The Telegraph splashed last week that Sinn Féin intends to work with the SNP and Plaid Cymru to “break up the UK”. Cue the usual outbreak of pearl-clutching from Westminster, where people who cannot run a railway timetable suddenly speak as if they are Metternich preserving the Congress of Vienna.
But perhaps we should all calm down and ask an awkward question.
What if they’re right? Not morally right. Not romantically right. Not Braveheart right. But economically, culturally and politically right.
Because here is the increasingly obvious reality. The United Kingdom no longer behaves like a unified nation-state. It behaves like an exhausted multinational holding company, held together by inertia, nostalgia, transfer payments and the BBC weather map.
Scotland increasingly votes as if it is a Nordic social democracy trapped against its will in Thatcher’s ghost. Wales leans permanently towards public sector socialism. Northern Ireland is basically a theological argument attached to a motorway network. Meanwhile England generates most of the tax revenue and carries most of the economic weight – then gets told by its own governing class that expressing the slightest English self-interest is somehow vulgar and racist.
England now feels like the chap paying alimony to three ex-wives who all say he was useless.
The economic numbers are revealing. England already accounts for roughly 85% of UK GDP. Strip away Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and England would still possess an economy of around $3.5 trillion to $3.7 trillion. That would leave it roughly the size of France and still among the seven or eight largest economies on Earth.
More importantly, England’s GDP per head would remain among the richest major nations in the world. London would still be London. One of the planet’s dominant financial capitals, legal centres and cultural magnets. The Bank of England would remain. The City would remain. Most corporate headquarters would remain. Heathrow would not suddenly drift into the North Sea.
In fact, England’s fiscal position might improve. This is the part we are apparently not supposed to say aloud.
Public spending per head is already significantly higher in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland than in England. England effectively acts as the Union’s economic engine room while simultaneously being lectured about its alleged selfishness by political elites whose budgets depend upon English taxpayers.
The much-discussed Barnett Formula has long functioned as a mechanism by which England subsidises devolved administrations that often define themselves politically in opposition to England itself.
Now those same administrations increasingly wish to leave anyway. Fine. Let them.
The standard counterargument arrives immediately. ‘But Brexit damaged the economy!’
Possibly. The economic breathlessness of Covid not withstanding, economists continue to debate whether Brexit increased frictional trade costs with Europe and reduced investment.
But there is an enormous difference between leaving a continental trading bloc of 450 million people and ending a dysfunctional constitutional arrangement inside one sovereign island where 84% of the UK population live.
England would still trade heavily with Scotland and Wales because geography exists. The Welsh economy is unlikely to declare holy war on English tourism and second-home owners simultaneously. Scotland leaving the Union would not suddenly turn Carlisle into North Korea. A United Ireland will still sell Guiness to us, just as the French still sell wine to Britain despite spending half their national existence despising us.
People trade with nearby prosperous neighbours. Switzerland trades with the EU. Norway trades with the EU. Britain traded with Europe long before Brussels invented itself.
Then comes the emotional argument. ‘But Britain is a great power!’
No. Britain was a great power. That distinction matters.
The political class still talks as though we are somewhere between Churchill and the Falklands Task Force. In reality we are a debt-heavy, ageing ailing state struggling to control borders, maintain infrastructure, police cities or build a runway without a judicial review and three diversity audits.
The UK increasingly resembles one of those stately homes open to the public. Impressive façade. Crumbling plumbing with bats in the belfry.
England, however, remains a potentially formidable country if it actually governed in its own interests.
Imagine an England outside the gravitational pull of perpetual constitutional management. Outside the endless need to subsidise competing nationalist projects. Outside the bizarre modern habit of treating English identity as faintly embarrassing.
Yes, perhaps eventually outside the ECHR as well. There. I said it.
One of the strangest features of modern Britain is that almost every serious conversation about borders, deportation, policing or migration eventually runs headfirst into supranational legal architecture that voters cannot alter.
Meanwhile the political class insists this represents ‘democracy’.
