Face Mask Hell

I’m still not over yesterday’s announcement that face coverings will become mandatory in shops from July 24th. Apart from everything else, the only coverings the Government is insisting on are cloth ones, which every man and his dog knows are COMPLETELY USELESS. As Allison Pearson says in her excellent comment piece in today’s Telegraph, “anything other than tight-fitting, surgical-grade masks are utterly pointless – like trying to stop a bullet with a chain-link fence”. I mean, the evidence that the gold-standard N95 masks are effective in non-healthcare settings is threadbare at best – and they have to be disposed of after a single use. There is literally no evidence that re-usable cloth masks are effective in community settings. None. It’s like wearing a tin foil hat in case you get struck by lightening – an ineffective way to protect yourself from an almost non-existent risk. What has become of us?
I was busy trying to debunk this nonsense yesterday, doing an interview on TalkRadio with Mark Dolan and Iain Dale on LBC, and writing a piece for the Telegraph entitled “Mandatory masks are a matter of politics, not public health“.
Face nappies were not the main focus of my ire in that article, but the absurd report by the Academy of Medical Sciences that just happened to be published on exactly the same day the Government announced it would be making masks mandatory.
It cannot be a coincidence that on the day the Government announces that face coverings in shops will be mandatory from 24 July, a group of scientists led by Sir Patrick Vallance has issued a dire warning about the risk of a ‘second wave’ unless we “get on top of things”.
According to this group of 37 scientists from the Academy of Medical Sciences, 119,000 people will die from COVID-19 in hospital this winter. In fact, the death toll could be even higher, they warn, because they haven’t factored in likely deaths in care homes. In the executive summary, the list of steps we need to take to “get on top of things” includes “wearing face coverings in settings where physical distancing is not possible”, i.e. shops. You don’t have to be David Icke to wonder if there are signs of collusion here.
Before getting into the shortcomings of this report, I allow that its 37 authors are probably right about one thing: the increase in demand for hospital care this winter resulting from all those patients turned away by the NHS this spring.
Hospitals suspended all surgery that wasn’t “essential” during the crisis – due to fears of “the surge” – which means that millions of scheduled operations have been cancelled in the last four months, as well as screening programmes and outpatient care. Consequently, the NHS will be dealing with a huge backlog of patients this winter as a result of unnecessarily turning all those people away this spring. The Academy of Medical Sciences predicts hospital waiting lists could increase from 4.2 million to 10 million by the end of the year.
The rest of the report, though, is the usual scaremongering balls. For one thing, the scientists assume that between 90 and 95% of the UK population hasn’t yet been exposed to the virus, based on the ONS’s seroprevalence surveys. But as I was at pains to point out in my exchange with Dr Adam Rutherford on Monday, just because a person has no detectable IgG antibodies doesn’t mean they haven’t come into contact with SARS-CoV-2 or, if they haven’t, that they’ll be completely defenceless when they are. In other words, the boffins haven’t taken account of T-cell mediated immunity, which significantly lowers the percentage of the population that’s still vulnerable to the disease. Indeed, we may have achieved herd immunity by the time winter is upon us. (Australia is doing pretty well, in spite of it being winter there.)
Then there’s the fact that the authors of the report have over-estimated the infection fatality rate, which they put at 1.1%. The CDC’s recent “best estimate” was a quarter of that, and it will likely fall even further.
And finally, Sir Patric Vallance’s merry men have inserted a ludicrously pessimistic assumption about the infection fatality rate in the absence of the soul-destroying precautions they’re urging us to take, such as wearing face nappies in supermarkets.
The scientists’ “reasonable worst case scenario” assumes the reproduction rate of the virus, absent special measures, will be 1.7, meaning that 10 people that are infectious with COVID-19 will go on to infect a further 17. But according to Professor Carl Heneghan and others, the R number had fallen to below one in the week leading up to the full lockdown on March 23 because the more modest social distancing measures that had been introduced already, which did not include mandatory face coverings, were effective. So why have these 37 experts assumed that the same more modest measures would mean the R number climbing to 1.7 this winter?
My conclusion is that these “experts” are a group of tame lapdogs doing the bidding of their political masters.
I’m afraid that this report looks suspiciously like a propaganda exercise to try and make compulsory face nappies appear more reasonable. The scientists are right about the stress that’s likely to be placed on the NHS this winter from the backlog of patients who weren’t able to access hospital care this spring. But they would do well to remember that the reason those patients were turned away was because of apocalyptic predictions about the “surge” in demand for critical care that turned out to be wildly inaccurate. Let’s not repeat that mistake.
But I regret to say I missed something which a lecturer in mechanical engineering has flagged up to me. Which is that the report’s authors haven’t created their own model, but have relied on the notoriously flawed Imperial College model. Yup, their 119,000 number has been spat out by the same gimcrack computer model held together with sellotape and chewing gum that produced the 510,000 figure back in March.
My eagle-eyed informant writes:
Ignoring appropriate academic practice, the report’s authors are not transparent about how the modelling was carried out. Following up references 42 and 46 on p.12 reveals that it is the Imperial College model, and Ferguson appears in the acknowledgements. A casual reader might assume that the report team did the modelling. They are claiming that “The modelling estimates 119,900… hospital deaths between September 2020 and June 2021” . Have these people learned nothing? Prediction 510k (or 250k, depending), 45k actual (for “with covid” deaths). To suggest that the number of deaths likely to occur is nearly three times greater than shoving the infectious elderly back into care homes is unfathomable. I assume that hospitals will not be repeating that calamity.
Sartre famously said “hell is other people”, but I think I can improve on that. Hell is exactly the same people being wheeled out to provide cover every time the Government wants to take away another of our liberties.
Stop Press: I will keep you posted about the below, spotted on Twitter earlier.

