J.K. Rowling has threatened to fund a legal fight against a secure unit that housed a 13 year-old girl alongside older male teenagers and refused the girl’s request to move. The Telegraph has more.
Human rights inspectors found an orphaned girl – who had been transferred to St Mary’s Kenmure in Bishopbriggs, Glasgow, from England – was placed in the same accommodation block as boys aged between 15 and 17.
The girl complained about feeling unsafe, as the older boys were young offenders, but her request to move had been denied, inspectors from the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture found.
The revelations prompted Rowling to say she would be willing to fund a new round of legal action against the unit, which is used to house troubled teenagers.
Responding to a report detailing the findings in the Sunday Express, the Harry Potter author wrote on X: “Who does it hurt if we make every space mixed sex?
“This is who it hurts: the most vulnerable; those without power and influence; the invisible people politicians don’t bother to consider when chasing likes and photo ops.”
She posted a link to her J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund and added: “If this girl, or an adult acting on her behalf, wants to take action, please contact JRRWF.”
The fund offers “legal funding support to individuals and organisations fighting to retain women’s and girls’ sex-based rights in all aspects of life, including the workplace, sports and clubs, and protected single-sex spaces”, its website states.
“It provides women with the means and confidence to bring to justice strategic cases that make legal precedents, enforce existing equality law, and make positive contributions to women’s and girls’ lives.”
Two years ago, St Mary’s, which caters for up to 24 residents, was ordered by Scotland’s Care Inspectorate to stop accepting new admissions because of a serious risk to residents’ lives.

Massively off topic, but no news outlet, including our esteemed host, is discussing it. What the heck is Ursula Von Der Leyen doing at the NATO summit? The EU is a political union, not military, it has no army, navy or air force and NATO membership is a mix of countries, some of whom are in the EU, but the vast majority by population are not. It’s bad enough when you get two or three trough swillers from the EU at G7 meetings but why is she at this one?
That is shocking. She has no business being there at all, and they should kick her out.
I hope some NATO official asks her about the time she was Germany’s Defence Minister in 2015, and failed to equip the troops for a NATO exercise, so they had to put BROOMSTICKS on their tanks to resemble guns!
