Anthony Fauci privately accepted that COVID-19 did not originate from the Wuhan wet market despite being instrumental in pushing the natural origin narrative and suppressing the lab leak theory, his diary reveals. The Telegraph has more.
Newly released diary entries by Dr Anthony Fauci show that as early as January 2020, he privately held a different theory about the pandemic’s origins which was in conflict with the narrative he helped advance to the public.
Dr Fauci wrote that the first COVID-19 infection was “not connected to the market” which he said was an “amplifier” rather than the source.
Despite this, Dr Fauci repeatedly stated three months later that he did not believe the theory that the virus could have escaped from a laboratory in China, the counter-narrative at the time.
The emails were released by Rand Paul, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, a Republican who has long clashed with Dr Fauci, 85.
The two are set to come face to face again on Wednesday when Dr Fauci, who retired as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in 2022, appears before the committee.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Paul accused Dr Fauci of a “betrayal of the public trust” and claimed he “engaged in a cover-up from the very beginning of the pandemic”.
Among the hundreds of pages of diary entries made public is one entry from Jan 26th 2020, nearly two months before the World Health Organisation declared that COVID-19 was a pandemic.
Dr Fauci wrote: “It now appears using epi data and genomic data that the first infection was in early December [2019] and was not connected to the (wet) market.
“Early on, the Chinese were saying that there is no human-to-human transmission and all the original 27 cases were from the market.
“Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier.”
Despite this, during a briefing at the White House in mid April 2020, Dr Fauci said that the science at the time was “totally consistent with a jump of a species from animal to human”.

Fauci was funding the Gain of Function experiments. You don’t pay for something if you don’t know what you’re getting for your money.
He, and I expect the cohort of $cientists he closely collaborated with, knew full well what the virus was; where it originated and, I fully expect, the consequences of its release (deliberate or accidental).
Fauci was a smart political operative. I’m not convinced his communications and diary were not carefully curated to give the appearance of him being in the dark as to covid origins, while covering for his friends at Ecohealth Alliance.
