There’s no diversity casting when it comes to athletics. You are either fast enough or you’re not. So it is with the remarkable Amy Hunt, who won four gold medals last week at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. As such, she is the first athlete to win four gold medals at a European Championship.
Ms Hunt is something of a phenomenon. Public school with accent to match, Cambridge University and lots of bling. She has created a persona that is both posh and sassy. She made her intention of taking four gold medals plain at the outset in her sprinting events (100 and 200 metres and the 4 x 100 metres women’s and 4 x 100 metres mixed relays).
I find her manner of address – with her well-practised posing, ballerina style, the air-kissing and displays of her bejewelled fingernails – slightly irritating. But, nevertheless, she is unforgettable. Oh, and did I mention that she is white? Oops, I’ve just gone and got myself cancelled.
I was once having breakfast with a colleague at Penn State University who, up to the point of that breakfast, had been a good and friendly colleague. We were on an academic visit to explore collaborations with my then employer, the University of Sheffield. Penn State is home to the Nittany Lions, the name shared by the university American football team and the basketball teams.
There was a significant inter-varsity basketball competition on at the same time as our visit, and the Nittany Lions female team were in the same accommodation as us. They arrived while we were sitting in the foyer and all we could do was stare open-mouthed. These ladies were super-models, all well over six feet tall and all of them were black. We did not see them playing, but were taken to see the male team play. All of them were also black.
I made the mistake of bringing up the fact that both teams were exclusively black over breakfast and raising the possibility that, perhaps, they had some inherent advantage over white athletes. I was on the verge of saying that this was not exclusive, of course, but it was noticeable. My erstwhile colleague – a professor of law and a former police officer – simply exploded. How dare I say such a thing? He could point to plenty of black people who were not fast runners. Clearly, the concepts of probability and averages were beyond him.
As other colleagues arrived – two very senior ones – he took delight in telling them that I considered that black athletes had some genetic advantage over white athletes. I had not used the word ‘genetic’, but I suppose it was implied. We never spoke again.
Fast forward, as they say, to the European Championships in Birmingham and Amy Hunt who, I mentioned, is white. Why should I say that? Well, the 4 x 100 metres male team was 75% black, likewise the 4 x 100 metres female team, the 4 x 400 metres male team and the 4 x 100 metres mixed team. The 4 x 400 metres female team was 100% black and only the 4 x 400 metres mixed relay team bucked the trend by being 75% white.
The teams are not, of course, independent as some of the same athletes competed in more than one relay. But I leave ‘the math’ to you. People who identify as black make up less than 4% of the United Kingdom yet approximately 70% of the relay teams competing in the 2026 European Championships were black. Are we not supposed to notice or speculate on the reasons?
Anyway, I am just saying, not speculating. But it is strange how many black chief executives, judges, barristers and heads of sections of major government departments there are – on TV. Take the series the Undeclared War as a case in point. Excellent drama, but the diversity casting is off the scale.
As I said at the start, there is no diversity casting in athletics; performance is everything. But the issue of the imbalance is never mentioned. International athletics is colour-blind, but the viewers are not. Neither was Michael Johnson, who made a famous documentary in which he speculated that the predominance of black athletes in sprinting was a result of natural selection emanating from the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Of course, he was pilloried and he may well have been wrong. But there has to be some explanation!

I cannot see that a transatlantic crossing made by ancestors several generations ago can be relevant. Do we not all remember the remarkable running of Ethiopian athletes who had never been to the US. Kenyan too.
Some odd comments made here.
Yes of course there are genetic traits that differ between races/ethnicities, and yes they impact the physical characteristics of different ‘peoples’ – from muscle density, predisposition to certain diseases, height, mental aspects including small differences in brains/average IQ etc etc etc.
Sprinters are overwhelmingly black because they have a higher muscle body mass. For the same reason you rarely ever see a black olympic swimmer.
The whole point is of course that the left is happy to have all black teams on merit, but not happy to have all white teams on merit. That is – in all walks of life, not just sport.
We are born different and are not born ‘equal’. The problem is people wanting more black professors because otherwise ‘it is racist’ are undermining simple meritocracy, just as people wanting more white sprinters would be. It is the ridiculous truth denying hypocrisy that stands out again and again.
And yes there are huge cultural differences too. There is no part of black culture that involves playing polo or crown green bowling. The Williams sisters father broke the culural barrier that says blacks don’t play tennis, knowing full well that in the… Read more »
In 1984 O’ Brien asks Smith what 2 and 2 equals. O’Brien replies ” Whatever the Party says it is”.
Isn’t that meritocracy though? The best performers rise to the top irrespective of their race. Like Amy Hunt or Caitlin Clarke in the WNBA. or would the good doctor like tokenism, something Conservatives and The Right dislike, in sports where there are too few White athletes? Would that apply to also chucking in some token ethnics into other sports like swimming?
Does Dr Roger Watson ask why Whites dominate
swimming
tennis
motor spots
skiing
shooting
ice hockey
horse racing
Equestrian events
snooker
bowling
Polo
gymnastics
But Blacks dominating sprint events and basketball needs to be studied.
Because its not normal?
The fascination with Black athletes’ dominance in certain sports is troubling and hypocritical. No one questions why White athletes dominate the sports I listed. But for other sports, there are so many articles on fast twitch muscles and the transatlantic slave trade. Why is that I wonder?
I think these days no-one would be discussing any of this were it not for constant accusations of racism levelled at white people.
It isn’t entirely clear what the point of this article is. It ends up being what is so common on the left – musing about one’s perception of racial inequalities.
In my younger days I was a more than competent distance runner. It wasn’t until some years later, after a visit to the hospital, that I found out I had larger than average lungs. Great for getting the oxygen pumping. Genetics? I guess so.
