Car makers are rationing sales of petrol and hybrid vehicles in Britain to avoid hefty Net Zero fines, according to one of the country’s biggest dealership chains. The Telegraph has the story.
Robert Forrester, Chief Executive of Vertu Motors, said manufacturers were delaying deliveries of cars until next year amid fears they will otherwise breach quotas set for them by the Government.
This means someone ordering a car today at some dealerships will not receive it until February, he said.
At the same time, Mr. Forrester warned manufacturers and dealers were grappling with a glut of more expensive electric vehicles (EVs) that are “not easily finding homes”.
He said: “In some franchises there’s a restriction on supply of petrol cars and hybrid cars, which is actually where the demand is.
“It’s almost as if we can’t supply the cars that people want, but we’ve got plenty of the cars that maybe they don’t want.
“They [manufacturers] are trying to avoid the fines. So they’re constraining the ability for us to supply petrol cars in order to try and keep to the Government targets.”
The Chief Executive blamed the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, which requires at least 22% of cars sold by manufacturers to be electric from this year.
This target will gradually rise each year before reaching 80% in 2030, with manufacturers made to pay £15,000 for every petrol car that exceeds their quota – unless they have so-called carbon credits to spend.
But the scheme has prompted stark warnings from bosses at major brands, such as Vauxhall owner Stellantis and Ford, which have said they cannot sacrifice profits by selling EVs at large discounts indefinitely.
Instead, they have previously warned they may be forced to restrict petrol car supplies to artificially boost their ZEV mandate performance.
The warning from Vertu is the first confirmation that carmakers have now begun doing so….
Mr. Forrester said: “What the Government’s actually doing is constraining the new car market, which has a big impact on VAT receipts for them, and creates a business environment in the U.K. where manufacturers may question whether they want to make cars here.
“As Carlos Tavares [chief executive of Stellantis] has said, why should they sell cars at a loss because of U.K. Government policy?
“The new car market is no longer a market, unfortunately. It’s a state-imposed supply chain.”

Energy is not a free market anymore. Government is now dictating how we generate electricity, what heating we have, what car we drive (if any), how much aeroplanes we can travel in, even what food we eat. They decide everything, and that is what the climate policies are for. They have virtually nothing to do with the climate.
—-CO2 is the one gas that is directly tied to Industrial capitalism. Every human activity involves the release of some CO2 and controlling CO2 enables government to control every human activity, and that is exactly what they are doing. To understand why, you need to look to the UN Sustainable Development Agenda which seeks to control all of the world’s wealth, resources and YOU. —-Climate Change is simply the excuse used for this that most of the public fall for. But on closer inspection, the science (which is mostly speculations and assumptions put into computer models) does not fit with what is happening in the real world. There is no increase in the frequency or intensity of any type of weather event, and little in the way of warming, which is not at all unusual, and so claims of a “Climate Crisis” is POLITICS, and is not backed up by any science at all.
—The consolidated media are successfully keeping this phony “Climate Emergency” in the minds of the public, and sadly they mostly continue to fall for it.
Great comment, I hardly deign to say anything but anyway here goes; It does seem that very very slowly people are waking up to the climate/EV/Heat pump scam, you tube sites like ~Geoff Buys Cars;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PLeMB-BCEA
Are slowly but surely helping people to wake up to the scam and nonsense that is being inflicted on them. The fact that people are waking up to the net Zero mendacity seems to me to be a reason why we had such a Fascist Authoritarian response to the recent riots, TPTB can see that there will be an increasing public reaction against the totalitarian net-zero climate change scam and they want to be ready to stamp it out.
It makes me despair, there seems to me to be no reason why we could not all be living peacefully and happily in this best of all possible worlds and yet we have to have this inhuman nonsensical drivel inflicted on us.
Thanks Steve, and I sincerely hope there is an awakening. But I am not one to be complacent. I prefer to err on the side of caution until this climate tyranny is wiped out. ——I suspect I am hoping for the impossible.
Yes I watched the video——-I think you and I pretty much know what is happening with the climate change eco socialist scam
Try a little experiment of your own with 20 friends and family and see how many of them you feel are “awake” to the scam.
Here in Wales I’m seeing signs about No Farmers. No Food & Future. As I drove past one today I thought to myself there is one awake person, or at least partially awake.
Great analysis again. At a slight tangent all the fear porn we are constantly being fed about monkey pox, bird flu and all the rest is about dictating health policy. Globalists really do want to control everything.
