The violent attack on Jewish people in Golders Green on Wednesday, which is being treated by police as a terrorist incident, is horrifying but also painfully unsurprising. It follows a murderous attack on Heaton synagogue in Manchester and a series of arson attacks on synagogues and Jewish property.
It also follows the consistent harassment of Jewish people in the street, the workplace, at universities, in hospitals and schools since the October 7th attacks.
That Britain is experiencing a national emergency, a crisis of racism, is no longer in doubt. Yet, for many Jewish people, there is a sense that a national problem of this scale is not receiving the focus and attention it should and that not enough is being done to arrest the spread of Jew-hate.
We can expect well-meaning condemnations of antisemitism from politicians. We should also recognise that the Government has provided more funding for Jewish security and the police have been active in their investigation of recent attacks. But it is not enough, nowhere near enough.
Kemi Badenoch was right to say in a recent interview that had the level of violence and racism Jewish people are facing been experienced by another minority group in the UK the sense of outrage and the prominence in our national conversation would be very different. Many Jews would agree and this is contributing to a sense of isolation and deep sadness in the community. It is leading more and more Jews to retreat into the safe spaces provided by other Jews where they feel confident they will not face abuse or worse. Others are making plans to leave.Many British Jews have been tracing the pathway of this poison over recent years with a growing sense of trepidation and anxiety. They saw the signs from October 7 onwards and feared the spread of hate. They witnessed posters of kidnapped babies being torn down from walls. They could see and hear the hateful anti-Semitism on the marches through London. They watched the chanting of death threats on the stage at Glastonbury, they felt the pain of their children being bullied and isolated at school simply because they were Jewish. And now they watch, in horror and fear, as Jewish people experience violent attacks on the streets and their places of prayer are set on fire.

I am a pacifist and believe violence of any kind is never to be encouraged, but violence, suppression and blatant disregard of anyone will create resentment and hatred. One thing that particularly strikes me is the lack of a violent backlash from the Jewish people against the Muslims. It may just be down to the Woke Left’s encouragement of antisemitism which emboldens the Muslims, but I think there’s more to it than that. Greater tolerance and humanity, for a start.

Most of the actual violence is carried out by recent imports: Muslims from the Middle East, Asia and Africa. I don’t know why these Jews who insist on staying in London aren’t well versed in Krav Maga or some other type of martial art. I’ve seen a couple of media articles saying that the police are investigating the possibility that, via various intermediaries, the Iranian Government has been paying people to carry out arson attacks against Jewish premises.