Holyrood has just elected a transgender Green MSP who is simultaneously applying to remain permanently in Britain while helping legislate for it. The same separatist movement demanding Scottish nationhood also champions border policies that render nationhood largely meaningless. You cannot build a serious country while treating borders, citizenship and national identity as optional social constructs. Nationalism without borders is rather like veganism with a side of brisket.
Only in modern Britain could someone arrive on a temporary visa, join a party that believes borders are essentially a colonial hate crime and women can have penises, then end up governing the country before his own long-term immigration status is fully settled.
An independent England could pursue a radically different model. Lower corporate taxes, a work not welfare culture, aggressive deregulation, serious infrastructure investment, controlled immigration weighted towards economic contribution, energy realism, faster planning approval and a legal framework rooted in Parliamentary sovereignty rather than permanent judicial activism.
In other words, an England run more like Singapore than Brussels.
Of course there are risks. Plenty.
The break-up of the Union would create disputes over debt allocation, military assets, Trident submarines and borders. Financial markets dislike uncertainty. Constitutional divorces are rarely tidy.
Yet we must also stop pretending the status quo is stable, any more than a state built increasingly upon managed grievance can produce genuine solidarity and national pride.
The United Kingdom is already fragmenting psychologically. Devolution created four political identities without preserving one shared patriotic identity strong enough to hold them together. Westminster now spends much of its time arbitrating internal resentments while simultaneously importing millions of people from cultures with little historical connection to Britain at all.
It is difficult to build solidarity in a country that increasingly resembles an airport terminal.
Perhaps the real question is not whether the UK can survive technically. Of course it can.
The real question is whether the Union still possesses enough shared cultural confidence, democratic trust and reciprocal loyalty to justify its continuation.
Increasingly, the answer appears to be no.
If Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland genuinely believe they would flourish independently, England should wish them well.
Cheerfully. Calmly. Amicably.
Then quietly get on with becoming the most economically and culturally dynamic country in Europe.

I think i agree. Ditch the Barnett formula and make Wales and Scotland raise taxes ans spend it themselvs
One in five of the Scottish electorate voted SNP. One in five of the English electorate voted Labour. It is no more “Scotland blaming Westminster” than it is “England letting in hordes of illegal immigrants”. The wishes of the Scottish administration are not the wishes of the Scottish people, any more than Westminster’s are the wishes of the English. We in Scotland are as repelled by the antics of our nationalist regional administration (not “Scottish Government”) as anyone in England is.
I am proudly Scottish and proudly British. With 10% of the UK population, Scotland supplied a remarkable share of the people who built modern Britain: five prime ministers, much of the imperial administration, the shock troops (with the casualty rolls to prove it) of our wars, and a great deal of the intellectual and industrial firepower behind Britain’s nineteenth-century pre-eminence. Britain’s contribution to the European Enlightenment was substantially a Scottish one.
This is not boasting and it is not Scottish exceptionalism. Nor does it deny the real grievances felt by people in England today, who have to endure a steady drip of nationalist grievance-mongering from north of the border. Most of what I have just described is in the… Read more »
There were riots on the streets of Edinburgh when the 1707 Acts of Union were signed binding Scotland to England. Only the elites wanted the Union, not the ordinary people of either country.
They were not “small minded”.
They were not “Little Englanders” or “Little Scotlanders”.
Oh my goodness. 1707 as the basis for the destruction of Great Britain in 2027? We only stopped burning witches in 1727 and I think (hope?) we’d both agree that was pretty small minded. Times have changed.
But the Catholic Church continued to burn people at the stake until the 19th century:
“François-Jean de la Barre was the last person executed for blasphemy in France. He was executed at the age of 19 in 1766 for failing to doff his hat in front of a religious procession. He was tortured, beheaded and burnt with a copy of Voltaire’s Philosophical Dictionary nailed to his torso. Under pressure from the Catholic Church, a statue of La Barre erected in 1897 was removed.”
“The last known execution for blasphemy took place in Spain in 1826, when the clergymen of the Spanish Inquisition requested schoolteacher Cayetano Ripoll be burned at the stake. However, the civil authority chose to hang him instead. Ripoll had been accused of insulting the Catholic Church and its teachings, and of promoting atheism and radical ideas. The Church authorities, upset that Ripoll had not been burned at the stake, placed his body into a barrel, painted flames on the barrel and buried it in unconsecrated ground.”
