Sadiq Khan is a remarkable figure. He never eats humble pie: instead he eats kosher-halal-trans-offset-emissions pie, drenched in helpings of liberal gravy and festooned with rainbow-coloured edible flowers. His theme song should be:
You say jumma; I say shabat
You say eid; I say pesach
Jumma, shabat, eid, pesach
Let’s call the whole thing on.
You say knife-crime; I say what-crime?
You say Ulez; I say Net Zero
Knife-crime, what-crime, Ulez, Net Zero
Let’s call the whole thing on.
Khan is here to teach us about politics. And why not? For ‘khan’ means ruler. Khan by name, Khan by nature. And he has been interviewed by the Guardian, whereupon he gives us his wisdom about politics. Let me quote him:
Khan says the biggest lesson he has learned in his time as Mayor is to be a “coalition builder”... “I’m somebody who’s quite pugnacious. I used to be a litigation lawyer, so I’m quite adversarial,” he says. “But my experience as Mayor has taught me that actually working together achieves far more.” He says the “winning coalition” of voters that has helped him triumph three times at the polls includes “Tory Remainers, Greens, Lib Dems, Labour supporters”. “It is really important to say I am all in favour of building a coalition of the willing… if we have a similar north star, the fact that you are from a different tribe to me, that should be by the by. Coalitionof the Willing just means defeating democracy by subsumed it. Like Tony Blairs Third Way only bigger
The headline grabbed me, but after reading a few lines, my eyes gazed over and I gave up, as is usual for articles from this contributor. Can the Editor please have a word with the esteemed professor and remind him that articles are supposed to be punchy, drafted to educate, inform and entertain, not a means to convey how many obscure cross-references, “clever phrases” and quotes the author can squeeze in.
You’re so right. It’s all about a certain inhibition, which stopped the author from saying what he really wanted to say. But someone whistled before the penalty shot. Why the self-censorship? Most likely, self-preservation (what a pity, as you say, a very promising headline).
This contributor, IMnHO, one of the best. Your eyes, Ollie, haven’t glazed over. You’ve got cataracts.
Great article James. “Lawyers don’t make good politicians” – nice one. But what is a good politician?
The only thing you need to know about this traitor is, he is the see you next tuesday, who destroyed London, created a third world shithole that other countrys advise their citizens to avoid
I respect the choice of those who refuse to vote or vote for “fringe” parties on principle. But for anyone voting for “mainstream” parties, the choice is clear. Vote Reform or see this country destroyed. Hopefully we on the “far right” (lol – I’m a metro liberal) can build a coalition of the even more willing.

Remind me again just how low the turnout has been in his three elections and what percentage of the electorate actually support him as I think we are in Two Tier Kier territory again where he has the support of barely 20%.
