The Government has signed up to a legally binding target to cut the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions by 87% by 2040, Ed Miliband has announced.
The rather bland press release from the DESNZ states:
Families and businesses across the UK will continue to reap the benefits of the clean energy transition, as the Government sets a new emissions target to further protect family finances, grow the economy and tackle the climate crisis.
As Britain faces its second fossil fuel price shock in five years due to the war in Iran, the Government is pursuing policies which deliver tangible improvements to the lives of working people – centred on getting Britain off the rollercoaster of fossil fuel markets and onto clean homegrown power.
Today (Tuesday June 2nd) the Government has set out its proposed level for the seventh Carbon Budget, which sets a science-led target of ~87% emissions reduction in the period 2038 to 2042 – endorsed by the Environmental Audit Committee and the Climate Change Committee.
It comes as an independent report from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit, supported by analysis from the Confederation of British Industries Economics, today shows that the Net Zero economy supports over one million jobs in the UK, adding £105 billion in gross value added (GVA) to the UK economy in 2025 alone, as it continues to thrive as one of the UK’s fastest- growing economic sectors.
The new target is based on evidence-based assumptions about how the country will take a consumer choice-

Paul has another article in the TCW based on an analysis by David Turver on his Eigenvalues website. He shows that Milliband has locked in huge additional subsidies and grid expenses which will not be decreased much by any proposals of the Reform or Conservative Parties. But in his comments he confirms that the huge expense of upgrading local electricty mains to the meters was not included. The team upgrading my house in London have the contract to upgrade every house from Hertfordshire to Kent and reckon that it is costing £4500 per house. They replace a 1 inch cable in the footpath with a huge 3 inch cable and cut off a lead cased copper cable replacing it with a much larger plastic covered cable which involves digging up paved front drives and roads. Almost 30 million homes to complete in the UK means £130bn. Then they are replacing smart meters with new ones which can use 4G phones. All to go on the bill or tax.
Ed’s brother David was rewarded with a million pa job after getting the Climate Change legislation through. I wonder why Ed and Boris are now so wealthy when neither of them could… Read more »
Ed! Wakey Wakey! There is no climate crisis! And anything you do will make the sq root of bugger all difference!
He’s wide awake, and knows exactly what he’s doing, you can be assured of that…
“New green jobs” is nonsense. If the same amount of energy can be produced by half the number of employed people, that is an advantage. Doubling the number involved is not.
It is in their world, as those new, hopelessly inefficient jobs are dependent on the state, this equals more power for them…
Practical reality means nothing to them…
Delusion reigns
Is there something in the genetic heritage of some politicians we have stupidly allowed to have power over the sentient majority, because around the World’s troubled regions there is one group who are determined to destroy their countries, from Zelenskiy to Netanyahu, to Milliband in their pig-headed adherence to dogmas that no sane person can sustain.
You will own nothing and be happy, you’ll be starving, freezing, possibly pumped full of one “vaccine” or another , nah the sheer lunacy of this should show any sane person that it will not work, it does not work, but hey, lets bankrupt the country because of a few psycho’s ideas, Madness.
The headline should read
Miliband Signs UK Up to 87% increase in winter deaths by 2040 or 87% job losses or 87% company collapses etc etc etc.
The only thing increasing is his obsessive illogical mindset and his bank account.
My problems with the government statement start in the very first line:
“Families and businesses across the UK will continue to reap the benefits of the clean energy transition…”
What benefits? Fuel and energy are expensive due to carbon levies and the like, general taxation is increasing so that those levies can be removed from energy bills and concealed more easily, food prices are going up for much the same reason, and jobs are being lost across swathes of industry because running costs are making us uncompetitive. Add to that the fact that we are taking productive farmland out of use to cover it with solar panels, making us more dependent on food imports, which will make us increasingly vulnerable to price fluctuations on the market and beholden to hostile foreign powers.
And, despite all this… hot weather is still hot, and wet weather is still wet.
There’s no graphite on the roof…. Same nonsense from the party faithful be it net zero or DEI.
What exactly “legally binding” in this case?
Are all future governments bound by this because I didn’t think that was possible?
Yes, that is something that has been bothering me too. I thought there was a basic principle that a government couldn’t be bound by is predecessors laws.
I suppose the new government needs to have a big enough majority to be able to change statutes without being voted down by those on opposition. Also enough time in the parliamentary calendar to enact the changes.
Existential threats need to be met in kind.
Another day, another pin-up, from the Daily Milibund?
You will be protected from man-made climate change whether you want to be or not, whether you believe it exists or not, whether you think it is a threat to you or not, you will be protected and you will pay for that protection.
Sorry.
There ARE no benefits for families and businesses from the Net Zero Insanity.
But I’m sure Red Ed expects to benefit a great deal, personally.
Horse drawn carriages next. Labor is dragging Britain back to the middle ages.
You won’t need them. In Ed’s utopia, everything you could ever need (though not necessarily everything you could ever need) will be no more than a 15-minute walk away.
Everyone stop breathing. Ed, you can start us off.
Just trying to destroy everything they can before they depart the offices of power. It will damage our industries only until the point a new government can abandon this Marxist insanity.
Here is my bold prediction.
