A string of fires at a London asylum hotel has been linked to lithium batteries used by migrant couriers. The Telegraph has the story.
The Telegraph has established that the London Fire Brigade (LFB) has been called six times to a single hotel housing hundreds of male migrants since 2023.
One of those blazes was caused by a lithium battery bursting into flames while charging in an asylum seeker’s room. The battery pack was believed to have been used to power a migrant’s e-bike used to deliver fast food and groceries ordered through app companies, including Deliveroo and Just Eat.
It has now emerged that migrants in Home Office hotels found with “dangerous” e-bike batteries indoors can have the devices confiscated.
The increasing popularity of e-bikes amongst asylum seekers working for courier delivery companies has raised the prospect their batteries pose an increasing and serious fire risk.
It was recently revealed how some asylum seekers are paying off people smuggler debts by illegally working as bike couriers and making up to £500 a month.
Video footage from the London hotel showed couriers going to and from the premises fitting and removing battery packs on their e-bikes.
A source has now shared evidence which shows electrical fittings, including plug sockets and concealed wiring in the walls, have been scorched in blazes at the hotel, suggesting faulty electrical equipment was responsible.
