The leader of the notorious Rochdale grooming gang – convicted of 30 child rapes – has been released from prison today after serving just 14 years – less than six months per rape – as Downing Street insists it is powerless to deport him. The Mail has more.
Shabir Ahmed, 73, walked free from HMP Leeds on Thursday and is set to begin life in a bail hostel in the north of England, at an estimated cost to taxpayers of £120 a night.
He is moving in to a facility close to Rochdale, where many of his victims still live, and is wearing a GPS tag.
Ahmed – who instructed his victims to call him ‘Daddy’ – is a Pakistani national who acquired British citizenship through naturalisation. He plied girls as young as 13 with drink and drugs before ‘passing them around’ to be abused by him and eight associates.
Despite his conviction in 2012, his victims – most of them white working-class girls – have been told he cannot be deported to Pakistan because of a legal loophole.
They have also voiced fears for their safety now the Rochdale grooming gang leader is free after serving 14 years of a 19-year sentence.
The Ministry of Justice has refused to say if he is out of jail, citing “security reasons”, but a source told the Daily Mail: “Ahmed has already been released. He is in a secure placement just outside the GMP area.”
Ahmed held dual British-Pakistani citizenship and was stripped of his British citizenship following his conviction. Yet the Government insists it has no legal powers to remove him from the UK.
Prime Minister-in-waiting Andy Burnham has said he will ask senior Ministers to find a way to deport Ahmed, declaring that “nothing is off the table”.
But he was undermined by Downing Street today, where Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesman said Ahmed had an “exemption from deportation” under UK law.
“Ahmed’s horrific crimes were at the heart of the grooming gang scandal which represents one of the darkest moments in our country’s history. He will rightly be on the sex offenders’ register for life, ordered to stay away from his victims and banned from contacting any child or young person,” she told reporters.
“His every movement will be tracked and he will be forced to wear an electronic tag. In this specific case we cannot deport someone who is protected by the 1971 Immigration Act, these are the same provisions which have protected many individuals caught up in the Windrush crisis.”
Asked if Starmer is frustrated at the law blocking Ahmed’s deportation, the spokesman added: “It is fair to say the PM would always want to see these vile criminals deported.”
The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesperson added that the PM has asked the Home Secretary to look into all options including “what can be done to remove this individual from the UK”.
Ahmed has spent years fighting deportation to Pakistan at taxpayers’ expense, citing human rights laws and arguing that his removal from the UK would affect the welfare of his children.
After his convictions, he complained it was because there were ‘eleven white jurors’ at his trial, adding: “It’s become fashionable to blame everything on Muslims these days.”

The Immigration Act supposedly stopping his deportation could be amended by a Statutory Instrument – which would take about 48 hours.
They don’t want to do it.
They won’t force Pakistan to have their rapists/criminals/gangs/terrorists back because they don’t want to.
Personally, I’d put him on a plane to Pakistani; open the doors somewhere over the Med and push him out.
Now before you all get cross, I am in no way offering forgiveness, or sympathy for 2 men whose crimes should see them hanging from the end of a rope, But can I draw the following.
This absolute savage, monster of a man, who has the fortune to be one of the elite class held as the highest caste by our betters, a man who has raped, tortured (and who knows what else ), little girls, children a prolific Pedophile, he has served 14 years for his multiple acts, and with let us not forget bringing his other high caste mates into the “party”.
Wheras Garry Glitter, also a Pedophile, but to my knowledge not a leader of a gang of them, not as far as I am aware a torturer, and not one of the high caste, has been in jail for 21 years with a short break for breaking his parole with no chance of being released. Which is a blessing for all of us and our children.

I realise this is a tangent but was such a conciliatory opening really necessary? If you have an opinion to share or point to make then own it. Why the trepidation about how strangers on a website that you’re never going to meet will react? Is their perception of you and approval of your comment so important to you? Your tone comes across as completely at odds with your achievements as a successful businesswoman, that you’ve previously mentioned on here. As a fellow woman I feel I couldn’t be more anomalous when it comes to how females behave generally on this site if I tried.
Regarding your point: I agree, the disparity is real and blatant, but couldn’t we keep making these comparisons until the cows come home? I think much of it is just down to the individual judge on the day, which is ridiculous seeing as there’s supposed to be sentencing guidelines. We can see this with the recent jailing of those teenage rapists. At first they got off with no custodial sentence at all but they’ve since been jailed for four years. It is unacceptable for a prisoner to be released after serving 14 years of a 19-year sentence. Honest sentencing should mean misbehaviour is rewarded by additional time. As a foreign national he should have been deported into his home country’s custody system after (say) half the sentence. All his assets in this country should be used to try to compensate his victims and any overseas remittances he made in the period of offending should be recoverable or else the beneficiaries forever barred from this country. He should never be allowed anywhere in the Anglosphere but we cannot control the left liberals in some of them so let’s just settle for keeping him out of the UK and dependant overseas territories.

Not mentioned in that article, but according to the Beeb, in print & on Radio 4, “Earlier this week victims of the gang were told provisions under the Immigration Act 1971 barred the removal of any Commonwealth citizen who arrived in the UK before 1973 and had been in the country for five years. ”
So, looking back to 1971. Maybe they might have to change the Immigration Act 1971.

Excellent. Hang the Evil B*stard and send his body back to Pakistan, escorted by his entire deported family, who all knew about his atrocities and did nothing.
Why should his victims have to suffer the trauma of seeing him leering and strutting around on the streets of their own city ever again? And why should the British Taxpayers support him and his evil family for the rest of their parasitic lives, while still lavishing Foreign Aid upon Pakistan?
