Armed riot police in southern China have paraded four alleged violators of Covid rules through the streets. MailOnline has more.
Four masked suspects in hazmat suits – carrying placards displaying their photos and names – were paraded Tuesday in front of a large crowd in Guangxi region’s Jingxi City.
Photos of the event showed each suspect held by two police officers – wearing face shields, masks and hazmat suits – and surrounded by a circle of police in riot gear, some holding guns.
The public shaming was part of disciplinary measures announced by the local government in August to punish those breaking health rules.
China banned such public shaming of criminal suspects in 2010 after decades of campaigning by human rights activists, but the practice has resurfaced as local governments struggle to enforce the national zero-Covid policy.
It comes as locked-down residents in one of China’s biggest cities say they are at risk of starving in their homes after they were banned from going outside even to buy food under harsh new Covid measures sparked by just a few dozen cases.
Apparatchiks running the city of Xi’an on Monday told 13 million people they are only allowed out of their homes when invited to take part in a new round of mass testing, or for medical emergencies.

Again, there’s some comforting news from Germany.
In a city where obligatory FFP2 masks were mandated a week ago (medical masks no longer good enough after 1 year?), I watched in dismay how everybody (both staff and customers) rushed to comply with this new level of lunacy.
But yesterday I went grocery shopping at night… and surprise, surprise, found the entire young staff unmasked and chatting together relaxedly in the checkout area. So at least now I know that “my” grocery shopping place is run by normal people who are forced into pretending – not by faithful covidians.
And I hear some fireworks popping outside. German government has once again outlawed sales of fireworks this year. A great idea – it will be so much more enjoyable to listen to them on NYE.

Buried deep down in the Daily Mail article is the answer to the question of what the people subjected to this humiliation in Jingxi are actually accused of.
They have been accused of transporting illegal migrants, presumably – given Jingxi’s location – from Vietnam.
There can’t have been a generalised lockdown in Jingxi at the time of the humiliation ritual, because otherwise there wouldn’t have been a large crowd.
In Xi’an there is a generalised lockdown. People aren’t allowed out even to buy food. Quite possibly the authorities are trying to cause mass starvation. The year of the metal ox, which arrives every 60 years, isn’t over yet. There was mass starvation in 1960-61. Tens of millions starved. That was during the period that the government called the “Great Leap Forward”.
