return they get to have multi millions, live in stunning Palace’s, travel the world on private jets, wear beautiful clothes etc. All on the tax payers expense. Is it too much to ask that they keep their not of the real world opinions to themselves.
If they want to live a real life I am more than happy to swap places.

PoW is just encouraging NHS staff, and undoubtedly everyone else, to play the victim card (exactly as his obnoxious brother, and sister in law have).
Maybe he should be campaigning for a massive reduction in DEI posts and other pen pushers/bean counters in favour of more frontline NHS staff to reduce people’s workload.

It’s always the State Sector that needs it’s perceived needs met most, even though it is able to optimise its own service level and working conditions without any consideration for others, or the expense.

There’s also the likelihood that victimhood within the State Sector is what he is advised to promote, along with NET Zero policies.

If you don’t enjoy your job, or if you think you aren’t valued, go and work for someone else. I wonder how I manage to work 60 hours a week in my business and not get ‘burnt out’ well into my 60’s. At some point I guess I will take a career break, a very long one, when they stick me in my box.

PoW means well but he is totally deluded. Another member of the establishment with a privileged, protected, life and almost no real experience of being one of the masses. The issue we have in Britain is far too many claiming to be mentally sick due in large part to a present day culture and education system that has infantilised key skills such as resilience and perseverance. A society flooded with multiculturalism doesn’t help either as it serves to increase the complexity of human interaction and communication. Here, we have the PoW encouraging still more of the same. He is totally out of touch.

The Windsors are past their ‘use by date’ and need to be sent packing. Interpret packing as however deemed appropriate.

I see, he think that we should treat people that are not ill, and reduce resources further? I should refer him to Blackadder for correction! Just how would such an idea help the NHS with the backlogs caused by simple bad management in the first place? I imagine that the idea would appeal to the BMA, free holidays for all! Can anyone think of a more stupid leftie idea? The Royals should be careful, communist countries don’t have any.
