According to the Telegraph, a hacker or hackers unknown, but probably of Iranian identity, recently hacked a generator of some unspecified type, likely in retaliation for Britain’s role in supporting US and Israeli forces. Well, maybe, maybe not. The only way the identities of those responsible can be known is if they identified themselves. Fortunately, the group most responsible for undermining Britain’s electricity capacity is very easy to identify for that reason. They are very proud of themselves.
It is not known which generator was targeted by the suspected hackers, nor how big it is. All that is said by the Telegraph is that the target was small, and the attack made no difference to the security of the grid’s supply. Yet the story made the paper’s front page, along with stories about Russian, Chinese and North Korean hacking teams, which make daily assaults on our infrastructure, that are fought off by security services – namely and mostly the National Cyber Security Centre, a branch of GCHQ.
One problem with such claims is that little of the truth of this stuff can be established. The cyber war is foggier than any conventional conflict. There are of course hackers, and most of them are indeed malicious (the alternative being ‘ethical hackers’, who probe cybersecurity measures for weaknesses in order to develop better defences). Bad actors might just as likely have assumed traceable identities as unwittingly leave clues exposed for analysts to discover. The origin of attackers and their motivations are just speculation,

Never forget: Sun Tsu’s first art of war:“The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.”
That is exactly what is happening as Western governments pursue self-harming Green Energy policies.
There is no better way to damage Western societies than by rendering their power supplies unreliable and expensive.
So the adoption of Green agendas by Western Nations can only be seen as a very successful continuation of the Cold War undermining Western Societies.

On the other hand, if the Russians get a bit more grumpy about the British missiles and drones launched from Ukraine and blowing up their refineries and Amazon warehouses, they might use their hypersonic missiles or drones to demolish UK gas import facilities and the Norwegian pipeline, which would make things quite difficult. Even a threat to LNG ships would halt imports. But of course the EU would keep up the missing electricity and petrol supplies wouldn’t they?
Mr. Pile, normally I totally agree with everything you say, I think though you may have this figure ‘By 2025, there was 52 GW of firm generation capacity, and 22 GW of variable supply.’ incorrect – is there not around 30GW of wind and 23GW or thereabouts, of solar? Rather than 22GW variable, is it not 52/53? I may be reading it incorrectly or misunderstanding‘
The difference is Capacity vs Generation. So there may be 30GW of wind capacity, but considerably less generation (depending on the weather).
An excellent article that leaves me filled with despair.
The contrast with Trump’s America could not be more stark.
As bad as it is today, we know today that it will be much worse in 5 years.
The US is building power stations and Data centres today, 400 under construction and 1500+ in development.
The US is being positioned for long-term domination and we are on the road to serfdom.

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”
― Taylor Caldwell, A Pillar of Iron
Ben is absolutely correct and has been since before I started following his articles and missives.
I can’t see an immediate way out of this, but the answer is not more of the Uniparty. Are there enough British voters who understand the situation we find ourselves in regarding energy generation and industrial capabilities? If not then most of the other questions around politics are moot.
As an engineer I despair of the people who have been allowed to be in charge, but it was ever thus with management that don’t understand the technology and refuse to accept that the laws of physics are absolute and inviolable.
Since it is certain that if the Ruinables fiasco continues and they replace dependable, spinning generation more and more, we shall have blackouts.
What better than to blame these on foreign hackers?
I think you might be right, It certainly feels like there is some ‘pre-positioning’ going on doesn’t it…
As it happens, I was sitting with the power off, in a cut, a few days ago.
Apparently a local issue but, at the time, generation of electricity was 30% gas, 30% nuclear/biomass and 30% interconnectors.
Renewables were giving us a measly 8.9%…
I’ve never seen the interconnectors providing so much of our demand as they have been recently, low wind and no solar overnight but even during the day.
This has to be deliberate and even Dale Vince has noticed.
Or, in simple terms, why commit murder when the other side is likely to commit suicide? When it comes to reliable electricity generation, what seems to have been left on the shelf are proposals for tidal flow generation, such as a Bristol Channel barrage etc. I wonder why. Perhaps it isn’t as green as some might say, a cynic might suggest.
Apart from the barrage scheme, there are a few mini projects on both sides of the channel, like this one: https://marksbarfield.com/projects/west-somerset-lagoon/
There are good financial reasons why there are few projects of this type.
I believe there are issues with silting, so far as Bristol Channel goes? Hence the lovely mud beaches of Weston/Super-Mare?
The reason for the murder is because you can do it, and are beyond the reach of retribution which allows you to celebrate it to discourage others from dealing with you.
The Telegraph is an insane war mongering rag these days, a plain as day conduit for placed stories about the evil Russians or whoever the enemy-du-jour is.
Sadly, it seems to have succeeding in brainwashing the majority of its readers. Anyone who attempts to inject some nuance or context into its Ukraine stories via the comments section gets howled down as a ‘Putin apologist’ or a Kremlin agent, a Pavlovian response if ever there was one.
Crushed between the triple pincer of Net Zero, mass immigration, and WWIII there isn’t going to be anything left of Britain worth defending.
