The United Nations has told Britain to build statues of African people to atone for the slave trade, following a vote in which UN member states agreed to demand reparations from former slave-trading nations. The Telegraph has more.
It is one of a series of measures proposed by lawyers, who have written a report for the organisation setting out what former slave-trading nations should do. The advice follows a vote in March, in which UN member states voted to demand reparations.
The legal experts said the UK should create public monuments that “honour the contributions of people of African descent”.
This “reparatory justice” guidance was created by the UN’s Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). The committee insisted that Britain and other former slave-trading nations had a moral and legal “obligation to repair” the damage of slavery.
To help atone for slavery, former colonial powers have been told “public spaces should honour the contributions of people of African descent”, which could include installing artworks and statues.
UN experts have supported the demand with reference to a report on the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, which targeted statues of people linked to slavery. They included one of Edward Colston, who was a slave trader, which was toppled in Bristol.
The report said protesters who vandalised statues of such men had been unfairly “disparaged” in the media, and their cause had been unduly made out to be “obscure” and “Left-wing”.
UN insiders have said the exact form public honours for Africans could take would be for individual member states to decide.
The report states that, in addition to celebratory public works, there should be a focus on memorials that “clearly acknowledge the wrongs of those who supported or benefited from historical atrocities”.
While touching on the need for financial compensation, the recommendations – largely devised by CERD panellists Gay McDougall, a US lawyer, and Pela Boker-Wilson, a Liberian legal expert – said reparations were not just about transferring funds, but also reshaping society.
The proposed measures also cover areas such as enforcing hate speech laws and reviewing the content of children’s school textbooks. The UN guidance states that reparations should take the form of policies “eradicating xenophobia towards migrants and others perceived as such”.

Rodney Mace estimates that before the voting reform act of 1832, only 1 per cent of the population could vote and that the Reform Act only extended the franchise to 7 per cent of the population, none of them women. Slavery was abolished in 1834. So we are all being blamed for slavery that was controlled by laws over which our ancestors had no control.

The worrying thing is that the so called educated people in the UN actually believe this crap, or is it just self hatred? The black slaves who were sold by their black owners to the Europeans and who then eventually became free once outside of Africa – did they benefit from the slave trade? I assume they would never have become free if they had stayed in Africa…
Gets very complicated, this… I wouldn’t be at all surprised if slavery is still a Very Big Thing in many African countries.