Sceptic of the Week

One voice spoke for the nation in the House of Commons yesterday – or, rather, that tiny part of it that is sceptical. And that man was Sir Desmond Swayne, Conservative MP for New Forest West.
“Nothing would make me less likely to go shopping, than the thought of having to mask up!” he bellowed across the chamber when Matt Hancock made his announcement.
I’ll leave it to Michael Deacon, the Telegraph‘s parliamentary sketch writer, to tell the rest.
He was aflame with indignation. It was quite out of character. Normally in the Commons Sir Desmond prides himself on his calm concision, challenging himself to ask questions in the fewest words possible. His record is believed to be three, which he set in May 2018 following a promise by the then Transport Secretary to pursue a “digital railway strategy”. Sir Desmond’s question, in full, was: “What is it?”
Here, however, he was so enraged that he flung brevity to the wind. This was no time for holding back. An Englishman’s face, after all, was his castle.
“Was this consultation with the police force,” he fumed, “and in particular with the chief constable of Hampshire? For it is she who will have to enforce this monstrous imposition” – he spat out this phrase as if it were a maggot in a mouthful of apple – “this monstrous imposition against myself, and a number of outraged and reluctant constituents!”
Competition to Find Best Riposte to Crazy Masked Lady
A reader has been in touch with an interesting brain teaser:
I’ve just received a stern telling off for not wearing a mask on the tube by a crazy masked lady with a posh voice telling me she’s lost six (I tell you six!) family members to the “virus”. I must admit I was left a bit lost for words but obviously still mask free. What should my response have been?!
Please email your answers to me here. I’ll publish the best tomorrow.
No Mask Enforcement in Supermarkets

Got an encouraging message from a reader who works for a high street supermarket chain.
This morning (14/07) we were told that employees would not be expected to wear face coverings, but customers would. However, we should also wait for further advice from head office.
This afternoon, further advice came. The present position is that we have been told “under no circumstances to try and enforce this rule on customers and put ourselves at risk”.
I think everyone should be encouraged that enforcement may not occur at all. Certainly, most of my colleagues have said they won’t be wearing one.
One in the Eye for Pravda

