Westminster hopeful Andy Burnham has been called a hypocrite after it was revealed he has been renting out a London flat that was partly funded by his MP’s expenses. The Mail has more.
Labour’s Makerfield by-election candidate bought the two-bedroom Kennington property in 2005 and since then its value has doubled to £480,000.
Mr Burnham – who has often lamented young people’s inability to get on the housing ladder – used taxpayers’ cash to pay his mortgage interest on the property using his MP expenses – an allowance that was scrapped following the 2009 expenses crisis.
He was branded a hypocrite by the Tories. Kevin Hollinrake, the Conservative Party chairman, told the Sun on Sunday: “The self-styled King of the North, it turns out, has kept a rather comfortable foothold south of the river.
“Bought thanks to expenses, doubled in value, rented out for profit – despite cries of unfairness against the landlord class he is a part of. There is a certain whiff of hypocrisy.”
In 2015, it was revealed that the then Shadow Health Secretary was renting out the former council flat while charging taxpayers around £17,000 a year to rent a different flat nearby.
While it was within the rules, Mr Burnham was accused of showing a “lack of judgment”. His spokesman declined to comment.

He’s no mug, is he? Pockets the rent on the flat he owns whilst getting a free one from the taxpayer. Probably thinks its OK because the amount some high earner is allowed to keep after paying his income tax is more than an MPs gross pay
I see “Andy” is using a cartoon characterisation of himself on his posters instead of an actual picture of himself. I wonder what the thinking is behind this, does it make him seem more human, more presentable? Is this the way to go for politicians?

I’m shocked, shocked I tell you, to discover that (insert politicians name) doesn’t totally believe what he preaches and is actually in it for career and personal benefit.
Who would have known.
Especially not a real socialist like him – a true man of the people. Socialists believe in fairness and equality for everyone, including themselves. There is no precedent anywhere for people who claim to be on the political left running countries like personal fiefdoms and being privileged hypocrites. Well, I guess those Russians are generally horrid people – British politicians are made from different, non evil DNA so they are incapable of such things.

The picture clearly shows he’s just another ‘wide boy’ on the make. And the alternative is dear Ange, whose IQ has (seemingly) never exceeded her shoe size.
How on earth did we get here?
We got here because people are weak, scared and impecunious.
And intellectually idle.
Many (not all) people are now as you describe. But they certainly weren’t in the 60s, 70s 80s and 90s. I think it’s the ‘leadership’ that has changed, which has had a paralysing effect on the population. It started with J Major and plummeted thereafter.
I think having PMs with zero moral compass doesn’t help.
There has also been relentless “reprogramming” of the population to encourage group think and acquiescence to state diktats.
Because the Uniparty is scared of knowledgable people given that their politicians are thick as mince, but far less useful, and cringe and cower when faced by somebody who knows what they are talking about – excludes the legacy media clearly – and run off the be soothed by their favourite people with ‘prestige’. ‘Prestige’ is bestowed by who you are not what you know which is why politicians are often lectured by morons.
