We are going to Germany in two weeks and need PCR tests. Does anyone have any cheap providers with low cycle threasholds? Germany accepts lateral flow tests I think. I find it all very confusing. Would be grateful for any advice.

Do they ask for proof you booked Day 2/8 tests?
I'm thinking, my company has a free testing programme where they can send free weekly tests (they're PCR) so can I use that to show that I will do the tests when I'm back (even if I have no intention to)?

Yes they do on check in to return.
They need confirmation of the tests and it *has* to be via one of the providers on the governments approved list so unless your work is one of those, it wont be accepted and you'll be denied boarding.

Part of the reason is they want the ability to sequence every positive returning positive if required and the other, bigger part is to make money and make travel inconvenient as they really don't want anyone doing it.

I, uh, know someone who has faked the "Day 2 and day 8" bookings multiple times this year and not had a problem. All you have is a confirmation email, and there are 100s and 100s of providers, and an ever-changing list, so there's no way they really verify whether it's real or not.

Same goes for PCR tests. Just print/pdf one yourself at home.

New forum software is terrible....

That isn't actually true, try and fill out a few dummy PLF forms - It rejects submissions where the code number from the testing supplier isnt recognised.

You can play with this by creating a PLF and entering in random digits and letters.  Only recognised format tests are accepted.

So you'd need to be aware of the code format for each testing provider you "use" to get past that stage.

Inbound this week the PLFs, test papers and pre-flight antigen were all checked on initial check in to fly back to the UK.

After arrival, not so much.

One thing the system doesn't seem to recognise is "Socialist PCR" - it doesnt care if you're going back to Scotland or Wales and haven't bought their one choice only massively expensive test.  It accepts any of the recognised English providers that are 1/3 the cost.