Good spot from regular Lockdown Sceptics contributor Guy de la Bédoyère yesterday morning:
The BBC’s self-appointed role as the Government’s Pravda slightly backfired this morning when Naga Munchetty interviewed the virologist Professor Jonathan Ball of the University of Nottingham at about half past eight. Her opening, loaded and leading, question was: “Can you explain why (her emphasis) it is important that face coverings are worn in particular environments such as shops and public transport?”
Ball obligingly explained the theory but went on… “the reality is that we know face coverings trap large droplets and therefore if somebody coughs or sneezes it will reduce the chances of them spreading those droplets but unfortunately when people go about their daily lives they often touch those masks; if they are infected they’ll contaminate their hands and they’ll go on to contaminate surfaces so I think that it’s very important everybody understands that the evidence for mask wearing isn’t great but also it may come with hidden risks that they may help spread the virus.”
As ever the Government trope that somehow scientific opinion is a unitary force was exposed once more as nonsense. So now we face 100 quid fines for wearing things that might, in one scientist’s view at least, actually have the potential to extend the virus’s reach.
What’s next then? Street corner marshalls accosting shoppers to inspect masks and how often they’ve been cleaned? Hazmat suits? Why not just dynamite every high street in the country to protect people from shops altogether?
Round-Up
And on to the round-up of all the stories I’ve noticed, or which have been been brought to my attention, in the last 24 hours:
- ‘Compulsory face masks are proof the British bulldog has become the scaredy-cat of Europe‘ – Allison Pearson on top form in the Telegraph
- ‘First masks were useless, now they’re compulsory – Boris might as well stop “following the science” and start tossing a coin for all the sense he makes‘ – Good jeremiad by Janet Street-Porter in the Daily Mail
- ‘Face Masks Pose Serious Risks To Healthy Individuals‘ – A neurosurgeon spells out the dangers of face nappies in Principia Scientific
- ‘Masks Are Neither Effective Nor Safe: A Summary Of The Science‘ – Good summary of the evidence, or lack of it, concerning face coverings in Technocracy News and Trends
- ‘This ludicrous mask decision shows this is a Government driven by fear‘ – Strong piece by Philip Johnston in the Telegraph
- ‘The problem with face masks is moral, not medical‘ – Lively piece in the Article by Sean Walsh
- ‘Face masks in all public places under consideration‘ – Of course they are. Looking forward to reading the Academy of Medical Sciences on why this is essential to prevent [checks notes] a gazillion deaths
- ‘The Science and Law of Refusing to Wear Masks: Texts and Arguments in Support of Civil Disobedience‘ – Useful compendium of the law around face masks and what you’re legally permitted to do – or, rather, not do
Small Businesses That Have Re-Opened
A few weeks ago, Lockdown Sceptics launched a searchable directory of open businesses across the UK. The idea is to celebrate those retail and hospitality businesses that have re-opened, as well as help people find out what has opened in their area. But we need your help to build it, so we’ve created a form you can fill out to tell us about those businesses that have opened near you. Now that non-essential shops have re-opened – or most of them, anyway – we’re now focusing on pubs, bars, clubs and restaurants, as well as other social venues. As of July 4th, many of them have re-opened too, but not all. Please visit the page and let us know about those brave folk who are doing their bit to get our country back on its feet – particularly if they’re not insisting on face masks! Don’t worry if your entries don’t show up immediately – we need to approve them once you’ve entered the data.
Note to the Good Folks Below the Line
I enjoy reading all your comments and I’m glad I’ve created a “safe space” for lockdown sceptics to share their frustrations and keep each other’s spirits up. But please don’t copy and paste whole articles from papers that are behind paywalls in the comments. I work for some of those papers and if they don’t charge for premium content they won’t survive.
I know it becomes difficult to navigate the comment threads after 24 hours. One alternative to continuing to post below my updates is to move to the forum on Lockdown Truth. The creator of that site has extended a warm welcome to everyone here (and he’s launching a crowdfunder to mount a legal challenge against the face mask edict which you can read about here).
Shameless Begging Bit
Thanks as always to those of you who made a donation in the last 48 hours to pay for the upkeep of this site. It usually takes me several hours to do these updates, which doesn’t leave much time for other work. If you feel like donating, however small the amount, please click here. And if you want to flag up any stories or links I should include in future updates, email me here. I’ll try and get another update done soon.
And Finally…

For those miscreants who haven’t yet subscribed, here’s a link to the latest episode of London Calling, mine and James Delingpole’s weekly podcast. This week we discuss Prince Harry’s hostage video, my looming holiday in Italy and the horror – the absolute horror! – of mandatory face masks.