Blasphemy and Christianity in Europe: A History of Persecution
Interesting. And are you claiming that in doing so they were being small minded, or that they were not being small minded? Or are you making some other point? If so – what would it be?
“People trade with nearby prosperous neighbours. Switzerland trades with the EU. Norway trades with the EU. Britain traded with Europe long before Brussels invented itself.” This is dangerously close to the gravity theory of economics which claims nations trade mainly with markets nearby and their economies converge.
But it is not so.
UK trades much more around the world than with the EU. Ditto Australia’s main trading partners are not Malaysia or Philippines.
A more pertinent question to me is, what exactly does Sinn Fein want, and why. A party committed to left wing ideologies and that hates borders and nations wants to bow its knee to old-time Irish nationalism and create that united and free nation they have been asking for for the last 800 years. Isn’t that in opposition to their core beliefs?
Or is it just taking a position on something they don’t believe they will get, so they can make a rallying point out of it?
Great article Clive. Thought provoking. Exactly what the Sceptic should be. Thanks.
The sooner England gets devolution and its own parliament the sooner this threat of Scotland, Wales and Sinn Feins breaking up the UK will end. Westminster can’t tell the devolved nations the facts of life or to say the least”sod off” but an English parliament could.
As an Englishman that has been living in Wales for over twenty years I say bring it on. The clowns that run Wales and many of the citizens firmly believe Wales can go it alone. I say let them.
But be prepared for mass immigration in to England from Wales when the penny drops and the Welsh realise they are focked.
I’ve kept enough money aside for my eventual return to my homeland and look forward to the introduction of tolls and passport checks on both bridges, only this time payment to get out of the country, and the rebuilding of Offa’s Dyke 😁.
Oh dear. I’ve been expecting this for years-the English have been incredibly tolerant of the nonsense coming from, in particular, Scotland.
Please be aware that it’s coming from a minority of loons in the SNP, with whom the rest of the country are stuck due to a flawed voting system.
Given better politicians in Westminster (it could happen) we can aim to be the prosperous, happy United Kingdom we had been for three hundred years.
There were riots on the streets of Edinburgh when the 1707 Acts of Union were signed binding Scotland to England. Only the elites wanted the Union, not the ordinary people of either country.
The Establishment doesn’t want to break up the Union.
But they DO want to break up England, basically into the regional “kingdoms” which existed before Alfred the Great, Edward the Elder and Athelstan united the country.
England is too powerful for them – particularly since the Brexit vote. The policy is Divide England and Rule – not break up the Union.
You’re right! They showed their hand in the Club of Rome map of 10 World Regions, like the Ten Kingdoms of Revelation:
Shortly after the Covid Tyranny I had a holiday in Wales.
I can assure you that, in my experience, they’re already carrying out a holy war against British tourists.
It could be that the Marxist Welsh government, like the Marxist Spanish government, is trying to drive all the tourists out in order to give all the tourist accommodation to the Third World Invaders = The Muslim Army being inserted into every corner of the West, awaiting the signal to attack the helpless, disarmed Ethnic European population.
Very thought provoking, especially as fracking and coal opportunities are in England. However have you thought about how we would control our borders to prevent benefit migrants once it plays out?
Don’t allow them access to any benefits. Sorted!
Sadly devolution would not make much difference, it would only speed up the demise of our nations. This is because our governments are Globalist, totalitarian Marxists and communists who are deliberately destroying our country. Advance, Restore and Reform are the only parties that appear to want to genuinely improve our country and economy. Any organisation that wants us to have open borders and implement Net Zero policies and be subjugated by the unelected EU is an enemy of our country.
Advance is a ridiculous vanity project by Yet Another Pakistani Wannabe Prime Minister. Reform is a Muslim-funded-&-controlled project with the same aim.
Only MP Rupert Lowe’s RESTORE BRITAIN genuinely wants to rescue the country.
