The U.K. lockdowns cost more lives than they saved and must not happen again, scientists have told MPs.
The comments came at the latest meeting of the Pandemic Recovery APPG, a group of MPs and Peers from across the political spectrum united by their aim to find new pandemic solutions which prevent avoidable suffering and loss. Chaired by Labour MP Graham Stringer, the group listened to evidence on whether lockdowns were an effective or ethical public health measure.
All the experts voiced serious concerns about the catastrophic damage lockdowns have done to society and the untested departure they represented from previous public health policy.
Dr. Mark Woolhouse, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh and author of The Year The World Went Mad, opened the expert testimony:
I never imagined that in early 2020 we would come up with a public health intervention that risked causing even more damage than the disease. Were lives saved during the lockdowns? Yes, but it is not widely known that most of the people who died in the first wave got infected during lockdown. We should have put far more effort into protecting those people and those around them – lockdown didn’t save them. At the same time, we should have dropped the least effective measures much more quickly than we did and avoided the second and third lockdowns entirely.
There are lessons to be learnt here: if your pandemic response plan involves anything as damaging as lockdown you need to plan in advance to deal with the collateral harms too. It was difficult to have a proper debate about the pros and cons of lockdown in the frenzied atmosphere of March 2020 but we must have that debate now if we are to avoid such a harmful policy in future pandemics. If we’d taken a more balanced approach in 2020 we could have saved many lives and largely kept out of lockdown too. That is why I wrote my book, to elucidate the damage to people’s lives, to education, to the economy, and to health thanks to people being told to stay away from the NHS. Lockdowns were not a proportionate or sustainable intervention and the forthcoming inquiry needs to take a critical view of their role.
Speaking about the ethics of lockdown, Dr. Philip Thomas, Professor of Risk Management at Bristol University, said:
My field is risk management and, when I look at the use of lockdown, it strikes me that the Government didn’t give enough consideration to the collateral damage such a wide-ranging measure would cause to the economy, perhaps not realising the likely size of the knock-on, adverse effects on people’s health and life expectancy. Vast sums of money were spent to reduce the risk of Covid using lockdowns but, in its efforts to save one group of people from harm, the Government may have exposed others to even greater damage. We have to realise that the trade-off is not between lives and money, but lives versus lives.
The Government and its advisers do not seem to have recognised the extent of the downside risks before implementing a public health intervention that had never before been used on such a scale. In addition, the modelling upon which the lockdowns were decided could not be relied on, when models could, in fact, have given very good insights, something I have demonstrated with judging risk using the J-value. The pandemic could have been managed differently.
Chairing the meeting, MP Graham Stringer said:
I have made no secret of my concerns about the Government’s handling of the pandemic from the outset but hearing what our speakers have said, I fear that these repeated lockdowns will go down as one of the worst public health measures ever undertaken. Hindsight is a great thing, but it is clear that the decision making process that led to repeated lockdowns was seriously flawed. There was inadequate consideration of the policies and all the available evidence, let alone any risk assessment to protect against doing more harm than good.
We have heard compelling evidence from Professor Philip Thomas, whose comprehensive analysis suggests that the net effect of U.K. COVID-19 restrictions has actually increased the loss of life. I hope the use of lockdowns and all their ramifications is something that the U.K. COVID-19 Inquiry will not shy away from very closely and critically scrutinising. It cannot be allowed to happen again.
Entrepreneur and philanthropist Luke Johnson, talking about the economic devastation, said:
Lockdown was a disproportionate, discriminatory and imprecise intervention which has caused immense harm to society and the economy, in particular the hospitality industry. There were no studies or papers to demonstrate that such measures were effective. Instead, it is now clearer than ever that lockdowns were counterproductive. Why did we not focus protection on those we knew were at highest risk? The Government and its advisers simply decided to unilaterally shut down the whole of society on the basis of no scientific evidence and no understanding of the consequences.
Many businesses suffered. Jobs have been lost, lives have been destroyed. These things do not happen in a vacuum. The advisers and ministers who championed repeated lockdowns have not had to put their careers on the line. No cost benefit analysis has ever been done and not one of those affected has been included in the decision making. The victims of lockdown did not seem to matter, whether economic or health. All that mattered was the public appearance of SAGE’s and the Government’s response to Covid. I hope what I said here will hit home and these mistakes will never be repeated.