Let’s take the farce (sic) masks to their illogical conclusion. If the cowards in gummint insist on them being worn everywhere then it stands to reason all photo ID will require the holder to be wearing a mask because that is how the wearer is identified. You can’t demand the wearer take the mask off to match any photo without a mask as firstly that is somebody “different” and secondly doing so may “kill grandma” by spreading disease. Nope, all passports, driver licences and military ID will have to have photos with the holders wearing masks. Should make identification so much better and easier.
I live in the borough of Blackburn with Darwen. 40 cases per 100000 people and somehow its headline news.
Anyway, here is a link to the measures that the director of public health is recommending.
https://theshuttle.org.uk/introducing-new-local-measures-to-control-virus-spread/
This is from measure number 3 – Greeting and embracing:
“Rather than give handshakes or a hug, we’re asking people to only bump elbows with anyone outside of their immediate family. If we all do it, no one will be offended or think we’re being rude!”
(The last exclamation mark is part of the exert – it has not been added by me)
Bump elbows? The country has officially gone mad.
The majority in masks will be using the same one each time, pushed into their pocket to drag out when necessary, we’ll probably see spikes of all sorts just from that
My heavy duty plastic Darth Vader mask is more effective than most. And it looks much better.
My husband, a retired fire officer, has said he is going to wear his fire helmet 😄
Wear it wherever you go: bus, tube, high street, shops, bistros, cafés, kebab houses. That should freak out a few people. I propose that all of us create logos and designs from album covers, book illustrations, famous phrases that inspire you, or anything else that expresses the human spirit for liberty and joy, and put them on our masks as a sign of protest. When they are of no more use, collect them all and send them in boxes to the PM, Parliament, etc. With a smiley face on the top of the box.
Sadly I have already had to unfriend several friends and leave several groups on Facebook because I have been verbally bullied, abused and sworn at because I have said I cannot wear a face mask for very personal health reasons. What will happen if I try to go shopping? My second lockdown has already begun – and for the first time there were no reported deaths in English hospitals. I despair
Yes, it’s like that for a lot of us. I will never wear a mask.
Just as Ricky Gervais said, just because you’re offended, doesnt mean you’re right. What is it with people now that they can take the moral high ground like this. Masks are breeding grounds for germs, hospital staff change them regularly, people are going to use the same germ filled rag.
It’s like the scene in Watership Down when the Sandleford warren is getting filled in and all the rabbits are tearing at each other trying to escape.
I imagine some, if not most, of these people abusing you want this hell to end as soon as possible and see you and anybody else not complying as an obstacle.
These people are not friends…bin them off.
So where is the specification for these masks we’re supposed to be wearing? Could it be made of netting with holes an inch in diameter? The assumption seems to be that a mask is a mask. Well, why not make a ‘mask’ that maximises ventilation?
The mesh that tights are made of is mainly air. You could put a fabric border around the edge of a piece of near transparent nylon mesh and call it a mask. Unfortunately, mask nazis might spot that you’re not complying with their wishes.
Maybe a slightly denser mesh might look OK while allowing a good flow of fresh air.
Or maybe you could make a mask based on a ‘former’ made of a foam rubber lattice something like this:

And then cover it in a finer mesh like the material tights are made of.
The idea is that the tights material on its own would look unconvincing as a mask, but over the foam rubber lattice would look more substantial. A layer of tights material over the front and back of the lattice might combine to look more or less opaque, while providing maximum ventilation without falling foul of the muzzle nazis.
this is what i will wear

or maybe this .. with the advantage of also preventing sexually transmitted diseases
haha…this thought had already crossed my mind
Just a thought – the site is working badly, so I doubt I can find the right thread.
If a shop requires a medical letter as proof of exemption (which they have no right to ask for) I’m fairly sure you could print out for yourself a spurious letter with a spurious letterhead, with a suitably illegible signature and in the vanishingly unlikely circumstance that you were challenged and held to account, it wouldn’t be criminal, because the supermarket (eg) would have no right to demand it if you in the first place.
You could just say you have a health condition and if they are still obnoxious, tell them to stick their shop, plenty more
Agree, and it’s not for me – my plan is to brazen it out. But a few people have said that their supermarkets have told them that they can come in with no mask as long as they have a letter. So make yourself a letter.
This article sets out the worldwide COVID template which it seems the UK reluctantly “agreed” to implement…the vision of the post-COVID world is quite chilling and inhuman. We need to ensure it doesn’t happen.

Social distancing is here to stay for much more than a few weeks. It will upend our way of life, in some ways forever.”

I’ve just posted on the Facebook page for my family’s convenience store that we will in no way be enforcing mandatory mask wearing, and staff will not wear muzzles ourselves.
It’s a relatively new page so we don’t get a lot of traffic, but the comments I did get were as follows:
“Thank you so much for considering your disabled customers, this is why I’ve preferred shopping with you guys anyway!”
“Thank you soooo much I have angina asthma and have a medical exemption card so I’ll be shopping for everything at your shop!!”
I’ll be putting a couple of posters up next week to broadcast to the public that all non-mask wearers are welcome, and any abuse directed towards this group could result in a permanent ban from our store.
As you can tell, we’re not in the business to accommodate bedwetters!
Thankyou, honestly. I just hope people in my local area are behaving like you.
where is your shop?
Yes, could be worth a day trip !
We should have a national list and invite shops to add their name
I know an NHS nurse is going doolally about c19. She is very experienced and works on a -serious- ward. She finds the whole roll out of faux safety measures hard to cope with. She was really bouyed by the sign in the newsagents saying “no masks – this is our shop our policy”. Good luck to you Scotty87 its a good move people will respect and remember.
Consider yourselves lucky! In Spain, in 12 of the 17 autonomous regions (including Andalucía and the Baleares islands; Canary islands not yet), masks are now mandatory indoors AND outdoors, yes, you’ve read it well, even when strolling on the beach.
Wow! Is there a time limit on this nonsense?
Only when people decide enough is enough – which could be some considerable time.
FFS! This isn’t going away is it?
Sorry! For those thinking of going to Baleares, I just checked and beaches and swimming-pools are still mask-free there (we don’t know for how long). No luck in Andalucía though.
I hope we can do something. There are groups against mask wearing in big cities like Madrid or Valencia. I live in a beautiful town on the Basque coast. We just managed to get some news (on Telegram) about a group holding a meeting on Sunday in a nearby town. We’ve got to fight this madness.
The basques have a decent track record for standing up for themselves. Just ask charlemagne.
Thanks!
Are they trying to make people lose any immunity so they have spikes in the winter, what is that all about!
I’m assuming outdoors includes exercise? Basically anything more strenuous than walking (and for some people including) is now effectively unlawful in Spain?
No, exercise is excluded.
This petition is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/315220
Genius but if it meant all over in 2-3 weeks, I am considering signing.
It’s actually a really good idea, but based on what is currently happening we know that after three weeks this Gov would enforce something else to keep wearing it forever and being tracked.
8 signatures, all from the same area!
I’d sign this because it has to be a piss take. Imagine if it got 100,000 signatures.

