One in five teenagers in the UK do not share their political views due to a fear of being cancelled, according to a new report from the Economist Educational Foundation. Sky News has the story.
A survey by the Economist Educational Foundation found that 22% of 15 to 17 year-olds had stopped themselves sharing political opinions because they were worried about criticism, along with 20% of 10 to 14 year-olds.
Nearly one in four of the 4,000 students aged between 10 and 17 who took part in the survey said they have been asked to stop voicing their political views at school.
The results also showed that 44% of 15 to 17 year-olds said they would not feel ready to vote in the next election.
It comes after the Government introduced plans last year to lower the voting age to 16, enabling up to 9.5 million more people to have their say at the next General Election.
The Economist Educational Foundation’s Chief Growth Officer, Tiffany Smyly, said the fear of being cancelled could push teenagers to online “fringe” communities where their views could become more extreme.
She warned: “If teenagers are worried about being cancelled, then they are not going to be sharing their viewpoints at school or with friends.
“Instead, they are likely to go into chat rooms or forums that do allow them to share a fringe opinion, and that might be where their views become more extreme.
“We need to channel young people’s political curiosity in more positive ways.”

It is not just the young folk, many in the public sector have to keep quiet or lie about their views at work.
I remember the number of photographers with long lenses at the Brexit rallies, hoping to capture a face to exploit and at my first strike protest in the 1980s.
One of the few benefits of being in my 70s, is I don’t give a toss what others think or say. Truth be told, I never did.
However, my heart goes out to the younger generations who have to deal with a perverse vitriol born over the last two decades. The sad thing is, I ‘m sure those on the far left are fine and dandy.
I guess it would help if schools weren’t such cess pits of rabid leftism, and basic simple patriotism wasn’t treated as pre-crime.
Not much patriotism or silence going on in this school by the looks of it. Did Ireland have a recruitment drive in Nigeria or something? There’s so many from that particular country.

And when they move on into the world of work, they will find that many colleagues do not take part in political arguments in the office, or wherever.
We can’t really blame teenagers for being hesitant about expressing their views, when even experienced patriotic political candidates are routinely shouted down, as Pakistani Muslim Anas Sarwar & his Ethnic African ally demonstrated in the following clip from Dan Wootton’s interesting news video at about the 20:14 minute mark. The Third World Ethnics & their Communist Enablers do not seem to grasp the basic tenets of political debate, and routinely ask their opponents a question, and instead of letting the opponents answer, they just keep shouting the same question over & over to silence their opponents…