Interesting theory, however, how exactly would these countrys survive without english tax?, yes they create their own, but they are also very heavily subsidised by we english, what would happen to their free prescriptions, uni places, bus passes, not having to sell their property for care home care, as we do?, and thats only a few things, its all good in theory, but not in practice, that said if they choose to go, I wish them well, Scotland however may well suffer, I mean its even elected someone who isnt legally in the country yet, hardly bodes well does it?.
I don’t care about any of that, it’s their problem.
Oh that’s easy, because it won’t be up to them to choose. England can issue a unilateral declaration of independence as a nation, independent of the UK, EU, UN, WEF, WHO and all other Globalist bodies.
Scotland can ask that Third World illegal clown to fund them with his parents’ money.
Agree wholeheartedly! The Defence question is easy to solve. Scotland allows England to continue using bases there in exchange for being defended!
An Independent Scotland would join the EU as soon as possible, an Independent Wales would almost certainly do the same. Would this make it harder for England to keep out illegal immigrants if they were able to get from one EU country into Scotland or Wales with freedom of movement then cross an open land border or would it be far too hard for them to get from France to Scotland or Wales?
If we don`t pay benefits then there would be no incentive to come. Given Wales and Scotland will maintain their “sanctuary” status and financial support to illegal immigrants then the only problem we would face is a refugee crisis comprising hardworking Scots and Welsh!
Am I missing something obvious here? I’m confused by “Scotland leaving the Union would not suddenly turn Carlisle into North Korea.” Carlisle is in England.
Yes, I was wondering about that, too, when I first read it, but then forgot it because the whole article had so many important points to make.
Thanks for reading – please see my response to Mark above.
Thanks for reading my column. The Carlisle reference refers to the time when Korea became two separate nations, with North Korea becoming a rogue totalitarian basket case. Carlisle need not do the same despite it’s proximity to a new Socialist National Republic of Scotland!
Aha! I thought perhaps you were alluding to Carlisle (like Berwick-upon-Tweed) having changed hands over the centuries.
Now I fully understand your allusion, I have to say that it contains a fatal flaw. South Korea is shielded by the DMZ. The Carlislians would have no such protection.
Thank you for taking the trouble to respond.
Protection from an independent Scotland run by the SNP? I’m not sure they would be much of a threat although maybe Mel Gibson could be persuaded to come out of retirement and mount a challenge? 🙂
The steel bonnets : the story of the Anglo-Scottish border reivers : Fraser, George MacDonald, 1925-2008 : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive Good read. 100 years of border agro between Tudors and Stuarts.
Well thought out article, which, nevertheless, raises some questions.
Will an independent England de-islamise Manchester? Birmingham, Bradford and Blackburn? Luton, Leicester and London?
Will an English Parliament stop immigration and definitely leave the ECtHR? (the author gives only a “perhaps” to this happening)
How about the King? Or, will there be four kings?
(if these questions are answered, there may be some more depending on the answers).
The Anglo-Saxons chose their own tribal chiefs by the Witenagemot, and they were later called kings. So the English could do the same.
“… leaving a continental trading bloc of 450 million people…”
Correction: protectionist, autarkical, highly regulated and taxed, customs union to prevent free trade.
It would be an advantage to English energy consumers to be able to tell the Scots to stick their hugely excessive wind generation and refuse to send them gas generation backup, which will be in short supply. They have unwisely closed their coal and nuclear stations. The energy guru who is Mad Ed’s right hand man is Chris Stark, who worked in Scotland to engineer their disaster and now he is doing the same thing in England.
The only thing not factored in is the reparations demanded from Wales, Scotland and Ireland for whatever the UN will buy into.
Godzilla Facepalm
While we’re at it: What have the Romans ever done for us?
Oh yes. The united kingdom has had its day for the simple reason it is no longer united.
For that you can thank Bliar and devolution as the first step to making GB a group of satellite states ruled by Europe.
i could get angry but there’s no point as unity is unrecoverable now, thanks to the dilution of the population with anyone from anywhere that wants a free ride for life.