MSPs still prattling on like lunatics about anti-English protestors being racists. C19 lockdown border protest stunt was incubated in the words and actions of SNP leadership.

A remarkable point now that jpl publications now require registering. Getting Scottish news without giving details has become much more difficult during c19.
I’ve just been having a spat with a few people on Facebook (I know I should know better) about masks since I posted four (independent) studies disabusing their efficacy. Someone has posted this as refuting my assertions saying it is the latest research. As if that somehow invalidates what I posted.
https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2020/06/417906/still-confused-about-masks-heres-science-behind-how-face-masks-prevent?fbclid=IwAR3YopxenwJeX2Km8ZRfueXWtpGd4Hw2XQxqph3FtWq7sIK62XgQHhlBkWQ
I haven’t time to look at it now but on a perfunctory appraisal it seems to be CDC propaganda. anyone help out? I’m seriously outnumbered on Facebook. I can see me getting flattened (literally) by the cultural revolution when I go out without a face mask. There’s a whole lot of persecution going to be going on.
I think the line “ There are several strands of evidence supporting the efficacy of masks.” says enough.
The other line ‘We should have worn masks straight off the bat’ made me chuckle.
Bella, the whole article is bullshit you can pull it apart statement by statement. I’ll start from the start, but I haven’t time or energy to do the whole thing, I suspect:
“ The original CDC guidance partly was based on what was thought to be low disease prevalence earlier in the pandemic, said Chin-Hong.”
we have low prevalence now. Demonstrably so, from the test numbers.
“ “I think the biggest thing with COVID now that shapes all of this guidance on masks is that we can’t tell who’s infected,” said Chin-Hong. “You can’t look in a crowd and say, oh, that person should wear mask. There’s a lot of asymptomatic infection, so everybody has to wear a mask.””
Probable non sequitur. If you want to prove that a mask stops pre and asymptomatic transmission, you have to prove that a mask stops aerosol spread which nobody has.
“ One category of evidence comes from laboratory studies of respiratory droplets and the ability of various masks to block them. An experiment using high-speed video found that hundreds of droplets ranging from 20 to 500 micrometers were generated when saying a simple phrase, but that nearly all these droplets were blocked… Read more »
I thought so and thanks for doing the leg work for me. Right now I’m negotiating a mother in hospital. (Not Covid related, unless she dies of course.) I’m going to copy your refutation and have it at the bastards on FB. Thanks for speedy reply Matt, you’re a star.
No problem.
But actually, I’d add – show me the other example of a similarly sick man on a plane without a mask. How many of the closest 25 people to him were infected? Otherwise, this is no kind of evidence.
And also, most importantly, they’re assuming, you’re assuming and I’ve been assuming that getting infected with the bloody thing is necessarily a problem anyway. Which it rarely is. Grr
Anyone making reference to “the science”, as if such a concept exists, is an idiot. Nuf said!
This is not science . This is anectodotal stories ; about the level of gossip in a pub ..
” Two compelling case reports also suggest that masks can prevent transmission in high-risk scenarios, said Chin-Hong and Rutherford. In one case, a man flew from China to Toronto and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. He had a dry cough and wore a mask on the flight, and all 25 people closest to him on the flight tested negative for COVID-19. In another case, in late May, two hair stylists in Missouri had close contact with 140 clients while sick with COVID-19. Everyone wore a mask and none of the clients tested positive. ”
I posted this elsewhere but we can simply look at the league table for flu and pneumonia to see how countries perform with no influence from lockdowns of any kind, so therefore a relatively fair comparison between countries:
https://www.worldlifeexpectancy.com/cause-of-death/influenza-pneumonia/by-country/
Looking at (Another study looked at coronavirus deaths across 198 countries and found that those with cultural norms or government policies favoring mask-wearing had lower death rates.) in particular here.
Two points to note, we can’t tell from this the level of vaccination for countries nor the level of mask usage during flu season. But as a starting point we can see that many of the mask wearing countries don’t fare better than those that don’t wear masks.
Great article. Thanks. Really straightforward and explains the situation for us.
I’ve just had a quick look at PMQs from this morning bearable if you watch at double speed!

