Civil servants face being sanctioned if they fail to use the preferred name or gender of a transgender colleague, leaked Whitehall guidance has revealed. The Telegraph has the story.
The guidance, labelled “official sensitive” and created by the Cabinet Office, said calling a colleague by the incorrect [sic] pronouns could lead to them being disciplined.
The document outlines how fellow civil servants should treat transgender colleagues at work and includes warnings that “deliberate dead naming or misgendering to deny, mock or invalidate” a trans person would be investigated as potential misconduct.
It also includes guidance telling employees they “may not use facilities of your affirmed gender which are designated as single-sex”, the Times reported.
The leaked guidance said that it should be established whether a civil servant intentionally called someone by their pre-transition name or referred to them by the incorrect gender because of “a neurodivergent condition or memory issue”.
Ministers refused to publish the guidance that was updated after the Supreme Court ruled last year that sex in the Equality Act referred to biological sex.
The Cabinet Office also refused to share the draft policy with this newspaper.
A spokesman said at the time: “Under legislation, as has been the case under successive governments, policy which is under development is not released to ensure advice can be discussed freely without undue public interest.
“Departments are expected to update their own HR policies and these are currently under review. This guidance supports them to do that and it would be inappropriate to share while this is ongoing.”
The leak comes after the Charity Commission informed charities that they must comply with the law and not wait to receive the updated guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Certain charities had waited for the release of the code of practice from the EHRC, which is set to come into force on August 5th, before updating their policies.
On Tuesday, the Commission said: “Charities do not need to wait for the Commission’s guidance to comply with the Act and the code.
“It is the responsibility of trustees to ensure their charity is compliant… and unreasonable delays in taking steps towards compliance may be considered a breach of those responsibilities.”
The Commission will provide separate guidance on how charities should comply with the Supreme Court ruling.

This is one of many reasons that I am glad that I am retired from the NHS. Poor Jennifer Melle’s ordeal for speaking the truth is just one example of the lunacy being perpetrated by NHS senior management.
Our trip to the National Ice Centre in Nottingham was delayed by some kind of “Pride” parade. I got to wondering why sexual orientation would make for a “community” – heteros don’t have hetero parades and I don’t feel I am part of a “hetero community”. But looking at the paraders the thing they seemed to have in common was they all looked like losers and misfits. Probably they represent a tiny percentage of gays, trannies or whatever. I guess people (not me) like being in clubs, and a misfit club is as good as any.

I may be old and don’t understand these things, but I am still confused about this pronouns thing. If I meet someone and speak to them or write to them, I don’t see how it matters whether they are male or female and whether their pronouns are he, she, they or it, because I will never use those words. When talking to someone, I only use the word ‘you’, because I am addressing the person in front of me. Why on earth would I talk to an individual and say anything else, it’s just bizarre.
Gender is language, sex is biology.
“Misgender” is another abstraction to add to the intersectional lexicon of empty signifiers with which to be best normal people over the head until they accept every, freak, mockery, clown, abberation, psychiatric case, abomination as the norm, and that their views are at the “Far Right” margin.

Cue for some gender activist to use a specific gender on a random unannounced basis to claim maximum offence when others fail to recognise their latest gender.
I appear to have a neurodivergent condition- I think men are men and women are women and people who want to force me to say things I don’t believe are fascist scum.
I object vigorously to any male culturally misappropriating the female sex and vice-versa. The lived experience of a male and a female is not a commodity to be seized and faked any more than race is. Why the glaring double standard? If you do not want your sex misappropriated and faked then say so.
It’s interesting, isn’t it? I remember the row about “blacking up”, as it was then called, back in the eighties, and the removal from our screens of TV acts such as the The Black & White Minstrels. But these days, if you want to make yourself look like a member of the opposite sex, that’s apparently perfectly alright, even encouraged. Isn’t gender just as much an immutable characteristic as ethnicity? I don’t get it.
There is no difference between blackface and any other mock face. It’s an approach worth taking, I reckon. Impersonation is impersonation.

The time will soon come when those of us still using the old-fashioned terms of ‘he’ and ‘she’ will be dragged in front of a Regendering Panel to be allocated one of the 112 fantasy genders (I think it was at the last count) peddled by the likes of the BBC.
I only partly agree. Fascists had a few redeeming qualities. The current crop of malign, swamp-bottom feeders have none.
Forcing people to say things that are patently not true is intellectual terrorism.
