Over in an obscure online ‘newspaper’ known as the Guardian, Environment Editor Damian Carrington claims that: “A huge 89% majority of the world’s people want stronger action to fight the climate crisis.” This figure gives its name to a project that Carrington claims will unify newsrooms around the world, to “highlight the fact that the vast majority of the world’s population wants climate action”. The polling and the project, however, come amid a furious and desperate attempt to re-engage the public with an issue that manifestly has fallen off global and national political agendas. Put simply: the Green Blob is doubling down on a desperate attempt to weaponise both the media and media regulators.
Consider, for instance, the claim that 89% of the world’s population want, as the Guardian wants, “stronger climate action”. If so, it would be the most remarkable consensus in all of human history. Never before have so many been so united. Not even by religion. And so all that it would take for such a consensus to turn into political action would be to establish political parties to reflect that unity, right?
