The Mayor of the anti-car Labour-run London council of Lambeth – the first UK local authority to declare a climate emergency in 2019 – has boasted of being driven around in a taxpayer-funded limousine. The Telegraph has more.
John-Paul Ennis, the 27-year-old Lambeth Mayor, discussed the perks of the job – including transport in a “nice car”, which he described as a “vibe” – on TikTok.
Mr Ennis told DJ AG, an influencer, that the title was “mad” and “sick”, and said it was “pretty nice” to wear the ceremonial chain that came with it.
In 2019, Lambeth imposed higher parking fees after becoming the first local authority to declare a climate emergency. It is the most expensive borough in London in which to park per hour at £13.23, according to the Times.
In the social media clip, Mr Ennis is asked by DJ AG if he could get a free permit because of the prices in the south London borough. The Mayor suggests that he parks at Tesco for a few hours and then “move the car around”.
Since its climate emergency declaration, the council has dramatically expanded the use of controlled parking zones in areas where parking was previously free.
It has also spent £3.4 million on controversial low traffic neighbourhoods in the past five years, despite a financial strategy report last year predicting a budget deficit of nearly £70 million over the next four years.
