Jaguar is to cut 4,000 jobs in the UK, according to the BBC:
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is to cut 4,000 jobs as the carmaker struggles with Chinese competition, US tariffs and the transition to electric vehicles.
The cuts will happen over the next two years and will mostly affect the head office, which is based in the UK.
Chief Executive P.B. Balaji said the firm was “committed to supporting everyone with care, fairness and respect” through the redundancy process. The automotive industry faces significant challenges, with technological change amidst intense competition and ongoing geo-political uncertainty.”
JLR is hoping to achieve the cuts through voluntary redundancy, with a window open until October 4th, but said it would make compulsory redundancies with less generous terms if necessary. Affected staff will receive an email in the coming days.
The redundancies are being made in an attempt to save £1.7 billion over the next two years.
JLR has blamed Brexit, Trump and China, but the real culprits are closer to home.
It was a different story five years ago, when the BBC reported:
Jaguar Land Rover’s Jaguar brand will be all-electric by 2025, the carmaker has said.
The company will launch electric models of its entire Jaguar and Land Rover line-up by 2030, it added. The company plans to spend about £2.5 billion a year on new technology for its cars.
This is a big move for Jaguar Land Rover, but the reality is it

Silly sods! The Managed decline of one of the last of British iconic brands funnily enough by an Indian company. Great isn’t it!
JKR blames Brexit, trump, and the boogeyman. How about blaming yourselves?
“That advert” did more to destroy Jaguar cars than even the EV coercion has managed.
Do they really think a bunch of trans-wierdos prancing around and making absolute fools of themselves appeals to anyone other than another bunch of wierdos?
Well, apparently they were so delusional that they thought that the buying public would agree with them. It really ought to beggar belief.
VW is in the same predicament. Having just ceased production of the highly successful mid engine ICE Boxter/Cayman sports car the replacement EV is now in abeyance as their realise no one wants to buy a sports car without a real engine.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said the announcement was “a huge step for British car manufacturing”. Yes, a step over the precipice into the pit of bankrupcy.
Marketing departments are there specifically to determine the market condition including consumer preferences, competition, pricing, political, regulatory, economic situation BEFORE deciding to invest in a new product. Post-launch it assesses feedback from the market to decide whether the product has a future or should not get further investment and be discontinued.
Any product that over a range of features compares unfavourably with the market dominating competition, is twice the price, has none of the benefits and can only achieve market share with taxpayer funded subsidies and Government mandates to eliminate the competition is not viable.
A blind man on a galloping horse could see that. Yet all the car-makers missed it.
Had these companies done their marketing, they would not have lost their shirts.
The quality of management – all those bright young things fresh from uni – is very, very poor.
Trouble is all the senior management at the car companies wanted to get a little gold star from the ‘powers that be’ in recognition of their extra hard worshipping to the net zero gods – it seems not one of them to a man (or woman) thought… ‘hang on a minute a) this is total bollox and b) this will totally destroy our successful business, I’d better find my balls and speak up’…
So they really deserve what they get – sadly 99% of the employees had nowt to do with it, and are collateral damage…
I’m kind of surprised Jaguar have 4000 employees to make redundant.
They haven’t made a car since 2024 – that’s 2 years without manufacturing cars.
What the hell were these 4000 people up to?
Office staff and layers of management ensuring DEI and climate change compliance probably.
DEI and lauding LGBTQ+ for a car that is and has been a mans car (pink, who would have thought that was a good idea?) and laughable IT system security, especially the latter, are what did for JLR. Two fingers to your main market, then you are out of it. Bud Light, Nike, JLR, the list will be many before company boards wake up to this.
Or is this part of a bigger plan and its being done by design?
Indeed. It’s as if Heckler and Koch would shift to expensive knitted handbags.
The only decent pink car was Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward’s Roller. And that’s only because it had guns
Hear, hear!
Anybody looking at the pink woke concept car suspected something had gone seriously wrong at Jaguar.
That advert must have been approved by top management. What does that say about their mindset?
The real culprit is successive governments that allowed Indian Billionaires to buy up key British companies like British Steel and Jaguar Land Rover, copy their technology (called Industrial Espionage in the old days), build REPLICA FACTORIES IN INDIA, force British staff to train their Indian replacements, and once the replica factories were up & running in India, they put on long faces, shaking their heads solemnly to declare that they were shutting down production in Britain and sacking British workers, and it was all the fault of “China”, or “Global Warming”, or some other pathetic excuse.
It’s called “Asset-Stripping the British Isles”.
And the “unions” played their part.
And the workers didn’t understand (and still don’t) the simple power of removing their labour, and they didn’t demand better from their union overlords.
Sorry, but everyone is to blame…
No, “everyone” is NOT to blame !!!
Quite. I protest my innocence.
If I had put the word “everyone” in inverted commas, that would indeed have been closer to my meaning.
I know it’s not my fault 😎
Because the British car industry did so well in yesteryear when it was British-owned BMLC.