I’ve noticed and always assumed that because there were so many British footballers and other sports people who are black, it was because of their ancestry! It’s well known that black people develop stronger muscles than white people!
A natural phenomenon perhaps, but that doesn’t explain the judges and barristers et al! Hmmm!
I could understand the objection if there was a suggestion that somehow black athletes got to the top through DEI but they obviously didn’t and it is ridiculous to think mentioning their abilities is regarded as racist. Imagine the furore if white athletes did best and it was mentioned! I was just glad to see she’s an actual woman, and British.
In over 2000 years, the indigenous black people on the continent of Africa never built or launched a single seaworthy boat to allow them to escape Africa. There was not a single two storey building built, just basic huts made with wood straw or stones. Not a single statue was erected to an influential black person. It was only when the dreaded white man arrived did that change. They don’t act or think or create as white people do. That statement was made by a black priest.
YouTube threw me a video of Femke Bol, a Dutch middle distance runner with the most relaxed running style I have ever seen. A tall, slim white girl, like a gazelle, she glided past the top (all black) American runners in an amazing final leg of a 4×400 mixed relay. Stunning.
A link to the video: From 4th to 1st in one lap, Femke Bol’s incredible comeback!
Wow! What a performance. Yeah, she runs like a natural, rather than relying on sheer power.
Since when has there been a mixed relay race?
A limited form is that each team has 2 males and 2 females. Like mixed doubles in tennis!
But how can they tell?
It’s all very odd. The middle distance events tend to be dominated by Whilte athletes. Marathon Blacks.
The Italian & Spanish football team, while representing countries with similar sized black populations as France & the UK, have until very recently been almost exclusively White.
“… the predominance of black athletes in sprinting was a result of natural selection emanating from the trans-Atlantic slave trade. “
So was there a lot of survival dependant need to sprint on the cotton, sugar and tobacco plantations?
However Africans never moved beyond hunter/gathers, so running after your dinner, or running away from being dinner would naturally select for fast runners.
Physique certainly is an inherited characteristic, and this is why runners all have the same physiques, irrespective of race.
We don’t see many Black swimmers or divers or tennis players.
Exactly, the slaves couldn’t fast enough and were caught by African slavers. But all Africans had to be fast enough to catch and escape wild animals and their ancestors have an inherited ability for athletics. It’s obvious.
When France were eliminated from the football world cup, one cynic remarked that France was “the last African team to leave the competition”
Our whiteys were boosted by the three goalkeepers something they seem not to excel at.
Meh. If it’s not genetics it must be upbringing.
As for Amy Hunt, that’s easily explained: White privilege. There. Done.
I do believe there is a genetic difference in play among sprinters, to do with the quantity of “fast twitch” muscle fibre, which allows greater speed. If we see mostly black sprinters on our screens, I see that as a sign of meritocracy in operation, and I really don’t have a problem with it.
Elite athletes are outliers on the far right hand side of the performance bell curve. The curve for sprinters is a slightly different shape for people originating genetically from certain specific regions, just as it is for distance runners. But the curve for intelligence is the same for every genetic group…
Are you sure?
100% It must be true, because that is what all right thinking people tell me. Different outcomes are due to racism except when they are not.
You are a fine Party man.
I take your point, after having missed it at first.
But I think that there may be cultural aspects to Kenyan (for example) prominence in endurance running and selection aspects (e.g. surviving the Atlantic crossing and the plantations) in African American success in sprinting.
It’s too complicated for me.
Surely Kenyan prominence is selection too? Success in sprinting is from a particular part of west Africa. I don’t know why people are happy to say they believe in evolution via natural selection but somehow say they think it can’t have an influence on differences between modern human ethnic groups. I suspect it has a lot to do with episodes such as slavery, more recently ethnic cleansing/attempted genocide in various countries – I think people just deny what they really honestly see because they think that recognising genetics matters leads inevitably to death camps/eugenics or whatever. I am more than happy to shut up about genetics if race baiters stop playing the race card and we all stop talking about race entirely and treat at least the citizens of our own countries as individuals not as belonging to some arbitrary group.
I have no wish to argue that genetics don’t matter. I just thought that the Kenyan runners (if one can use a group term for numerous individuals) were helped by where they lived (high up) and their customs of running. There are so many factors.
Thanks for the reply.
Yes my comment was not necessarily aimed at you, just a general thought really. I think living high up causes adaptations that are baked into genetics, and yes of course customs and traditions do matter up to a point but I think it’s mainly that they convert oxygen more efficiently.
Ethiopians are endurance runners too – another high altitude East African country.
West and Central Africa is very fertile and full of game. One does not have to travel far to feed oneself. East Africa is savannah where people have to travel far. Hunting game largely comprises firing arrows with poison on them and then chasing them until they die. The Zulus could run 50 miles and fight a battle. Shaka ran 70 miles to see his Mother before she died. The Zulus have a pace called ” Eater of the Earth ” which is about 5 to 6 miles per hour.
Large build with heavy muscle and bone, red hair, blue eyes and white skin evolved to survive close to the ice during the Ice ages of the last 2.6 million years.
Those living at altitude such as Nepalese have very high oxygen capacity as measured by VO2 max test such as Gurkhas.

Sheltand ponies, thorougbreds and shire horses….
Horses for courses.
Woke ideology is built on and absolutely depends on not believing what you see with your eyes and thinking your own thoughts but rather believing only what you are told.
A well indoctrinated drone not only does all that but also chastises anyone who doesn’t. Probably in large measure for their own protection. The cognitive dissonance can otherwise be unbearable.