The group heard lastly from Nick Stokes, a former NHS trust Chairman, whose wife of 46 years, Joy Stokes, died of cancer that went undiagnosed due to NHS COVID-19 restrictions imposed by lockdown:
Joy was the life and soul and the love of my life. She had recovered from breast cancer following a mastectomy and nine months of chemotherapy. She bounced back, playing golf, seeing friends and busy with life. Her last mammogram was clear but at the start of lockdown she was getting pain in her hip which by October became severe. Her doctor did not want to know and dismissed it as arthritis.
We tried to access a physio though we could not see one in person. None of the treatments were helping. The private physio we tried wrote to our doctors to say Joy needed an X-ray or a scan but we continued to be given the run around until it was too late. By the time Joy got to hospital, the cancer had spread into her bones and then her brain. I talked to the oncology team after she died and they were sure, had she been seen and referred earlier they would have been able to control it and Joy would most likely still be here.
Vice Chair of the APPG Sammy Wilson MP said:
The impact of lockdowns on countless lives has been and continues to be devastating. It is clear that lockdown was an ill-thought out and ill-advised policy which should have never been deployed. One of the awful knock-on effects was to effectively shut down access to healthcare for all non-Covid treatment and we heard the tragic outcome of that in the harrowing testimony from Nick Stokes.
We also heard about the economic devastation from Luke Johnson and the very real impact that has had on people. Lives and livelihoods have been lost, and will continue to be, as a direct result of lockdowns. The U.K. COVID-19 Inquiry must ask the question: why did we lockdown, not once but three times?

While it is very likely true that lockdown was not the best policy response to the first wave, it was an understandable reaction to the presence of a new virus that many feared was an artificial pathogen that would kill more than 1% of those exposed.
The scandal here is the suppression and vilification of actors that raised contradictory opinions: the authors of The Great Barrington Declaration; the proponents of lab leak theory; the voices saying that vaccines would not suppress virus spread, that lockdown was not associated with a reduced overall death rate, that the virus would naturally become more infectious but less deadly, that school closure would cause more harm than good and that rudimentary cloth and paper masks were unlikely to reduce viral spread.
The censorship (or resulting self-censorship) caused by the actions of OFCOM, newspaper regulators, and social media owners is very concerning.
I have lost count of the number of YouTubers who announced they were leaving the platform because of this issue. In the main, their warnings have turned out to be broadly correct. Ivor Cummings and Professor Sunetra Gupta are good examples of such suppressed voices.
Shame.
No shit, Sherlock.
My comment on World Health Assembly’s Treaty on Pandemic Preparedness has been censored try this reference to it.
I think most people will be alarmed if they are allowed to learn about it.
I am a little surprised that no-one has mentioned The World Health Assembly and the Pandemic Preparedness Treaty that they hope/expect to see approved in 2024.
Under the treaty they will declare Pandemics impose lockdowns ban drugs approve others etc etc and their directives will over-ride national governments in 199 countries.
Something to look forward to.
Tell me it won’t come about..

So are Whitty, Vallance, the BBC, etc goi g to be prosecuted, loose jobs, be pu itself fined? Are Johnson, Hancock etc going to be fired? Is anyone going to be made tp PAY for what millions of us knew? Who is going to apologise for the lives ruined in so many ways? U til there is retribution it’s all useless wordplay
Perhaps if they were being honest they’d have added: ”So in future we’ll ensure that everyone has a quacksine whether they like it or not”.
This really does annoy and infuriate me beyond belief. They KNEW in Feb 2020 that this was not a significant disease and was impacting mostly those who were old and frail anyway thus enabling targeted protection. They HAD a pandemic plan based upon a respiratory disease theoretically far worse than this virus and yet they scared people to death (literally in the case of one of my closest friends), neglected people who needed ongoing care and treatment (my mother who sadly passed away in Dec 2020) and decimated lives – mine. They caused me cancer, a major operation to remove and now have a life long disability and am struggling to get my business back up and running.
I cannot forgive and I shall never forget. I will not sleep easy at night until the truth comes out and they are held to account. My fear is that this will be swept under the carpet like the last time the WHO and pharma tried it on – Swine Flu
And STILL the madness persists as determinedly as ever in our professional and knowledgeable (protect the) NHS medical institutions, As THEY continue with their ridiculous enforcement of the wearing of surgical splashguard attire for all patients.
Not to mention the refusal of an MRI scan to the unstabbed. Yes thats right, happened to a friends daughter last weekend at the Mayday Hospital AKA The Croydon University Hospital.