Dear Ms Milling, Dear Mr Elliot,
I would like to apply for the soon-to-be vacant position of leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party and Prime Minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I enclose my CV. As I am neither a Member of Parliament nor a member of the party, I realise that my appointment to this role might be unconventional, controversial and even unconstitutional, however, I hope you will consider my application in the light of the following:
– These restrictive selection criteria have not worked well for your party in selecting a leader for something over 40 years. Following a succession of incompetents, shysters and both well-meaning and ill-meaning failures, I would suggest it may be time to change the approach taken to the leadership selection
– It has in any case recently become clear that tradition and the preservation of a functioning constitution are not among the concerns of the party; and the values and opinions of the membership, still less so
My qualifications may also make me seem an unconventional candidate, but again, I would ask you to consider the possibility that a fresh approach may be in order.
– Although I do believe it… Read more »
That application has as much chance of being successful as do mandatory masks have of encouraging shoppers back to the high street! lol
Worth a try.
Ok the more I read, the more I’m sure Boris et al are SHITTING THEMSELVES about the fact the economy is down 18% or whatever it is (instead of the purported 5% or whatever it was).
The *best* thing we can do is carry on boycotting shops. As nearly and completely as possible, as well as anywhere else that enforces masks and socialist distancing. Eventually, when they’re on their frigging knees, they will get the message. Business is going to have to step up here. Capitalism is going to have to come into its own, bite the Conservative Gvt. (irony of ironies) that has strangled it into the floor in the arse, and save itself.
I still think they will be too scared to bring masks in anywhere else – especially the newly reopened pubs and restaurants, because they will KICK THE FUCK OFF if they know their takings will be further decimated by such a rule.
As I’ve said before the shops are easy pickuns – the bigger ones can afford to take the hit (and/or enforce the rule), and we ‘have’ to shop for food.
I would also encourage anyone who can work from home to continue to do so for as long as possible. For another year if we have to. Let’s bleed this government and all their supporters dry. Personally I have formally refused to consent to my company’s face nappy policy, citing lack of medical evidence and infringement of civil liberties as the main reasons.
YES! Let’s stay in lockdown!! :oD
Interesting development, huh. But honestly, I think you’re right.
Many companies have had to terminate the lease agreements for their offices, so working from home is the only option at the moment.
most of the big supermarkets have said its not up to them to enforce the mask
Have you got a list? I’d like to know where I’ll be welcome and where I won’t 🙂
Aldi, Asda, Sainsbury’s Tesco, Lidl, the wording is varied but generally saying its up to the police to enforce
Nice one thankyou. That’s all my locals then 🙂
(Glad I don’t have to ditch Lidl. I practically live in there)
Well I’m going to follow the advice of Dr Jenny Harries about face masks on Twitter,” its not advisable to wear one unless you have been advised to by a healthcare professional, people tend to leave them on and contaminate the face mask then wipe it over something”.
It is mesmerising this comment from Harris. Her performance in the early press conferences was one of back-flipping weasling which one might expect from a chief nurse in a thoroughly political environment. If not actually untruths spoken then the illustion of them to a casual bystander/intended nudge victim.
Yet here now stands her comment of sense. Jenny Harris and the Comment of Sense!
And Boris looks as if he is getting the answers he wants
Just seen a sycophantic interview with Melinda Gates on News at Ten.They also hinted there will be news about the vaccine on Monday.Mask wearing is all about maintaining the fear of a fast disappearing virus until the vaccine is ready
Yes it is. 100% correct. It is possible to imagine their plan can fail. Masks are absolute desperation. Can the fear be kept up until the new year? Personally I don’t think it can. Not to say the measures are not here to stay. But attitudes will shift.
3 weeks to flatten the curve. Good to keep in mind when listening to vaccine news.
What about the fear mongering manufactured local lockdowns.Another trick in the book
Yes, yes they have an amoury full of devices. Some we dont yet know.
How about a nice second wave or a wah~fer thin slice of bubontic plague found in China, or…
Can people be feared for long periods. I don’t think so. But then I don’t have physcology models being run in a back room of imperial college, so I can’t possibly know.
Someone asked earlier for more details about the March in London at the weekend against face masks. It will be in Trafalgar Square. More details on Twitter.

