The Polish Government has told its citizens to cash in on British benefits before returning home, highlighting that they are more generous than in Poland. The Telegraph has the story.
Advice published on Powroty, a Polish Government website for citizens living abroad who wish to return home, says “when leaving the UK, it is worth considering whether you are eligible for Jobseeker’s Allowance”.
Post-Brexit arrangements allow European Union citizens who acquired settled status before December 2020 to transfer some benefit payments abroad when they move to an EU country, for up to three months.
It means those returning to Europe can claim hundreds of pounds from the British taxpayer to support their job hunt, despite not searching for work in the UK.
Thousands of Poles have left Britain since Brexit, with many returning home to enjoy their country’s growing economic fortunes.
Poland is attempting to lure back citizens and professionals to sustain an extraordinary period of economic growth that has narrowed the income gap with rival Western economies and reversed a sustained period of emigration – in particular to Britain, after Poland joined the EU.
The Powroty website says: “The UK unemployment benefit is higher than the equivalent benefit paid in Poland. It’s important to apply for it before leaving. Once you return to Poland, you won’t be able to start the benefits process.”
The site, available in English and Polish, provides step-by-step instructions on how to claim UK benefits and transfer them to Poland.
MPs have called the guidance “outrageous”, saying it proves that the UK has become an international “laughing stock”.
A spokesman for the Government appeared to criticise Poland, saying Brexit benefit rules should not be treated as a “mechanism to maximise claims on British taxpayers”.
Poland has hit back at the accusation, saying Polish citizens were leaving Britain for “attractive job opportunities; the fact that the Polish economy has seen uninterrupted and dynamic economic growth over the past 28 years; the possibility of living and working among friends and family; and a high level of public safety”.
Poland’s officials hope that the nation’s rising prosperity will soon surpass that of Britain, with Donald Tusk, the Polish Prime Minister, gloating in 2024 that forecasts by the World Bank showed that “Poles will be wealthier than the British”.

I was working on the front counter of a NW London police station about 30 years ago when two European lads came in. They sounded German and had the appearance of backpackers.
They asked if I could tell them where the benefits office was.
The cynic in me immediately compelled me to say “Why do you want to know that?”
I’ll never forget their response…
“Ve haf no money and ve hear zey gif you money.”
Obviously annoyed I dismissively said “You’ve got that right. It’s down the road.”
Clearly someone else had told them that getting money from the State is a piece of pi$$ in the UK. Their advice was sound.

50 years ago, I nursed in a hospital in a town that had a large Italian population. It was customary for relatives to come over and suddenly become “ ill “ in order to have surgery and other care that they would not have been eligible for at home.
The Polish Government should be required to reimburse the UK.
In a sane world that would happen, but we are governed by anti-British idiots who think it’s their job to tax their own people, and destroy our economy, in order to give their money away to any foreign government or foreign individual who manages to access the system.
It is invisible to us but people from other countries are able to see that across our foreheads is written ‘MUG’.
I have never heard that the EU rules which the Tories enthusiastically implemented on OAP have been stopped. The rule was that anyone from the EU who lived in Britain for six months could claim the OAP. I believe they are still receiving it.
They could leave and go back home and manage their UK bank account remotely.
The reason SERPS and other paid-for OAP elements were stolen and used to increase everyone’s’ basic amount was so the EU citizens who had not paid in could get the bigger amount.
Vote Reform. Stop this nonesence. No benefits for non-Brits. Raise recovery chargers kn those who leave and make sure they cough up whenever they re-enter the jurisdiction.

But Polish citizens have been cashing in since they joined the EU in 2004 and arrived on the flood-tide of Eastern Europe migrants.
Fifteen years ago we were paying one million pounds per month to Polish citizens for children originally born in this country. I would expect the racket continues so how much we are now sending to Poland God knows.
Under EU rules Polish citizens working in the UK were entitled to send all benefits to family remaining in Poland if they exceeded Polish benefits. Michael Fallon verified this for me. I believe the status quo remains for those benefitting from the arrangement before Brexit.
Yes and they didn’t even have to prove that the children they were claiming for actually exist. Just names on a piece of paper.
If the Polish citizens are leaving Britain for “attractive job opportunities” why do they need Jobseekers Allowance?

And what makes it worse is that money is borrowed and we and our descendants will be paying interest on it and paying back the initial sum.