England for the English who should have the right to decide who comes in and out.
as for Starmer not recognising the Britain on the streets on Saturday, I’m not surprised. He doesn’t recognise or represent the majority of British voters and only recognises his favoured “minority groups”; whilst busily creating new laws to make it illegal to upset Muslims.
Well said!
I’d suggest a Referendum to settle each of the proposed splits… but the Powers That Be are not keen on them and would work to undermine and weaken any results contrary to their fancy.
We should follow the excellent example of the Swiss, whose people have direct democracy in the form of multiple referendums and initiatives:
How Swiss direct democracy works – SWI swissinfo.ch
“No other country in the world holds as many popular initiatives as Switzerland.
The first votes took place more than 100 years ago, and to this day Swiss citizens are regularly called to the ballot box to decide on local, regional and national issues.”
“The popular initiative or people’s initiative gives Swiss citizens the opportunity to propose changes to the Constitution. They can initiate a vote by collecting and verifying at least 100,000 signatures from eligible voters within 18 months.”
Follow the Swiss. What an outstanding idea, they are economically powerful despite no natural resources.
Yes, and we should also follow their superb system of National Self-Defence, in which every Swiss man was required to keep a gun and ammunition in a locked cabinet at home, as part of his membership in his local militia, which trained on a regular basis, as every woman was part of an emergency support group, trained to provide food and first aid for the militias and the people. The children were also trained with emergency drills to help each other and their parents and adults, so that they knew exactly what to do and where to go to reach the mountain shelters, well-stocked with food and supplies in case of a national emergency, such as foreign attack.
This of course only worked in the past because the Swiss were Ethnic Europeans = White People, but the system is now ruined by the Mass Third World Invasion of Switzerland, as everywhere in the West. We should all remember what the Bible says: “Never let the enemy into the camp!”
Great article, but I suspect only the Northern Irish would go for it & only then, if Ireland would take them on….. which they’d be mad to do.
Scotland never managed to answer the question, “which currency?” And “who will fund our 12% deficit?”
Wales is a basket case.
“Take them on”??? Catholic Ireland has been trying to seize control of prosperous Protestant Northern Ireland for the whole of the past 100 years, ever since Northern Ireland VOTED TO LEAVE IRELAND and join the UK. The ridiculously-named “Troubles” were a War of Conquest waged by the Catholic Irish Republic against the UK, in defiance of the democratic will of the Northern Irish People.
Catholics in Northern Ireland can easily go to the Catholic Republic, but where can the Ulster Protestants go? It seems to me that the Protestants should either declare Ulster an independent Protestant state and send the Catholics back to the Catholic Republic, or all Irish Catholics in England should return to their Catholic Republic homeland and swap homes with the Ulster Protestants, who should be welcomed into England as genuine refugees, just as the French Huguenots were.
What do you think?
I think you don’t like the Catholics.
Well, I’m one of them, although from Eastern Europe.
No hard feelings though.
Yes, I know you are, as you have said previously. Most commenters on here seem to be either Catholic or atheist, and the quickest way to rile a Catholic is to mention the word they hate the most: “Protestant”.
But what do you think about a solution?
How would you solve the problem, if you had the power to do it?
I don’t have a clue.
I have never been to Northern Ireland, I don’t really understand the whole conflict.
But I think any Protestant-Catholic hostility only benefits the enemies of Christianity.
Believe me, I really don’t hate Protestants. My wife of 35 years was brought up as CofE, her parents were deeply involved in the Anglican Church – none of which mattered at all, either for them or for me. My mum is in a care home run by a Calvinist church and they look after her very well. I listen to a lot of Protestant bible scholars on YouTube and their understanding and insight is astonishing. I learn a lot from them. In fact, I am grateful to Protestants for their enormous contribution to my own faith. So seriously, no hard feelings. You don’t rile me.
Very interesting and thoughtful comment!
But of course you understand the Northern Ireland War, because it is analogous to Brexit, in which the majority of people voted one way, and the others colluded with a foreign power to delay and destroy the democratic majority vote.
The Brexit Foot-Dragging has lasted for 10 years.
The Northern Ireland Foot-Dragging has lasted for 100 years.
