My 23 year old son came back from Germany and quarantined at our house. They phoned him a few times on his mobile and asked him if he was quarantining - he said yeah. They asked him if he had done his day 2 test - he said the testing kit hadn't arrived on time (although he had no intention of doing it) and they said OK. On day 7 we were out at the shops together and when we were walking back we saw someone in a high-vis jacket leaving our front gate. My daughter said that it was track and trace and they asked if my son was home. She had said no, he's out and they just said "oh, well tell him someone is likely to call around again". At this point my son thought it best to play safe (except for Church on Sunday - he says that this isn't something to render to Caesar) and someone from track & trace came round again on day 9 around 8.30 in the morning. They said - are you quarantining? He said, yeah. They said have you done test on day 2 and 8? and he said "no - the testing company has problems" and the guy said "that sounds about right - have a good day".

Do they ask for proof you booked Day 2/8 tests?
I'm thinking, my company has a free testing programme where they can send free weekly tests (they're PCR) so can I use that to show that I will do the tests when I'm back (even if I have no intention to)?

Yes they do on check in to return.
They need confirmation of the tests and it *has* to be via one of the providers on the governments approved list so unless your work is one of those, it wont be accepted and you'll be denied boarding.

Part of the reason is they want the ability to sequence every positive returning positive if required and the other, bigger part is to make money and make travel inconvenient as they really don't want anyone doing it.

I have travelled 4 times having to quarantine. 2 times in 2020 whilst there was no testing requirement. During these 2 quarantines I was never called or checked, my husband was called once.
2 times in 2021. First time (not a lot of people travelling) in April. I was called every day up to day 5 and visited on day 6, despite the fact I was actually free after my day 5 test to release test.
Second time (June) I was called once, my husband was called once.

So in short very varied,
You have to book day 2 and 8 testing before re-entering the U.K., but these tests are an absolute joke. I am still waiting for my day 8 test results now 12 days after taking the test. No use to anyone, so money for old rope!

Friend of mine never had his 2nd test result back at all. That was in March/April.

He had to get special allowance to be allowed "out" to walk to the nearest priority box because it was a bank holiday, did that, never heard a thing.
2 weeks later he chased it up just for curiosity and got "oh, maybe it never arrived or got misplaced. Don't worry about it".