They know that people will have to go to shops for food etc., so they’ll put up with the mask.
Pubs, restaurants and cafes aren’t so essential and they know that enforcing masks there would destroy trade.
Health considerations don’t come into it. As DRW says above “It’s about the politicians trying to extricate themselves from terrible public policy by still keeping up appearances that this virus is still “suuuuuper serious, guys!”
This is incredible! How about our MPs who’ve mostly been home with their families for the last 4 months, actually show up and set a back-to-work example, never mind jollying off again on summer recess?
Boris Johnson will on Friday tell the nation it is time to get back to work after the Governor of the Bank of England said people’s “fear” of commuting was “holding back the recovery”.
The Prime Minister is concerned that the economy is recovering more slowly than had been hoped after most lockdown restrictions were lifted and wants people to return to their workplaces wherever it is safe to do so.
His worries were echoed by Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, who told Tory MPs on Wednesday that he was shocked by deserted city centres such as London’s.

Civil servants have been told to prepare to get back to their offices to set an example to the rest of the nation after ministers admitted that fewer than 10 people are working in some Whitehall buildings usually occupied by thousands.
How hypocritical!
“It’s easier to take people’s freedoms away than to give them back”
No shit, dickhead.
He’s reminding me more and more of the dormouse in Alice in wonderland.
I wish somebody would pour hot tea on his nose and shove him in a teapot.
“How about our MPs who’ve mostly been home with their families for the last 4 months, actually show up and set a back-to-work example,“
You’re expecting leadership from MPs? Where’s that downvote button…
The phrase “do as we say, not as we do,” has never been more fitting than it is for today’s MPs.
“wherever it is safe to do so”
This is a get-out clause for everyone, surely? How can anyone prove it is safe? The government have spent the last 4 months telling us that the virus is out there stalking the streets and have not changed the message at all so far as I can see, other than telling us that we’re all going to die this winter unless we wear masks.
Mixed messages rule – ok!
A study on the effectiveness of face masks (cloth vs 2 ply) in operating theatres from 2013.

Skip to page 3 for the results (and the easy to follow graphs).
In summary, after 2 hours of use there were more bacteria than without using a mask at all.
Nothing we didn’t know already but nice to see “the science” agreeing.
For what it’s worth, my view is that the mask edict is a sign of desperation from the Government. I strongly suspect that the initial decision to impose the ‘lockdown’ was taken in order to avoid the negative publicity that images of overwhelmed intensive care stations would have generated – perhaps to ‘save lives’ or ‘protect the NHS’, but principally to protect the Conservative Government from accusations of neglecting the NHS.
The PM must now be acutely aware that he and his Government have destroyed the economy and caused the deaths of thousands of people with their disastrous ‘lockdown’ policy, so the irrational Government actions that we are currently witnessing are presumably designed to distract us from that fact, and to provide some sort of justification for the original decision.
Correct
Yes, exactly! I’ve just been reading a load of articles about the announcment/run up to the announcement and their behaviour (plus Gove’s -unknowing or intentional?- rebellion) and I’m convinced they are karking it.
I also watched the footage of Handjob where someone said ‘he looks like he’s gonna cry’ and my god, he does. He really does. He’s panicking.
I hope this mask march this weekend really shits them up. I hope they crap themselves in their beds. Not scared of covid, oh no. Scared of the people.
Better the government fears the people than the people fear the government.
There’s something good in your thought Nick. Governments should always fear the people.
That would hold more water for me if we were the only country insisting on masks, but we’re not, so I see this as coordinated. Following your logic then all these countries are desperate but I just don’t see it. I want to share your view, I really do, but this seems to be measured. Mason Mills (who some reckon is D. Cummings) was posting on Twitter back in the spring that masks would be a good Christmas present this year. This was always part of the strategy I fear. If they relax the mask wearing rule before the end of the summer DJ (say August Bank Holiday) I will stand you a very decent bottle of red. (Or white if you prefer.)
Bella it is coordinated. Have a look at masks4all and masks4all.org.uk. Lobby groups for masks but look at the make up of the groups. The UK group recommends that people don’t go outside unless they have to and when they do, they wear a mask at all times. You really do have to ask what the hell is going on…..