Good comment!
I’m a proddi married to a catholic, but she’s italian so it doesn’t count!
Oh well, that puts you in a good position to give your views, so if you don’t mind my asking, what would be your ideal solution to the problem, if you had the power to carry it out? I’ve read that even some British military staff are referring to it as “The Island of Ireland”, as if handing over Protestant Ulster were already a done deal.
But we could just as easily talk about “The Island of England” as an excuse to completely absorb Scotland and wipe it off the map. Or “The Island of Greek Cyprus” and wipe the Turkish side off the map. What would be your ideal solution to help the Ulster Protestants?
The people on both sides of the NI conflict and have much more in common than they like to admit. Their quarrel only benefits non Christians. In the long run, immigration and the mosque down the road are much more of a threat to their identity and religious freedom than squabbles over the routes that music bands may march on, or Gaelic being taught in schools. It’s time both sides woke up and started to work together. I think all other serious questions would solve themselves if they would do this. Including the question of sovereignty.
Really? Then let’s send Gerry Adams to tell Muslim Pakistan & Muslim Bangladesh that they really “have much more in common” with Hindu India, from which they were carved 70 years ago, “than they like to admit”.
He can tell them they need to “work together” with Hindu India to dissolve their two Muslim countries and re-unite “The Subcontinent of India” into one country again, ruled by Hindus. And “all other serious questions would solve themselves if they would do this”, as you said about Northern Ireland.
The best person to explain all this to them is Gerry Adams, don’t you think? Although it may take some time to persuade them, and he must stay there until he does, even if it takes 100 years. He can fund his mission out of the estimated £4.2 million pounds he was awarded as “compensation” for hurty feelings, because Diddums never expected to be punished for any of his heinous atrocities.
Speaking as a Northern Irish protestant (pensioner), it’s pretty clear to me that our destiny is demographic. Northern Ireland will be subsumed into a united Ireland, perhaps in my lifetime, it’s already halfway there under the Windsor agreement with the EU. There is no physical border and multiple laws are handed down from Brussels, eg no condensing tumble dryers can be bought here. The Brexit vote fractured many traditional political positions. There was a majority vote to remain, mostly catholics and upwardly mobile metropolitan elites both Catholic and Protestant who draw or will draw salaries and pensions from the disproportionately huge public sector, paid for by the mainland (there, I said it) GDP. Northern Ireland is too small and resource poor to exist on its own either without the vast cash inflow from GB. Ireland might be, it remains to be seen. Speaking as a leave voter, but watching the way the wind is blowing I am seriously considering selling up and using my right to an Irish passport (born on the island of Ireland) to move to Spain. I won’t agree with the politics there either, but the weather will be more pleasant. And my Leave vote? I voted… Read more »
Thank you for your invaluable viewpoint, and especially for mentioning the 36 Ulster Division of volunteers, which lost 31,186 men killed, wounded or missing during World War I.
“After the first day on the Somme, Captain Wilfred Spender of the Ulster Division’s HQ staff was quoted in the press as saying:
And yet they have NOT been fairly treated, but are being abandoned by successive UK governments to the Catholic IRA Terrorists.
The good friday agreement was the absolute epitome of snatching political defeat from the jaws of military victory.
Truly there is a lot of rotten at the heart of the british state.
You are absolutely spot on. The Good Friday Agreement and all the other agreements should be abolished, and the Faithful Ulster Protestants given the Protestant homeland they were promised, just as the Indian Muslims were given not only one, but two new countries carved out of India, to create specifically Muslim countries. No one is telling Pakistan & Bangladesh that they have no right to exist, and they were created only 70 years ago.
If Protestant Northern Ireland is forcibly swallowed up by the Catholic South, then Muslim Pakistan & Bangladesh must be given back to Hindu India.
We’ll send Gerry Adams to inform the Muslims that their countries will be dissolved, and see how he gets on…
Scotland never managed to answer the question, “which currency?”
I think at the ‘once in a generation’ independence referendum the SNP suggested that they would carry on using sterling if they won Independence. The question they didn’t answer was how using a currency they had no central bank influence over would affect their economy, such as it is.
