A Green Party candidate pushing Britain to pay trillions of pounds in slavery reparations is descended from a slave-trading Nigerian royal family. The Mail has the story.
Antoinette Fernandez is the “reparations officer” for the party’s Global Majority Greens group which campaigns for “racial and environmental justice”.
However, she is also the daughter of a billionaire oil baron who was one of Africa’s richest men.
The local election candidate has campaigned for British taxpayers to pay reparations for the transatlantic slave trade and said that politicians who oppose it “show an appalling arrogance”.
Fernandez – who is standing for Zack Polanski’s party in London – is the daughter of the Queen Mother of Lagos and is given the title “princess” in the Nigerian press.
Her mother is Abiola Dosunmu and her father is Antonio Deinde Fernandez, a late business magnate and UN ambassador who is said to have made his fortune in oil, gas and mining and had a reported net worth of $8.7 billion (£6.5 billion) when he died in 2015.
Through her mother, the Green politician is a descendant of the Obas (kings) of Lagos, some of whom historians describe as “major” slave traders that made “lucrative commissions from slave deals”.
One of Fernandez’s ancient relatives personally owned 1,400 slaves and another even brought back slaves that had been sent to Brazil to build houses in Lagos, according to one historian.
The campaigner’s family accrued wealth through the slave trade which they used to purchase “velvet clothes, royal umbrellas, hats and stylish robes”, the account adds.
On Monday the Conservatives and Reform UK rounded on Ms Fernandez, branding her the “ultimate hypocrite” for demanding hard-up Britons shell out for reparations.
But the Green Party said that reporting Fernandez’s lineage is “racist” and a “bad-faith attempt to undermine the case for reparative justice”.
Britain abolished the slave trade in 1807 and then spent millions of pounds – billions in today’s money – and thousands of sailors’ lives putting an end to the practice worldwide.

We should declare them scrap metal, give the Africans who want them some time to collect them at their own expense and simply melt them afterwards. This raises so many flags, doesn’t it. One, not all black people living in Europe are descended from slaves, as she demonstrates. Two, not all slaves in the Americas were black, during the Tudor, Jacobite and Cromwellian era, many Scots and Irish were enslaved and sent overseas. Finally, not all slave owners were British. And yet, in the world of reparations, only white British people are guilty and have to cough up. I’d hazard from her name, that there is some Iberian blood in her veins, so maybe she should be living in Madrid or Lisbon spouting her poison and making her fraudulent claims.
What a stupid stupid woman sums up The Green Party which like a The Labour Party and The Conservative Party is a misnomer.

Who is the ultimate hypocrite in this: one wealthy Ethnic African Nigerian woman descended from Slavetraders criticises another wealthy Ethnic African Nigerian woman descended from Slavetraders, while hiding her own ancestors’ involvement. And both of them have played the Race Card to further their greedy political ambitions.

The vast majority of people who are descended from slaves have ancestors from widely separated parts of Africa. If their ancestors weren’t enslaved they’d never have met and had descendants. Therefore tens of millions of people owe their existence to slavery plus all the descendants of slaves that have passed away and goodness knows how many future generations of people who will be descended from slaves.
Generally it isn’t possible to put a value on human life, an exception would be this stupid women who’s worth less than a quid, but even if it’s only tens of thousands of pounds the total “value” of people who owe their existence to slavery, including those yet to be born, could well run into the hundreds or thousand’s of trillions. Who owes who a lot of money?

I fully agree with you. These people equate reparations with “justice”, but really they’re merely a means of exacting revenge and reopening old wounds.
This is not revenge. And it’s not about reopening anything. This is (in all likeliness) just about a bunch of people/ NGOs in the USA who never had any relation to Britain who think they’ve come up with a brilliant money-making scheme. And the UN is obviously involved with this as well.

Let me give you this example-

I have this problem with my friends, they would rather think of the money spent on the abolition of slavery as a reward to the slave owners rather than a way to buy the freedom of the slaves. I realise that neither view accepts any nuance but nuance there is.
Both views are objectively wrong. Slave owners didn’t get rewarded for anything, they were compensated for the financial loss inflicted on them and the state didn’t buy the freedom of the slave but the ownership of them. After it had become the monopoly slave owner, it could set the slaves free.
This whole idea of “reward” is based on a seriously misguided idea of retroactive morality which some people claim really should have trumped legal properness. The slave owners hadn’t done anything wrong and obviously didn’t share the abolitionist’s opinions about desirable future policy.

This cannot be repeated often enough. The British did not enslave anyone. We were a trading nation. The kings and tribal leaders enslaved their own people, then happily sold them on so they could buy nice stuff for themselves.
It is to our ancestors great credit that we as a nation realised slaves were not the kind of commodity we want to trade and transport any more.

Point taken (and comment upticked), but the transatlantic slave trade was ended when slave owners realised that they were better off employing seasonal workers (who then had to attend to their own welfare and accommodation and support themselves out of season) and the British Government paid reparations to the slave owners – a practice that continued to their descendants right into the present Century.
Legally, the slaves were property of their respective owners who had broken no laws by acquiring and using them and had no particular reason to have any misgivings about this as slavery had existed all over the world since prehistoric times (in all likeliness, considering that the old testament contains rules about the proper treatment of slaves). The Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 thus decreed a compulsory purchase of all slaves by the British state which then set them free aftewards.
That’s the proper procedure for stripping someone of some property in the interest of some common good and that people like Antoinette Fernandez try to construct some just cause of grievance out of that just serves to emphasize their general dishonesty. Had her ancestors of that time had had any say over the matter, it doubtlessly wouldn’t have happened at all.
