A Telegraph analysis reveals that a “locked-out” generation has been stuck on benefits in record numbers since the pandemic. Here’s an excerpt:
Almost one in 20 of those in their mid-20s has been on Universal Credit for at least five years, with thousands struggling to enter the workplace.
People who turned 18 in 2020 are far more likely than their predecessors to be claiming benefits, figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show.
Some 34,047 24 year-olds have been on Universal Credit continuously since 18, accounting for 4.6% of Britons who reached that age in 2020.
The figure is more than double that of two years ago, when 16,417 24 year-olds were in the same position. …

Young people who should have been starting their careers were denied exposure to the world of work because workplaces closed down, furloughed their workers or shifted to home working.
The figures will also raise questions about Labour’s failed pledge to cut welfare spending by moving more people into jobs.
Welfare spending is forecast to keep rising, topping £300 billion a year by the end of the decade, while the number of young people out of work or education has increased sharply since the pandemic.

What happened to David Cameron’s National Citizen Service (NCS) that was supposed to be the cornerstone of his “Big Society” agenda to foster social responsibility, community cohesion, and skills among 16-year-olds?
It seemed a good idea at the time.

A lot of them need to accept that they can’t get the type of job they want straight away and take any job they can get so they can show on their CV that they can hold down a job, are reliable, hardworking etc and have good references.
Care work isn’t glamourous and cleaning up shit/piss isn’t fun but it was the first full time job I had. Quite a few of the staff in the homes I worked in were young people who did the job for a year or two before moving on to their preferred career path.
Care work. Working in fast food shops preparing food or delivering it. High street retail shop work or supermarket shelf stacking. gardening work, labouring and helping out in hairdressers or barbers. Car wash work or valetting. Answering phones in call centres or office cleaning. All basic starter jobs for young British people to establish a history of attending workplace on time, come rain or shine, building experience, earning references and saving a little money for a motorbike, civil car or rent deposit. Rent! All springboards back in the day that started a life of work, savings, marriage and family for those British kids not a academically credentialled.And just look who’s getting those jobs, cheaply, illegally, or illegally cheaply. So many immigrants for 30 years and 4 million in the Brexit parliament’s Boris Wave: some in old folks’s homes to replace long-lasting care workers sacked for being unvaxxed. Immigration. Replacement. Debasement. This country is not run for the British adult population, and certainly not for its youth.
I started before my teens “cleaning up shit/piss” from animals on my father’s small farm. Clearing out grain cleaners is not much better. Loading sugar beet at 5:30 am in winter in the fens was definitely worse.

Most of us remember that this site started out as Lockdown Sceptics. Indeed in the grim, early days, it was one of the few supportive voices for those of us who thought the whole lockdown experiment was barmy and disastrous. It’s not the “long shadow of Covid” – the youth of 1969 didn’t suffer from the long shadow of Hong Kong flu. It’s the long shadow of lockdown.
Incidentally, I am still waiting for my MP (Marsha de Cordova) to respond to, or even acknowledge, my several first class recorded delivery letters of the lockdown days, urging her to oppose that dreadful experiment. Let’s hope she comes round to my doorstep before Thursday, eh.

The lunatics in the Not-a-Conservative-Party shut down the private sector; encouraged welfarism and then – to counter the disaster they’d created – imported 4 million low-wage/non-working welfare claimants.
They should NEVER be allowed to govern ever again.
