“Is Miatta Fahnbulleh the brains behind Burnham?” asks the New Statesman this week in a piece about the Labour (Co-op) MP for Peckham, who was up until May the Parliamentary under-secretary for housing, communities and local government.
Fahnbulleh is hardly a household name, but has received increasing attention since she became the first minister to resign over Keir Starmer’s premiership. The BBC has called her one of the “key figures in Andy Burnham’s inner circle”, said to be working on policy ideas for his potential government.
All this might give you the idea of an economic mastermind at work (the New Statesman has even coined the term “Fahnbullehism”). But I can’t help thinking she is simply someone churned out through the Left-wing “machine”, starting with her PhD in economic development from the London School of Economics, founded by members of the Fabian Society (including George Bernard Shaw). Fahnbulleh then worked as director of policy and research at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), before becoming the chief executive of the New Economics Foundation (NEF), two organisations that advocate batty socialist policies, such as wanting to “triple the amount of offshore wind” (IPPR) and create a national wealth fund (NEF). One of the IPPR’s researchers even talked about the need for reparations on BBC Politics Live.
But what’s more interesting is that, while CEO of the NEF, Fahnbulleh received media training from the New Economy Organisers Network (NEON), an organisation that produces Left-wing activists for

This is the problem of the modern world and another link in the chain that needs smashing. I don’t care if it is people like Fahnbulleh or a Tory, educated at Harrow or Eton, degree, work for a think tank, job as a Spad and then elected to parliament. Neither should be in any position of power or influence with such a blinkered upbringing. Nothing highlights this more than watching the news and a guest comes on, described as a former adviser to Blair, Cameron or May or any minister in the governments of those three and the individual looks as though they are still barely out of university. How old were they as spads and what rubbish were they whispering into the ear of their employer? Why do the supposedly intelligent and politically minded ministers listen to one word from these inexperienced in life youngsters.
So many foundations mentioned in the article and all qualify for charitable status.
If charitable status was removed then up to £7 billion could be saved annually.
Charitable status means that a form of tax is levied on the citizens of the country by the tax exemption of a certain sector.
Give all you want to charities but I bet that those giving would wonder why the foundations mentioned should be supported by what is in essence a hidden tax – ie – if the charities don’t pay it someone else has to.
A lot of small charities doing very valuable work – small animal rescue centers, for example – are barely managing financially.
If they had to pay tax, they would go under.
I know some of these charities and believe me, they are hardly surviving.
You make a fair point and I would not wish to make these very hands on and volunteer supported charities worse off, but the Foundations mentioned in the article hardly come into that category. The problem is, I think, that the general public have a fair inkling of what a charity is but this is not reflected in the breadth of organisations covered by charity status. Perhaps charity status should be given out more selectively.
