Though he spent four and a half years as leader of the Labour Party, Ed Miliband, formerly secretary of state for energy security and Net Zero, is synonymous with climate policy. His characteristic zeal was evident for the 20 months he served as the first secretary of state for energy and climate change in the dying days of Gordon Brown’s government. But following Andy Burnham’s coronation, Miliband has been appointed to the Foreign Office, and replaced at DESNZ by a relatively unknown junior minister, Miatta Fahnbulleh. So what does this game of musical chairs signify? What does it mean for Britain’s mad Net Zero agenda?
It’s been clear since the General Election that something was going to give. Many, including me, didn’t think that Miliband and his brand of Net Zero would last this long. But the dam broke upstream of DESNZ and Ed. Early rumours suggested that Miliband would give the top job another go and was among the favourites to occupy Number 10. But, having ruled himself out, and as the concept of democratic contest drained from the question of the party’s leadership, Miliband was being touted as a possible fit for Number 11. It would be harder to say if Miliband hadn’t been such a zealot, but there is clearly some significance to his move away from climate and energy. Sounds like a good plan to appoint a nobody like Fattybullah to the job just as it really begins to unravel. We know that Mad Ed’s plan had failed from Minute One and as we get closer to not having enough reliable generation hard decisions have to be made so having a nonentity means they can be brushed aside in a way Mad Ed couldn’t. But then so much of government comes as an unexpected outcome because they are unable to plan.
Seems to have been raised with the belief that the solution to every woe is other peoples’ money (a bit like her predecessor, but more so).
Miliband wouldn’t want to be in DESNZ when the first major power outage occurs. As long as the grid stays up until Winter he can probably convince far too many people to blame Fahnbulleh when it does happen.
David Turver on his Eigenvalues site has an article on the NESO grid, which used to be run by National Grid and has been taken over by government, has been embarrassed by engineer whistle-blowers telling Clair Courtino that the system is dangerously near collapse because of lack of spinning reserves, as in Iberia. The management of course have denied everything and attacked the messenger for damaging the company. The article identifies 7 ways in which standards have been fiddled to a dangerous level of reserves.

There is no point in trying to make her see sense. She wants an “economy that works for people”. How does a wrecked economy and national bankruptcy “work for people”? It threatens livelihoods, health, social mobility, social cohesion. History has proved that the only kind of economy that really works for people is based on plentiful supplies of cheap energy, and that’s something we could have. It takes the political will not, as she thinks, to push Net Zero harder, but to take a step back, admit we’ve been on the wrong path, and get back to the basics.
Because these people are without exception creatures of the blob, and have never had to make anything real, work and have always existed in an ideological echo chamber, they are utterly devoid of the basic skills of management.
They do not understand that there no solutions only trade-offs and seem to be totally lacking in any moral or intellectual hinterland.
They are without exception unfit for the highest offices of state, and that sorry situation is likely to cost us our livelihoods, our country and indeed our civilization.

I have heard her speak several times on the radio, and each time I’m left with the feeling that she’s not quite the full ticket. She appears to have the knack of saying absolutely nothing, very confidently.
