“Hateful” Professor Who Insists St George’s Flag “Represents Racism, Not Patriotism” and Should be Changed

2 min read

A Good Morning Britain guest has sparked outrage by claiming the St George’s flag is “racist” and should be replaced. The Mail has more.

Controversial black studies professor Kehinde Andrews, who has previously attacked Britain and the Royal Family, claimed England’s national flag was deep-rooted in racism amid a row over a “patriotic outpouring” around the country.

An online movement called ‘Operation Raise the Colours’ has led to communities across the country hanging up Union Jack and St George’s flags, including in Birmingham, London, Bradford, Newcastle and Norwich. …

Speaking on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, Prof Andrews weighed into the nationwide debate, telling hosts Adil Ray and Kate Garraway that the history of the flag has always been problematic and “represents racism”.

Prof Andrews, Professor of Black Studies at Birmingham City University, said: “It’s not that the far-Right has co-opted the flag. It’s that we don’t understand what this country is and the history of both of these symbols.

“Both of these flags are the flags that were flown on ships that enslaved my ancestors; those are the flags that the British Army marched into places like Pakistan, India, Bengal, Africa and colonised 25% of the world.

“The reason the far-Right picks up these flags and has consistently since the 60s, 70s, since my parents’ generation have been in the country is because these flags represent the racism that they are putting out into the world.

“This campaign of putting these flags up, this is not some benign ‘let’s just be patriotic’… go and search ‘Operation Raise the Colours’ and you will find the same far-Right, Little England, this nonsense-spewing about migrant hotels… this is what it’s about.”

He added: “People aren’t putting up these flags to celebrate Britain, they’re putting up this flag to remind us that Britain is white and we shouldn’t be here.”

Prof Andrews… once declared that the late Queen Elizabeth II was “the number one symbol of white supremacy in the world” and claimed the British Empire was “far worse than the Nazis”.

He could move to a country where he does like the national flag!

It stands for much more than what he accuses! Its the flag of the people living in these islands.

With any luck, a couple of years from now, the employment statistics for “Black Studies” Degree holders will open parents’ and prospective student’s eyes and Prof Andrews may be scratching around for new employment – stitching flags perhaps?

I think it’s time he moved to a country that reflects his beliefs, oh, but Africa still has slaves; but they are probably acceptable slaves.
i really don’t want someone living in my country that hates it to that degree.

17 million black Africans were enslaved in the Arab slaving operation, many rescued by the British Royal Navy in the 19thC.

Nice article. But playing this game is a mistake. Slavery is an ancient insitution of mankind which has existed in all ages and all cultures. In particular, it also existed among the people who sold captives from other tribes or even members of their own tribe to British and American traders who needed masses of cheap agricultural workers. It wasn’t invented by “evil white people” to harm “poor black people”, that’s an ahistoric, contemporary American myth which is deeply rooted in the legal discrimination against black citizens/ inhabitants of the USA until the last third of the last century, the consequences of which have not yet been completely overcome.

We consider slavery morally repellent nowadays and believe that suicide and extramaritial sex are perfectly ok. Someone from the 18th century, even slave trader, would consider us amoral degenerates because of this and wouldn’t understand our obsession with slavery at all.

That people had different ideas about what is and isn’t morally appropriate in the past is just a historical fact. It’s not the fault of people who are living now.

The repellent element, though, is that it’s only the past ideas and behaviors of white people that are held up for condemnation.

This has a historical/ cultural explanation: All of this stuff is really American in origin and just forced onto us. As legacy of large-scale slavery in the American south, the USA has a large black minority and continued to discriminate against members of it until the late 20th century. And that’s where this black/ white dichotomy comes from, including the underlying assumption that black and white are the only distinctions which matter here despite black people in Africa are intensely tribal and white people in Europe historically didn’t even think they belonged all to the same race¹, let alone all form a large happy group of undivided people joyfully mixing with each other.

The black/ white or – slightly more elaborate but still wrong – global majority/ white notion is really a square peg someone wants to hammer into the round hole called Europe because this someone (or rather, these someones) do not want to be bothered with anything outside of their own microcosmos and thus, consider that fact that the round hole is actually round not an opportunity to revise their coarse-grained worldview but just another proof of the evil whiteness of the evil whites: They don’t even accept… Read more »

An amazingly stupid statement. Yes, both the English flag and the Union Jack were flown on English/ British ships by the time slavery was still considered a perfectly proper part of God’s world order, as evidenced by the divine regulations about proper treatement of slaves in the Old Testament.

