Boris Johnson is said to have devised a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether he should plunge the country into another lockdown, with just under 1,000 Covid deaths a week enough to warrant further restrictions.
The latest data from the ONS reveals that just 84 people died of Covid in England + Wales in week ending June 11, less than 10% of deaths from flu and pneumonia ad one of the lowest weekly totals since the pandemic began.
The number of deaths registered in England and Wales has been below the five-year average for seven consecutive weeks. This may be because deaths were "brought forward" by the pandemic.
The number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending March 26th was 5% below the five-year average, and marks the third consecutive week of "negative excess deaths".
The chart on the Government's coronavirus dashboard showing the number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test is misleading – it understates the severity of the first wave and overstates the severity of the second.
The number of weekly deaths in England and Wales for the w/e March 19th was the lowest since 2014, according to David Spiegelhalter and Anthony Masters.
