The Omicron surge in America, which has accelerated at an incredible rate, appears to be peaking, according to analysis by J.P. Morgan.
In a report published on Tuesday, the investment banking company notes that the U.S. peak has not come any later than in the U.K., despite the lower vaccination rate.
The Omicron wave in the U.S. also looks to be peaking, despite a significantly worse vaccination profile. The overall level of fully vaccinated individuals in the US, at 62% of the total population, is lower than in the U.K., where 70% of the total population have been fully vaccinated, but the difference is not huge. More striking is the difference in the share of the population who have received a booster shot, 24% of the total population in the U.S. compared with 54% in the U.K. Given the importance of boosters in lifting protection, after the protection from the primary doses fades over time, it might have been expected that the Omicron infection upswing would last longer in the U.S. than in the U.K.. But this does not seem to be the case. It looks like the effective reproduction number in the U.S. returned to 1.0 on January 16th, only 31 days after the Omicron variant first pushed it above 1.0 in mid-December
Reported infections vary considerably by state, with some on their way down while others have yet to peak (note in the below that while all the charts show reported infections per 100,000, the scale for each state is different).
One of the more surprising aspects of the U.S. surge is that, unlike in the U.K., hospitalisations have hit record levels, despite the vaccine programme and the relative mildness of Omicron, with highly vaccinated north eastern states particularly badly affected.
To what extent this is an artefact of incidental hospital admissions is unclear as this data is not routinely published.
Even deaths are headed up in some states – and again, this includes some of the most vaccinated states in the North East (note some of the rise is pre-Omicron).
Why this is and what it means for the effectiveness of the vaccines will need to be analysed in more detail once the data is in and the dust has settled.

I have supported those who believe ‘Covid’ to be a scam – there are a few in this neck of Darkest Scandinavia – and have posted comments here in an effort to make people realise how serious this is, and to ‘wake up’ themselves.
I’ve had many discussions with people about ‘Covid’: but there’s little point trying to preach to the converted, and the ‘sheep’ just don’t want to hear anything that hasn’t officially come from the Government.
I think travelling 380 miles to the Parliament House and standing outside alone with a placard saying something the Government doesn’t approve of, would just have the Police cart me off (to who knows where – the lead mines of Siberia?).
I often give an ‘alternative view’ on here, and that may help people to look at things in a different way. Some agree with me, some don’t. No-one is forcing you to read my posts, just skip over them if you don’t like ’em.
A bunch of old ladies shaking their walking sticks at the TV and shouting “Bastards!” and busily downticking comments they don’t like in The Daily Mail and Guardian is hardly a ‘rebellion’ nor ‘showing them’.
I appreciate your comments EF but I think we have to be realistic about what is possible. The only way the narrative could have changed during the last couple of years was by complete regime change which was simply not possible, partly because clearly there was no regime waiting in the wings (a la Lenin or Robespierre) to take over and also because the equivalent of storming the Bastille couldn’t happen today.
What has been happening is that many good individuals who post on here have been having ongoing conversations with friends and family, neighbours, work colleagues etc and the drip, drip, drip of alternative views, plus the latest revelations about the rule-breaking by those who set the rules, and the mildness of the current RSV called covid have started to change the whole climate and people are beginning to wake up. That is almost certainly the way it had to happen in my view.

I think far too much time is frittered away by ‘analysing data’ – figures and statistics which can’t be proved one way or another for starters.
It’s like being in a prison cell and analysing the paint or the graffiti on the walls. Deliberately keeping heads down ‘in study’ as the reality of the situation is too hard to bear.

I can, and do, go to Tesco without a face mask, and travel on the trains etc maskless, but as you say, that’s not freedom, it’s just one degree less noxious than total tyranny.
And whilst there is a small pool of countries that will let the unvaxxed in, that pool is slowly shrinking. I could have gone to Spain last summer, not this one.
I’ve come to the conclusion that nothing major is going to change any time soon because the rebellious few are just that – too few in numbers to make a difference. Avoid establishments that require tests and masks by all means, but they’ll hardly notice your lack of trade. Too many people are fully vaxxed and compliant so that they can go about their life with minimal restrictions. They are happy with masks, happy to show their ‘papers’.
My ‘epiphany’ was when I read an airline official saying that they reckoned masks on planes would be with us for ages to come – despite the ridiculousness of the action. I thought back to the liquids on planes ban, brought in nearly 2 decades ago, and realised how stupid rules can become set in concrete.
I don’t want to be negative but I am being realistic. Until the circumstances are right, and someone of determination and courage appears, this will not be over. Ironically, it needs an event/person like Greta Thunberg to make a difference and start the change rolling. I am not that person.

It strikes me that pretty much all the data being released leaves out just enough information to be effectively useless. On face value this says boosters don’t make any difference and, as always, the vaccine effectiveness that is stated with such certainty by those who want to push the drug evaporates to nothing in the heat and light of reality.
The vaccines do nothing but harm. That’s my takeaway from this, and unless and until the full data – including the level of incidental hospital cases, true vaccine status of cases, age, co-morbitities, etc etc etc – is released that is the only conclusion any person with a modicum of scepticism can come to.

The USA have been using a lower cycle threshold for the vaccinated than the unvaccinated for the PCR test, so even if that was true then it wouldn’t be surprising and just confirms you’ve rigged the test to create deliberate bias.
I’m sure countries where there are more cyclists per capita have more cycling deaths per capita of total population each year. So cycling must be bad for your health by your irrational logic.
Much more rational to look at all cause mortality as that takes into account the harms and any benefits of experimental transfection medications and avoids issues of mis-categorisation of death.

They decided that with the on set of omicron they would do their own analysis as they had no confidence in those from CDC/SAGE etc. They were motivated by their concern that deliberately ‘partial and selective’ analysis would have a detrimental effect on their ability to forecast the effect of the virus on the economic outlook and hence investment decisions and advice. They wanted to to remove the bias that ‘rational’ and ‘rayc’ are accusing Will of exhibiting.

OH informed me this morning that Spain, in line with a few other EU countries, is now limiting tourist travel to those who have been jabbed within 270 days thus, for a lot of people, a third jab will be necessary.
Is this an acknowledgement that the “efficacy” of the jabs wane after a few months?
What will happen after those 270 days from your last jab are up? Will they have to bring in a fourth jab? The JCVI have told us that a fourth jab won’t be necessary.

Until some ‘all causes’ death numbers are produced for this period no-one really knows what is happening in the US. Hospitalisation is driven by the insurance schemes. People pay for them so they use them, especially the worried well. so you would expect higher numbers.
The JPM ( note, not Will’s) analysis appears to support the view that the virus continues to just do what virus do irrespective of man’s useless interventions, including so-called vaccines.
