Time to Hit Pause on Net Zero
2 September 2022
There's a reason that electricity costs twice as much in Britain as in the USA, says Dr. John Fernley. It's because of brainless plans like Ed Miliband's to power us with a sun that doesn't shine when we need it most.
Thanks to Net Zero, the U.K. has some of the highest electricity prices in the world, paying more than five times as much as China and twice as much as the U.S., says Dr. John Fernley. And it's getting worse.
Liz Truss has appointed to conduct a 'review' of Net Zero policy she promised during the leadership campaign one of the people, Chris Skidmore, who created the current policy, indicating no plans for change.
With no viable plan for days when there's no sun or wind, and the need for energy security more obvious than ever, it's time to hit pause on Net Zero.
Let us hope the next Prime Minister will abandon Boris's Net Zero zealotry and instead adopt a more balanced policy, mindful of the limits of models and the fact that Britain only emits 1% of the world's CO2.
Before COP26, the UK announced a ban on new petrol and diesel cars in 2030, hoping to inspire others. But no other country went along with inflicting this policy on its population. It's not hard to see why.
There are clear reasons for the UK, which produces just 1% of global CO2 emissions, to pedal slowly to Net Zero. But with most scientists supporting AGW it is not realistic to expect governments to abandon it altogether.
Whilst the terrible events unfolding in Ukraine have led to calls by some politicians for a slowdown in the timetable for Net Zero there is little appetite for changing the direction of travel. Is the argument lost?