Good point. Everything from BMLC (“one of the largest automotive groups in the world, briefly the second biggest outside the U.S.”) to Harrier Jump Jets to Hovercraft to British Steel to Concorde to Raleigh Bicycles to all of Britain’s supermarkets, to name but a few examples, has been sold off to foreigners, and now even the British Prime Minister has handed over the very blueprints of British Storm Shadow long-range missiles to the Nasty Foreign Porn Star Dictator responsible for helping Tiny Tatar Putin slaughter millions of Slavs on both sides of the Meatgrinder War, and they’re just itching to drag the British Armed Forces into it. Does this mean we’ll soon have to buy the missiles from the Porn Star?
“Even Associated British Ports, which manages many UK ports, is owned by the Singapore foreign reserve fund and Kuwait’s sovereign wealth fund and registered offshore in Jersey. The BBC estimates that there are currently no less than 97,000 properties owned by foreign firms in England and Wales.”
(And that quote is from nearly ten years ago!!!)
Who owns Britain? – New thinking for the British economy
Nothing to do with a woke, disastrous rebrand then when they abandoned about 100 years of brand equity, recognition and heritage.

Grandad used to wash cars with 2 mates at Blackpool 1920, at Brown and Mallielieu.
One, Frank Taylor, borrowed £500 to build a couple of houses. The other, Bill Lyons, was doing an engineering apprenticeship and wanted to build sidecars.
Taylor went on to found Taylor Woodrow. Lyons started Swallow Sidecars on Cocker St, evolving into SS Jaguar, and a knighthood.
Grandad was a radio pioneer, an initial BBC shareholder and invented the world’s first valve tester and wind up torch.
Probably slave traders
😉
Seriously, wow. The spirit of invention, endeavour… where has it gone, huh.
What do you get up to?
Thanks. Defence aerospace, now a has been …
Asking customers what they would like is a manifestation of nasty, evil, wasteful, destructive, elitist, exclusive capitalism. Customers need to understand that those in authority over them know better. The excellent management at Jaguar understood this, but were thwarted in their desire to follow instructions and do-the-right-thing by the idiot customers. A bad day indeed for the planet, the baby seals, our children and grandchildren, the Great Barrier Reef and everything.
This is sarcasm.
Through pandering to net zero, diversity and gross mismanagement Jaguar is almost dead. Limping on with little purpose. Similar to the way in which successive governments have brought our country to its current state.
Good riddance. Let it die. Let all of the woke/joke firms die. Actions, consequences and all that.
But why should 10,000s of skilled workers (inc supply chains) lose their jobs because of a few woke managers who exist in a groupthink bubble?
Fair comment but if the unions had cared for workers instead of chasing the latest woke ideas perhaps they could have had a steadying influence.
You dreamer, you. Unions, care for workers?! Get away, stop yanking our chains.
You dreamer, you. “Unions”, care for workers?! Get away, stop yanking our chains.
Unions do not represent workers any more, they are a kind of charity for the union bosses, who wax lyrical abut workers rights whilst stealing and wasting all the funds paid in by said workers.
Its higher up that a few woke managers. An acquaintance of my was CEO of Unilever, he tried to steer it in the woke direction trying it on a few brands like Ben and Jerry’s letting the original owners (who are still involved have more say about woke issues ProPal etc) Fortunately for them Unilever they rumbled it and he was rotated out. No loss to him, payout retirement and now travels the world on his motorcycles taking in World Cups etc along the way etc.
Sad to see what was a great company dismantled a piece at a time, by increasingly crap management chasing the latest thing…
The capitalist free market process operating just as it should – “as if guided by an invisible hand” – punishes the stupid, gets rid of the failures and mis-allocation of resources.
It’s lovely to see.
It’s just a shame the management didn’t share your perceptiveness. They might have changed course before ending up in their current dead end.
I think that should have been ‘management’, since what it managed wasn’t what was intended.
A bunch of random folk off the street could not have managed things worse.
As usual, the clowns who caused the problem will get nice retirement packages, while the wage slaves will get redundancy. Let’s hope the workers find other outlets for their skills.
They were given government quotas to fill. Not a free market with socialist governments including the red Conservatives
Capitalism always wins in the end, because, like truth, it needs no maintenance, as it supports itself.
It’s the periods in between which are the damaging times. They usually end with people having sense beaten into them, sometimes literally…
Anybody wanting a car looking like that would need their head examined. It is also wholly unsuitable for our roads with extra low profile tyres and very low ground clearance. And what is the asking price?
It’s a concept.
Does that mean they spent money on a design which puts off customers but which won’t be built.
Yes, and which destroys the business, too. It’s a genuine marvel.
It’s a conceptually flawed concept.
Well done for pointing out what few others have noticed: the stealthy, widespread lowering of ground clearance, and ridiculously tiny tyres, that seem designed to cause maximum damage to the car, the occupants, and anyone unlucky enough to be run over by it. In the old days, and with high ground clearance vehicles, it was possible for humans & animals to survive being run over by them, and for the vehicle to easily clear any bumps in the road.
The low ground clearance is because the battery pack is under the car below the cabin floor.
Ready to scrape against something, and write the car off….
Yes, just look at that thing! It wouldn’t last two seconds on a road full of Traditional British Potholes, or the raised grassy bit in the middle of a farm track.
And just what you need in an area such as the Somerset Levels which floods regularly. A large petrol driven car, with a cautious/sensible driver can slowly go through floodwater. Try it with an EV and it’s a write-off.