No jab no scan!
At what point will these same scientists acknowledge the severe adverse events and deaths caused by these experimental biologicals which are not only unsafe, but also ineffective. We now know Pfizer knew, from their trial data, more died who were injected with the experimental biological than those who received a placebo. Also there are six pages of adverse events, many of them severe in nature. Why didn’t they share this information with the health authorities who issued the Emergency Use Authorisations. Or did they? If so, that would make matters much worse.
Y’all should have asked us 18 months ago. Now get on with repealing the legislation that allowed it to happen.
We are governed by people with no common sense, who cannot create anything other than chaos. These people go to university from school, then into politics abd government without any experience of real life or jobs in the private sector.
You seem to be suggesting that they’re all incompetent, and this happened accidentally because of that incompetence. Sort of lets them off the hook somewhat, because they must all be too stupid to understand the harm they do.
No suggestion of it being actually done deliberately, then?
…and the unnecessary deaths may well continue as people are forced into poverty as a result of lockdown and other government policies.
This was always a pandemic of so called experts, most of who had never treated a patient but now had celebrity status. It was never a pandemic for children but yet today this group who have lost so much are being urged to have an experimental mRNA vaccine which is so poor in adults that Pfizer is suggesting a new version.
This is madness, we should not have Knighted Whitty et al but suspended them from practice ,prior to investigation.
I believe the headline should read “The U.K. lockdowns cost more lives than they saved and this responsible should be held to account”. Their accountability should not cease at ethical considerations but should extend to criminal as well. All those involved in causing unnecessary and additional deaths and harm through lockdown policy advice were reasonably expected to conduct due diligence. They did not. Instead of rewarding people like Whitty with gongs, they should be struck off and investigated for criminal negligence. At the very least, these disgraced and shameless people like Ferguson should never work in their industries and professions again. If I had an employee as inept as they have proven themselves to be they would be disciplined and removed from employment.
”Inept”? Really? Not just deliberately and wickedly duplicitous because it was made worth their while?
5G. Where did it first get rolled out? Wuhan.
Didn’t a certain Mr Trump say “let’s not have the cure be worse than the disease”. I believe he was ridiculed and sneered at, Disgraceful.
Too much time spent analysing efficacy of lockdowns, cases, deaths, vaccines etc instead of looking at the bigger picture and true goals. Lockdowns were never about saving lives and a virus. They were to convince people and to get them running for the weapon in the arm and partly to get the ball rolling and provide a cover for the collapse and chaos we are now about to experience.
‘I fear that these repeated lockdowns will go down as one of the worst public health measures ever undertaken.’
They will also go down as incredibly lucrative the ruling class, their pharma chums, track and trace chum, testing chums etc so will be used again.
Dr Woolhouse wrote a book to “elucidate” (about) the damage to people’s lives…wise after so many on this and other forums had “elucidated” months ago and way back into 2020. Maybe Dr Woolhouse has followed the discussions and many valuable links given btl. …in fact, there is a book written in these comments since April 2020. A ‘book’ written by people rather than an ‘expert’ ……the analysis within such a book to be forensically “elucidated” and compassionately conveyed.
He did indeed. I bought a copy of it, and scribbled down some comments.
pages 2 & 3
pages 4 & 5
So those are my comments on it.
Very interesting to read your comments!
Another thing we conspiracy theorists have correctly predicted! We are so good at this!
MPs tell scientists, f you, we’ve got bribes to collect and vaccines to shift.
“The U.K. COVID-19 Inquiry must ask the question: why did we lockdown, not once but three times”
Because the government and the advisors they chose are all a-holes.
Not one, not one of these useless pos have had to suffer the consequences of what they inflicted on the rest of us.
Boris spent most of the time doing coke at no.10 interspersed with getting blowies off of hookers in the gardens.
The one thing that strikes me is that no one seems to KNOW how respiratory diseases spread.
There are lots of people with theories, and simplistic assumptions that particles cannot travel 2 yards/20 yards/2 miles – but I do not think anyone has set up experiments to determine precisely how respiratory viruses travel between humans.
You would think that this would be an essential first step in determining what kinds of countermeasures are appropriate?
Unless they know that there is no such thing and revealing that would put a serious dent in the vaccine interests.
How come some of us on here knew all this in March 2020 and yet Scientists didn’t? Well, some did, but they were excluded because their views didn’t fit the narrative.