The SNP also blithely raised the prospect of the newly independent Scotland splitting from a (then) EU member country being invited to join the EU more or less immediately, despite the EU strongly hinting they’d have to jump through quite a few hoops first.
I doubt that there is a majority in any of the three countries in favour of leaving. Where you could potentially find a majority is in England, in favour of an English parliament and giving much less money to the others, but that would be bitterly opposed by the other three and the political left in England.
All the more reason to do it! England, and in fact, every country in the world, would be better off without the Union, the EU, the UN, the WEF, WHO and every other supra-national organization. The Globalists want “A Borderless World” full of Global Slaves without any ethnic or tribal roots, so let’s create as many countries as we can. For example, every US state is similar or larger in size and wealth than most European countries, so they could all easily declare independence and make trade deals amongst themselves, since the federal government has proven to be hostile to their interests, by welcoming Third World Invaders and sending young American men to be killed and maimed in pointless foreign wars that bring NOTHING of benefit to the American states.
I would love to see it happen
Alberta is looking to leave Canada.
Oh brilliant! I hadn’t heard that— I hope they actually do it!
and Catalonia to leave Spain.
only Catalonian nationalists are overwhelmingly left wingers who play with nationalist rhetoric to garner support. A bit like Sinn Fein.
I have always been a unionist, but this article has helped me rethink that position.
From where are now English devolution is the only way forward.
I am in a similar position. If this ever comes to pass, which I doubt in my lifetime, I would feel sorry for those Welsh and Scottish cousins who don’t want to live in a socialist paradise – they should be granted asylum in England. Northern Ireland seems to me a separate question, perhaps best solved by redrawing the borders. The remaining population of NI might well want to remain part of “Britain”, and given the stalwart opposition that come from some of the Unionist MPs during “covid”, I would not be unhappy about that.
Yes, let them go.
It’s really getting tiring – Scotland blaming Westminster for every all of its problems.
Let them go.
See how they manage on their own.
But let’s have a clean split. We owe each other nothing. No more subsidies. No common currency.
As long as the national debt is distributed on ‘historic use’ lines – I wouldn’t, as an English taxpayer, want to be saddled with debt run up by the devolved assemblies.
And take back or remove all north sea oil and gas infrastructure paid for using English tax payer money, how is Scotland going to raise taxes then with no help from England? What is it going depend on for its bright independent future? thistles, whiskey, water and mountains!?
It’s planning on EU funding.
which is hysterical really because they don’t want to be governed (as they see it) by Westminster, but Brussels that’s fine.
Well, presumably all income tax, VAT, petrol duty, etc. that is currently paid to HMRC would then go to the devolved nations, plus the nations already have tax-raising powers, so their citizens would end up with the bill.
Of course, this would work both ways as taxpayers in the devolved nations would no longer be paying into the national pot, so English taxpayers would see an increase in their bills too to cover the lack of Welsh, Scottish or NI taxpayers’ funds.
Wow! Hats off to Clive Pinder for telling the truth, so courageously!
I never thought I would ever read such an article as his!
Please take note, England and the world.
Some of his brilliant observations to remember:
“England now feels like the chap paying alimony to three ex-wives who all say he was useless.”
“The UK increasingly resembles one of those stately homes open to the public. Impressive façade. Crumbling plumbing with bats in the belfry.”
“It is difficult to build solidarity in a country that increasingly resembles an airport terminal.”
“Nationalism without borders is rather like veganism with a side of brisket.”
We’d have to rebuild Hadrian’s wall and Offa’s dyke.
What will be the transitional arrangements for migration?
Will visas be required?
On separation will we be once again allowed to tell jokes based on racial origin: “An Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman walk into a bar …. “
…and the barman says: “Is this a joke?”.
If we do separate, they need to understand they must stand on their own financially, and Scotland cannot claim all North Sea Oil belongs to them, assuming we ever get someone in charge who is not a blithering idiot and refuses to use the resources we are so fortunate to possess.
I bet Japan (and others) would love to have the resources we have, but refuse to make use of!