None of this will be stopped from within. The British establishment is far too powerful and the British public too feeble.
The only way this ends if forces from outside – circumstances, a bigger strong power – forces our establishment to change course.
Until then we are struck with it. Hope I’m wrong.
The lunatic is a bare faced lier. Science led and consumer choice, what utter bollocks. The science is falling apart and he knows it and there is no consumer choice in the banning of vacuum cleaners, petrol and diesel cars, gas boilers etc.
Don’t be fooled by the deception of (former?) member of the CEN, Claire Coutinho. Her desire for a carbon audit on imports is just a rewarming of part of the LibDem CAN. Eventually these deceptive politicians will tell us, based on her audit, that they have to put more tax on essentials made abroad because of their carbon footprint.
They’re all liers looking to destroy the country for the weird benefit of their billionaire mates and centralised world organisations.
Collecting my new petrol car next Friday. I made a consumer choice …. and I’ll be doing the same when I buy a replacement for my existing gas boiler.
I admire your choice and hope you get many years of enjoyable use from the car. I don’t know how frequently you change your car – are you sure you will be able to buy a hydrocarbon vehicle next time? The plan was to ban replacement gas boilers from 2035 and while I know that’s suspended at the moment, due to low take up of alternatives, anyone putting a new boiler in today can expect that to be their last and anyone buying a new house will certainly not have the joys of instant heat and hot water from a reliable, efficient and harmless gas boiler.
“IAS” is ships chock-full with Chinese plastic tat travelling 1,000s of miles, having been manufactured using vast amounts of burnt coal and often with environmentally horrific consequences.
If we are facing a immediate environmental catastrophe we should ban Chinese imports right away.
Funny, isn’t it, how this is never on the agenda.
Instead we continue to shaft our own industrial base and sanction the use of our own fuel resources, thereby requiring ever greater volumes of Chinese products – batteries, fuel cells, EVs, solar panels – to service maddeningly bogus net zero targets.
I wonder, who could be pushing this net zero madness? Cui effing bono?
Spoiler alert: we are being played
Some quotes from Chapter 1 of Hidden Hand by clive Hamilton and Mareike Ohlberg:
‘The Chinese Communist Party is determined to transform the international order, to shape the world in its own image, without a shot being fired. Rather than challenging from the outside, it has been eroding resistance to it from within, by winning supporters, silencing critics and subverting institutions.’
‘The Party’s . . . implementation strategy is to target elites in the West so that they either welcome China’s dominance or accede to its inevitability, rendering resistance futile.’
‘Backed by its enormous economic clout, China engages in arm-twisting, diplomatic pressure, united front and “friendship” work, and the manipulation of media, think tanks and universities – all these tactics overlap and reinforce each other.’
Hidden Hand describes the CCP’s influence in the UK via the ‘48 Group Club’ (whose members include politicians such as Tony Blair), ending its section on the UK with this statement:
‘In our judgement, so entrenched are the CCP’s influence networks among British elites that Britain has passed the point of no return, and any attempt to extricate itself from Beijing’s orbit would probably fail.’
Labour are obviously totally in Peking’s pocket.
I’m curious to know what they’ve got on Starmer – probably something to do witth rentboys.
It’s quite impressive the clarity of thought, long term vision and planning they are enacting – no wonder our shortsighted politicians are being totally played…
Big shout out to all those Uniparty voters who made this possible, especially those who voted Labour. I hope you are hit the hardest economically by this – you deserve it.
Yes, I have zero sympathy for those people working in the Trade Union sectors where whole industries are being destroyed and thousands of jobs are being lost every week.
If they’re in the union, they’re supporting it. If they vote Labour, they’re responsible.
There are precedents as to what happens to countries when facts are ignored in favour of politics. Recently, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, and more distantly, Stalin’s USSR with the Lysenkoist scientific fallacy. Basically societal collapse and bankruptcy. But that is Miliband’s goal, Net Zero and climate change just a tool to collapse Britain and build a North Korean style socialist nirvana.
The North Korean regime hasn’t collapsed. With enough brainwashing, coercion and force you can keep a protection racket going indefinitely.
Britain is obviously not at the level of North Korea… yet, but it’s definitely moving in that direction. We have seen how the establishment here has reacted when the masses show signs of not playing along. Censorship, intimidation and force.
How successful the public will be in resisting this remains to be seen. What I’m seeing is an establishment that is very successful in sowing division and discord to disrupt a unified resistance to it’s policies and rule.
I wouldn’t worry, this will be in the waste paper bin before long.
Is it bare-faced lying or does the blob really believe this BS?
Cultists are motivated by the strength of their beliefs – and strong beliefs allow you to disregard facts without a care.
It’s a shame the rest of us have to suffer for their beliefs.
The Far Left have always convinced themselves they are correct no matter what evidence to the contrary exists. When we vote against them it is never the message that is wrong but how it was delivered, which brings to mind the old adage that ‘you cannot polish a turd’.
Bare-faced lying.

Milliband is playing 4D chess. Once the economy is f#cked and we’re all living in wattle huts eating gruel, all the immigrants will bugger off back to their their slightly less shitholistan countries of origin and leave us in peace to reinvent the longbow and have another at escaping serfdom.
