Worried about rising case rates, Jonathan Van-Tam, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, has told members of the public to receive their booster shots and wear masks, while also commenting that too many think that the pandemic is already over. The Mirror has more.
He warned the every day actions of Brits will be crucial in determining how bad the pandemic gets.
Britain has had among the worst infection rates in Europe over the past month, and few restrictions to stop the spread of Covid.
So far the Government has resisted calls to launch its ‘Plan B’, which would see a return to home working and mandatory face mask wearing.
“The rates are still very high at the moment”, Professor Van-Tam told BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio 5 Live.
“They are higher than in most of Europe. And we are running quite hot – I think that’s the right expression.
“And, of course, it’s of concern to scientists that we are running this hot this early in the autumn season.
“And so, from that perspective, I’m afraid it’s caution, followed by caution, and we need to watch these data very carefully indeed over the next days and weeks.”
He added: “Too many people believe that this pandemic is now over. I personally feel there are some hard months to come in the winter and it is not over.
“The caution that people take or don’t take in terms of interacting with each other: that is going to be a big determinant in what happens between now and the darkest months of the winter”.
Despite a recent 10% dip in weekly cases, the UK remains at the top of the European charts when it comes to daily Covid infections.

One thing i’ve learned over the past 40 years or so, is that when a ‘deputy’ delivers the info its mostly, if not all, BS.
They test for the flu since they’ve never isolated Covid-19. Which makes me wonder how they can tell there is a delta variant. They never isolated the virus but they use a test to show the damage of a solution does on monkey kidney cells then show the cellular debris as proof of the virus. So, they can use this method to claim an UNENDING! amount of variants. A lot of cancers and “viruses” are probably just different forms of parasites. I have asked this question before but never got an answer. The curve for UK positive tests is flatlining rather than going up or down. This doesn’t seem to fit with what one would normally expect for virus behaviour. Any ideas?

Since when has Van Tam been hanging out on ‘the hood’? ‘Running hot’? I don’t think that means what he thinks it means. First, it appears to be a US expression in origin. Makes me wonder if it is a phrase that maybe Bill Gates used on his recent visit here. Did Van Tam misunderstand the meaning and has actually now let slip what was actually said in behind the scenes discussions?
Note that he specifically says, and repeats, “we [my emphasis] are running hot” not that ‘the virus is running hot’. Did someone use this phrase (using “we”) within his earshot?

It’s OK, VT, I don’t think it’s over: I KNOW it never even started!
So within last couple of weeks 1 friend was a ‘case’ – positive LFT & PCR (had to test as a teacher) he was so NOT unwell says if he hadn’t tested he would never have known he was supposed to have covid! His wife had no symptoms but didn’t test, both of them AZ jabbed but refusing booster. Another couple friends of ours both unjabbed tested positive (again LFTs for work) but they didn’t bother to go for PCRs or report their friends as close contacts. Again barely unwell! Hubby & I don’t test whether or not we have the sniffles or feel a bit rubbish occasionally!