So what?

It’s the English flag, with the cross of St. George on it (insofar I kow this). It’s usually flown from the tower of Reading minster. As that’s part of the CoE, the claim that it would represent “racism” is rather bizarre.

A good point. The Saltire or cross of St Andrew adorns the Scottish flag but I don’t suppose most people who wave it are thinking of the brother of St Peter (him with the keys).

Flags are not about race, they are about sovereignty and national allegiance. Far-right nationalists were very successful in weaponising the Flag of St George as an emblem of their racist views. It’s time for moderate, patriotic British and English people to reclaim their flags for their intended purpose. It’s time for us to stop being made to feel that we have to apologise for who we are.

If the flag is racist what does that make him?, his own ancestors were some of the first slave dealers, and sold many whites as well as their own, he has made an excellent “living” out of spouting his racist views, no one but no one picks their skin colour, but they do pick their attitude, I would suggest if he despises this country so much and the patriotism behind the flags, that he takes himself and all his family back to their ancestoral country, they wont be missed!!

People like Andrew’s make a living by promoting racism and division. I doubt he would decry the atrocities Africans committed against each other in the past and the terrible conditions they force upon themselves to this day.

They will always try to stereotype people and protest loudly when it is done to them. His heritage is nothing to be proud of, his race have made almost no contribution to the betterment of mankind and this so called academic should be grateful to a country that has done more to relieve suffering and hardship than any other country in the history of mankind.

If he is so concerned about the welfare of black people I would suggest he goes to Africa and try to help Africans. The problem with that is he will just stir up hatred and that aside has no marketable skills that would be of use to anyone. He is a useless individual who contributes nothing to the betterment of mankind and exemplifies failure of the post war multi cultural experiment that has been forced upon the people of the UK and other countries.

He was supposedly from Cappodocia, which was Christian 600 years before Islam, and the whole story of the dragon is fiction, the England flag being adopted from the Flag of Genoa.

People should forget the fictional George, and focus on the flag as a patriotic symbol of England.

The Unholy Muslim-Marxist Alliance hate the England flag because it was the Flag of the Crusaders, and because it is flown from all the church towers of the Protestant Church of England.

As Joseph Sobran has put it:

‘The concept of envy — the hatred of the superior — has dropped out of our moral vocabulary [and thus] the idea that white Christian civilization is hated more for its virtues than its sins doesn’t occur to us … Western man towers over the rest of the world in ways so large as to be almost inexpressible. It’s Western exploration, science, and conquest that have revealed the world to itself. Other races feel like subjects of Western power long after colonialism, imperialism and slavery have disappeared. The charge of racism puzzles whites who feel not hostility, but only baffled good will, because they don’t grasp what it [white excellence] really means [for the non-whites]: humiliation. The white man presents an image of superiority even when he isn’t conscious of it. Superiority excites envy. Destroying white civilization is the inmost desire of the league of designated victims we call ‘minorities’.’

Thank you for that superb quote— it really sums up the whole situation perfectly.

It also shows how Envy always transforms into Hatred, and the desire to destroy the Envied Person or People or Civilization.

I don’t think that the flag “represents racism” but my first answer would be “so what if it does?”. I would contend that racism has been pretty much the norm throughout human history. The least racist race these days is probably the white race. One of the reasons that the least racist race gets the most criticism is that white people are arguably just better at building great civilisations that benefit their citizens- something a lot of non white people apparently agree with as they move heaven and earth to enter white countries. I think the success pisses people off.

Somebody else who didn’t read the room is Karl Perks here. What makes it worse is that he’s a Reform Councillor. Predictably he’s got a right roasting all over social media. I’m wondering how he felt about Palestine flags up lamp posts and rainbow paint jobs;

”Following recent events in Bromsgrove this weekend.
Every Englishman who flies St George’s flag does so with pride. Family, communities and country is one of our biggest policies as Reform UK and locally in Worcestershire we stand by that.
There are many ways that people can show their pride by flying the St George’s flag – in your own front and back gardens, on your cars, in your windows and on community buildings where agreed by the whole community.
Climbing up lampposts and attaching flags to them may not be the best thing to do, mostly because it’s dangerous and could cause damage. There are no specific plans to remove the flags.

What I cannot condone are acts of vandalism, costing tax payers money, this is exactly what the illegal painting of red crosses on local roundabouts will do.
This act of vandalism will cost our County Council money to rectify. As the Cabinet… Read more »