People hear the words “Sustainable Development” and must think to themselves “Well that sounds like a good thing”——Except once they realise that it actually means a world run by technocrats they never heard of in line with the UN/WEF world view which amounts to One World Communist Governance, they might actually think “Eh, wait a minute”
I think you’ve Nailed it !

Nothing is a free market. Everything we buy is regulated and taxed.
Free market = Voluntary exchange wherein parties to the exchange exclusively decide and agree the terms and condition of the exchange.
Even leaving aside various taxes, the ‘free market’ is so regulated and distorted with protectionism, subsidies, government edicts and tax breaks it is not free by any degree.
Great examples are housing and medical care.
This demonstrates the stupidity of leasing.
Ignoring the high cost for something you don’t own the vehicle has to go back at the end of the term.
Most haven’t been thinking what they will do if there isn’t a car available to buy.
I’ve said for a long time it’s when lease cars need returning but can’t be replaced that many will finally start paying attention to what’s coming
I understand that the lease costs for EV’s are climbing steeply and fast, the lease industry has played an important role in feeding cars into the secondhand market, as you say, as this system breaks down the effect will be dramatic.
Lease companies/car rental companies are in effect second-hand car dealers.
The model is, buy in quantity direct from manufacturer new with large discounts, use lease or rental revenue to cover overheads, maintenance/repair and make some contribution to earnings, then sell the vehicles within after 12 to 36 months and relatively low mileage, and collect the difference between initial buying price and second-hand selling price.
The problem with BEVs is they were high price to start with, but as it has turned out, second-hand values have fallen really low. Subsidies are being withdrawn – the standard lease/rental model isn’t working, and doesn’t look as it will work.
Leasing avoids capital outlay – that some don’t have – particularly if you are a business with multiple vehicles, it avoids opportunity cost of investing that capital in a vehicle, it avoids the loss of capital through depreciation, at the end of the lease it’s easy to get rid of the vehicle, the opportunity to pay the residual at lease end to buy the car exists.
What is stupid about that?
So the UK is now a Command Economy…
Good those always end so well.
What is the situation with gray imports?
Government control registrations through DVLA, so will restrict that I’m sure
There will be no electric cars within 3 years I am sure of that. Even if the country moved to a command economy, which is impossible because it requires a level of enthusiasm from the people to get it off the ground – the whole technology is based on several unsustainable models it is simply impossible. The elite know when cataclysms are coming and given that the game is to keep people distracted as long as possible, it is likely that they know that something is going to happen very shortly. They are making preparatins for this with armoured redouts in New Zealand and the south Pacific and sometimes keeping open the option of a life on the high seas. Even working class people in Russia are preparing for a major pole shift. You are being kept blind until the last minute that is what they want.
Limiting the amount of ICE cars was designed to cause delay to deliveries. That is the government’s plan. Manufacturers will be forced to reduce demand by inflating their price and use the money to subsidise the disliked EVs. This is the clown world we live in.
So I am wondering…
What is the best timing for the upgrade if my petrol car!
Or will they start closing all petrol stations by that time….
The new car market is no longer a market, unfortunately. It’s a state-imposed supply chain.
Which is why a corresponding response from car manufacturers, parts’ suppliers and car dealers is long overdue. If you do not want to be out of work in the near future, you need to strongly complain to the government. You are a massive and important industry. The government will listen to you and be sensitive of how you may sway public opinion, and there is nothing more important to a politician than public opinion.
Absolutely right. The pushback on this Net Zero nonsense is frankly pathetic; from the public, the manufacturers, the media. Our Car Industry, steel industry, Gas and Oil industry just take it on the chin. The apathy of the industry leaders, the workers, is mind numbing.
we appear to be a nation of brainwashed fools. Naive, gullible and ripe for totalitarian globalist government. I am beginning to wonder if the WEF description of the citizens is correct. “Useless eaters”. Our children are heading full speed towards slavery.
Above all, the MSM deserves the most contempt for abdicating
their responsibility for giving us the truth and integrity. Bought and paid for shills.
The last three new petrol cars I bought between 2015 and 2022 (two in France, the last in the UK) took six months to deliver. So order now for February seems about right in my experience.
What will stop motorists or dealer or some other third party just ordering RHD cars from the Continent – doesn’t this already happen?
UK registration process restrictions I imagine…
