You could make a great movie set in an illegal migrant dinghy. There’s high drama occurring in them all the time. In some boats, the female passengers get raped by the male ones. In others, the Muslim passengers throw the Christian ones overboard. In yet others, it is on-board ‘witches’ who are made to walk the plank; in 2025, Spanish police arrested 19 migrants from West Africa for torturing and drowning 50 fellow passengers, after encountering ‘magical’ engine-failures and storms at sea. You can view footage of Senegalese incomers advising upon how best to spot a witch: apparently they have “big heads” and can see in the dark due to their huge eyes. Frank Sidebottom would be in danger, then.
Alfred Hitchcock once made an effective thriller entirely set within a lifeboat, called, simply enough, Lifeboat. So, with sensational material like the above to work with, contemporary directors should easily be able to follow suit. Except, of course, to do so would by definition involve depicting invading boat-people as killers, rapists, jihadists and primitive-minded witch-hunters. This would never do. Instead, we now have a much more positive movie set in a migrant dinghy being released, and I have just been allowed to watch a pre-release preview of it.
Don’t rock the boat
The movie is called Rule, Britannia and, like the average marine lifespan of a Christian witch hurled into the mid-Mediterranean, it is only 12 minutes long. Intended mainly for the film-
