Carbon Brief, the Green Blob funded climate propaganda outfit, has claimed that wind and solar power have saved the UK from gas imports worth £5.9 billion during the Hormuz crisis.
My first reaction is – so what?
It might just as well have said ‘it’s Tuesday today’!
In isolation, its statement is meaningless. But, of course, we can guess that its real intention is to make us believe we are £5.9 billion better off as a result of wind and solar power.
In reality though, its own figures are a damning indictment of renewable energy. They confirm that even at the current high price of gas, gas power is still cheaper than renewable energy.
Let’s delve into the numbers. This is what Carbon Brief says:
The UK has avoided the need for gas imports worth £5.9 billion since the start of the Hormuz crisis as a result of record generation from wind and solar, reveals Carbon Brief analysis.
While gas prices are surging to levels not seen since the 2022 energy crisis, the UK has been generating record amounts of power from wind and solar, up 14% year-on-year.
This unprecedented clean-power generation is directly cutting the need for gas-fired electricity, which is down by nearly 10% year-on-year in 2026 to date.
In total, wind and solar have generated a record 41% share of the UK’s electricity needs in 2026 to date, compared with 25% from gas, according to Carbon Brief’s analysis.

In winter our gas bill is much higher than our electricity bill. A big chunk of the notional VAT saving on electricity is gobbled up by the higher VAT we pay on the gas that’s now 39% higher than in April.
Left pocket, right pocket.
Yes, the energy expended spouting lies and nonsense is several orders of magnitude lower than the energy required to refute it…
Excellent and detailed research 👌
And on top of all that the UK only imports up to 12% of all its energy types through the straits of Hormuz!
