After the horrifying killing of US Right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, the world’s media has turned to the potential motive and political leanings of his alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson.
As the investigation unfolds and more facts emerge, the picture of what lay behind Robinson’s alleged killing is becoming steadily clearer. On Saturday, Republican Utah Governor Spencer Cox told the Wall Street Journal: “It’s very clear to us and to the investigators that this was a person who was deeply indoctrinated with Leftist ideology.”
Given Kirk was a Christian conservative and leading MAGA figure, tipped as a future President, the most likely assumption was always that his murderer would turn out to be on the far Left, and all the subsequent evidence about the shooter has so far seemed to confirm this. Early on, a family member told the FBI that Mr Robinson had grown increasingly political in recent years and that he had accused Kirk of “spreading hate” during a recent family dinner (“spreading hate” being a typical angry Leftist charge against outspoken Right-wing figures). Investigators also believe he may have been in a relationship with his transgender roommate, a male who has reportedly been taking cross-sex hormones (and who is being “incredibly co-operative” with law enforcement). Axios reports that authorities are investigating whether Robinson believed Kirk’s views on gender identity were 'hateful' to people like Robinson’s transgender roommate, citing six sources familiar with the case. There is not an ounce of true intelligence involved, other than by the humans writing its algorithms, whatever their motivations are.
AI means artificial intelligence and neither augmented imbecility nor automaton-incontinence.
There’s also not “intelligence” involved in writing it’s algorithms because it doesn’t have any algorithms in the proper sense. It’s some kind of system designed to reconfigure itself in unpredictable (to humans) ways in response to input fed into it and generate output as side effect. Which means “a program where nobody actually knows what it’ll do for which reasons.”
I’ve debated Grok ( AI chatbot on Twitter ) in the past and it was coming up with all sorts of biased garbage you’d expect if you did a Google search. It was regarding the reported casualty figures in Gaza since the jihadi attack in 2023. It kept using Al-Jazeera, BBC, CNN and the WHO as sources. I came to the conclusion that AI is in fact the polar opposite of what it’s touted as: genuinely stupid. Another example: I did a quick search on why my venus fly trap was dying* ( this breaks all previous records of house plants dying on me ) despite buying it 3 days prior, and the first AI search came up with: “Do not feed your plant dead bugs, mince pies or turkey”. I mean, WTF is that all about?? 😮

Of course it is. What’s presently making waves as AI is so-called large language models. The basic idea behind them is that loads of texts are analyzed to build a statisical model of which words tend to follow which other words in existing text and create new texts with the same statistic properties. The outcome is some text sufficiently imaginative humans can read sense into, ie, this so-called AI is basically a very complicated hoax designed to exploit the human tendency to interpet sense into texts which don’t make any. At best, it’s going to be a slightly sub-par rehash of all real humans already wrote on some topic.
Apparently they play chess and a game called “go” very well. I think the “go” bot was not programmed at all, just told to go and play a lot. The machines cannot be beaten by humans now though I think they are much less energy efficient than a brain.
I don’t think LLMs play either chess or go at all because that cannot be done by auto-generating texts which is their purpose. But nice try to change the topic to something completely different.
I’ll ignore this attempt at freelance AI marketing as I already know you’re a true believer.