She certainly calls out the virtue signallers!
What we desperately need is a “compared to seasonal flu” index.
If masks are required in shops, then what is the risk reduction “compared to seasonal flu”? If patients have been dying in hospitals because of a lack of PPE, then how is the use of PPE “compared to seasonal flu”? If care homes were failing to protect patients, then what is their fatality rate “compared to seasonal flu”?
At the moment, the BBC is trying to blame absolute death rates on the Conservatives. But, if this were true, then presumably all previous governments were responsible for the death rates “from seasonal flu”.
Masks will be shifted from covid apparel to flu fashion. In the NewLogic it’s not possible to see flu as anything other than an equal to the covid foe. When the timing is right flu deaths will be pointed too and the rationale issued that it’s very good sense, nod nod, that masks are worn for seasonal influenza. A hunch.
Just as an aside, noticed a lot of new names in the posts. Our community is growing and that makes me happy.
I’ve noticed the same over the last few days, it’s good to see.
I subscribe to Conservative Woman and have noted a lot of new posters there too but they seem to be there to insult and criticize anti Covid related articles and comments. Seems too much of a coincidence to be anything other than orchestrated
Great comment on this reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/LockdownSkepticism/comments/hrro3s/covid_appears_done_in_sweden/
nobody will ever admit they were wrong.
This is at the heart of the mask issue.
Masks are not really about changing the course of the pandemic at this point, it’s about saving face. It’s about the politicians trying to extricate themselves from terrible public policy by still keeping up appearances that this virus is still “suuuuuper serious, guys!”
If they just declare, “Nah, it’s fine, we got it wrong, everything goes back to normal today,” people would be livid that we did this shit at all. They would feel deceived. Masks in July are a way of making people think the initial lockdown in March was justified.
And, I suspect, that the forced mass vaccination will be too.
Problem is that when no 2nd wave comes they will claim it was due to lockdown and the masks and 100s of thousands would have died without these measures. The other problem is that most will believe them. I dispair for this country and the future for my children if we stay. House on the market and as soon as it sells, we are out of here.
Exactly. Am telling as many people as possible that all of it is trying to cover up three huge and massively costly errors. 1) Moving elderly frail patients out of hospitals into Care Homes ii) Following nonsense ‘science’ and implementing lockdown and iii) closing schools. Now they want to take the glory for avoiding a ‘second wave’. Scandalous, but at least I know what the bastards are up to.
Exactly, the more they scrabble about trying to create the illusion of having “beaten” the disease, the more confident I am that we won’t see a second wave of virus, in this country, in the autumn. That so many countries that locked down hard and early are now experiencing their first wave of covid, exactly as Professor Geisecke said would happen, endorses my confidence.
Boris will already be gearing up to claim the saving of 120,000 lives by the end of winter…
Banks are corona-cool too by the way. Good to ‘stay aware’ of this and ‘save lives’ as you do.
Blatantly because they don’t want masked people to rob them.
Yes, I think I’ll be having my coffee & sandwiches there from now on!
Maybe there’s a typo in Revelation, and it should be the Mask of the Beast, and not the Mark of the Beast.
Although a mask is a type of mark in a way. It’s what it represents that counts. It’s a symbol of submission – to one world totalitarian government. A pernicious system of government that is attempting to muzzle all mankind and rob it of its humanity.
This mark will eventually be required to survive. It will be required to buy and sell, including food.
The leaders in charge are puppets who may or may not be aware of what they’re doing. We are at the end of the curve. We have been shopping in supermarkets for weeks without masks. All this talk of a second wave is just an excuse. A smokescreen.
I’m going to make a prediction, and will put my hands up and admit I was wrong if I turn out to be wrong: If I’m wrong you can call me a crackpot! My prediction is this:
The government will make it mandatory to wear a mask outside. In other words, whenever you leave your house.
Watch this space.
(I will never wear a mask).
Gosh, I do sound like a crackpot, lol. But I will never wear a mask!
I’m pretty sure I read somewhere earlier that a council in Blackburn has beaten you to it and is requiring masks in all public places in their area… Outside and in, I take that to mean?
I think caught the end of an interview on Talk Radio between councillor from Blackburn & Darwin council, I wondered what the full story was.
They won’t. Will they try?….. Ooooh. Unsure.
I don’t think they will succeed, because I think that would be the last straw for a lot of people.
I admit looking back at my post now it sounds utterly insane. A ridiculous assertion! Better wait and see I suppose. Or make plans to leave the country…
After the madness of the past few months you sound positively sane.Spain and Belgium have mandated masks in public that I know of .
I hope you are wrong.. but the way things are going it is a strong possibility.
I don’t see how easily this could be policed given both the shops and police are saying neither of them can enforce masks in shops. Really hoping this doesn’t happen.
Yes. Well it won’t make me wear a mask anyway :-).
I will shop where I can get in without being muzzled, and I will let the shop I spend my cash in know why I am supporting them.
Shops can refuse entry. Humberside police have said today they cannot enforce masks in shops.
