Sadiq Khan looks set to become the country’s best-paid politician after being handed a peerage.
The London Mayor was installed in the House of Lords by Keir Starmer in one of his last acts as PM.
But there is anger at the prospect he could benefit from a loophole in rules around ‘double-jobbing’.
Sir Sadiq would see his £170,000 mayoral pay slashed by two-thirds if he took a salary in the Commons or the Lords.
However, he can claim the £390 tax-free daily allowance for attending sittings of the Upper House without any reduction in his other pay.
With the Lords typically sitting for around 150 days a year, that could mean boosting his income by £58,500.
As the extra cash is not subject to tax or national insurance, he would need to be on a salary of roughly £280,000 to take home the equivalent of his allowances and mayoral pay combined.
In contrast, the Prime Minister’s salary – including pay as an MP – is just over £174,000.
A spokesman for Sir Sadiq did not deny that he would claim the per diem allowance.
“The Mayor’s time will still be devoted to carrying out his role as Mayor of London, including attending all the same meetings and events as he does now, and fulfilling all of his duties as Mayor,” the spokesman said.
“He will continue to devote the same time and energy building a fairer, safer and greener city for every Londoner.”

Since first Tony The Liar and then Two Tier Kier gutted it of the hereditaries – apart for the Far Left bishops – very little given it is stacked with cronies, toadies and lickspittles. It was founded to provide a balance to the lower elected house and scrutinised legislation from an independent perspective. It also used to house the Law Lords who were the top court until The Liar’s Supreme Court invention. The hereditary peers took their role seriously and acted out of public duty.
Khan also works for Bloomberg, as do many other mayors as reported by Charlotte Gille. It’s almost as if there is an organised agenda at hand!

It’s effectively cash in hand. I pay my plumber that way and now I don’t feel at all bad about it.
It is incumbent on all of us to avoid paying tax whenever possible and to assist in avoidance when circumstances permit such as paying tradesman and the like in cash.
Technically that is ‘tax evasion’ which is illegal whereas anything that avoids tax is legal such as always using your ISA allowances. But I am quite happy to pay in cash and do wonder how shocking it would be if I actually entered all the tax I pay in a year – council tax, income tax, stamp duty, withholding tax, VAT, insurance tax, road tax – and those are only the ones you can see as fuel and alcohol duty are hidden along with ‘green tax’ on your energy.
Yep I pay all my tradesmen in cash and they invariably give me a cheaper rate.

I think the writer meant “highest paid”. Not “best” paid. The man is a menace and highly damaging to London and Britain. he also costs much much more than the amounts quoted because of 24/7 security, armoured Range Rovers etc.
I don’t doubt the peerage is compensation for standing aside when the MSM decided Burnham was the man.