Anyone who has read about the underlying issues knows that lockdowns were planned at least 10 years before 2020 and were used in a war game that was eerily Covid like only weeks before. Lockdowns were going to be used regardless of whether they worked and that was why Barrington, Heneghan et al were dismissed and pilloried.
Those who were responsible for those decisions must face trial. There are no two ways about that; they effectively committed manslaughter. Imagine how many people will die because they do not get diagnosed in time. How many died because they were refused treatment.
How many bumped themselves off!
You mean by The Rockefeller Foundation, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and George Soros and his Open Society. Isn’t it funny how Saint Floyd, BLM, wokery and mass illegal migration all blew up at the same time.
Stringer was, along with the rest of Labour, Gung Hoe for lockdowns. Now we have the politics! Boris wouldn’t have got away with it without Starmer, Krankie and whoever is supposed to be leading the old LibDems(Tories are the new LibDems).
I honestly don’t know how some of them have the damn nerve. It’s what the rest of us were saying two years ago (otherwise this site wouldn’t exist, apart from anything else). RIP Joy Stokes.
Has this been reported anywhere in the MSM? Unlikely i fear, which will ensure that the poor brainwashed masses will not question what has happened but just be grateful that ‘it’s over now, we just have to turn up for another jab in a few months time and we can go on holiday’. Not looking at all the collateral damage, I’m afraid they never will now.
Ah yes, but are they flying to their holiday destinations?
If they are, they should be aware that their carrier is almost certainly breaking the law regarding the use of pilots who are taking part in a medical trial.
This is, of course, the least of their problems if their pilot suffers a stroke or heart attack while flying their plane.
Rather fortunate for the likes of Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Johnson that the Black Boxes won’t reveal whether the pilot lost control through medical emergency.
Anyone know whether we in the UK/EU have the same legal underpinning to govern the enrolment of active pilots in medical trials (where the placebo arm is non-existent?)?
Excellent point brachipod. Knowing the EU and their love of meddlesome regulations they are bound to have some kind of regulation covering what you describe,
Black boxes record voices in the cockpit too, so the noise of a pilot gasping and groaning and his mate asking what’s up will be there. The other pilot will be able to fly and land. However, it would still be recorded as a flight incident and should be investigated by the AAIB.
Am I missing something here?
Where was the castigation of SAGE et alia because they tore up the very recently decided WHO 2019 Pandemic advice that had been deliberated for years and years and was based on the collective experience of the last century?
Was the WHO advice wrong? In any material way?
And why no mention here among these committee members of the malign influence of the likes of Gates – who bankrolls WHO and many medicines regulatory bodies and universities around the world – and Fauci (of whom no more needs to be said if you read Robert Kennedy Jr’s book on his record starting with his obsession with HIV)?
If this committee fails to dig into who changed the course of how we deal with disease, to the detriment of millions of individual patients, because they have a religious belief in a ‘germ theory pill for every ill’ that takes no account of the patient’s ‘terrain’, then it will have been a near complete waste of time.
“Whitewash in Whitehall” – the longest running political farce of all time!
Including “the Rat Trap” (which describes how a whole gullible population submitted itself to ongoing experimental lab tests without asking a single relevant question )
“Whitewash in Whitehall” sounds like an album that The Clash or Sham69 should’ve recorded…
…and ‘Rat Trap’ just goes to show how prescient Bob Geldoff was way back in 1978.
How Fauci isn’t already behind bars beggars all human belief.
It appears that MPs are now totally irrelevant and will simply vote how they are directed – with the exception of a noble band of around 100, mostly ‘old school’ decent Tories .
So Johnson will do what he is told by his masters blaming the “science”.etc
Our big worry now must surely be whether he will be told to follow Ursula Von Der Leyen into the abyss of forced ‘vaccinations’ for all, imposed digital currency and QR codes for everything , the exclusion of the “unvaxxed” ( fully vaxxed that is – we are at four jabs now with more promised!) from society a Vax/Digital/Green pass and the abolition of money.
This is the reported news coming out of Brussels after a stealthy under the radar move by UVDL and her Globalist Banker allies
After his ‘fake’ Brexit and the abandonment of Northern Ireland to Brussels, if Johnson follows suit under his minders’ pressure it means the end of our independent financial life, bodily autonomy, personal liberties and human rights as we have known them for centuries from Magna Carta through to the 1688/9 ‘Bill of Rights’. In deciding he will have the help of his ne’ Bill of… Read more »
