Five Just Stop Oil protesters, including Roger Hallam, one of its co-founders, have been jailed for conspiring to organise protests that blocked the M25 motorway. The Mail has more.
Roger Hallam, an environmental activist who was one of the founding members of the group, agreed to causing disruption to traffic by having protesters climb onto gantries over the motorway for four successive days in November 2022.
The 58-year-old was joined by Daniel Shaw, 38, Louise Lancaster, 58, Lucia Whittaker De Abreu, 35, and Cressida Gethin, 22, as they were all sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday.
Hallam was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment while the remaining four defendants were each handed four years’ imprisonment.
Prosecutors alleged the protests, which saw 45 people climb up the gantries, led to an economic cost of at least £765,000, while the cost to the Metropolitan Police was more than £1.1 million.
They also allegedly caused more than 50,000 hours of vehicle delay, affecting more than 700,000 vehicles, and left the M25 “compromised” for more than 120 hours.
Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward KC told the court that a police officer suffered a concussion and bruising after being knocked off his motorbike in traffic caused by one of the protests on November 9th 2022.
All five defendants joined a Zoom call on November 2nd 2022, in which discussions were held about the planned protests, based off “what was said expressly and what could be inferred”, and were aiming to recruit others for the protests on the call, Ms. Ledward told the court.
A journalist from the Sun newspaper, who had joined the call pretending to be interested in the protest, managed to record some of it and passed the recordings on to the police.
Judge Christopher Hehir said the Zoom call showed “how intricately planned the disruption was and the sophistication involved”, and was “compelling evidence” of the existence of a conspiracy.
There was “extensive organisation and planning” for the protests and each defendant had a “significant role” in the conspiracy, Ms. Ledward said.
The defendants were convicted by a jury of conspiracy intentionally to cause a public nuisance, contrary to section 78 of the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and Section 1 of the Criminal Law Act 1977, on July 11th.
TV naturalist Chris Packham, who was outside the courthouse, was not happy.
At this point I feel physically sick, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt that in this way ever before. I’ve just watched what can only be described as judicial thuggery, a total disregard for any mitigation circumstances when it came to sentencing. Disproportionately high sentences given to peaceful climate protesters in a world which is on fire. In a world which is burning and flooding. In a world in the midst of a biodiversity crisis.
Worth reading in full.

Profanity and abuse will be removed and may lead to a permanent ban.
I might have known that Packham would be in there getting his snout in the limelight. Further to that I hope Hallam comes out with a rear end like the Mersey Tunnel.
Ha, more like the Japanese flag.
Five years may sound like a lot to some but is he only going to serve 40% of that? Hallam and Packham debunk, once again, the misogynists’ notion that it’s only white, female middle-class fruitcake cultists that are public enemy number one. Well two out of three ain’t bad…LOL.
Correct—-You will probably see him back on the street in 9 months.—-But if government don’t get a grip on these morons then pretty soon our petrol cars will be set alight and our shopping trolleys ripped from our hands because there is a sirloin steak in it. STOP them now or people are going be seriously hurt or killed ,because when you believe stuff that isn’t true you are capable of anything.
Absolutely. Cult members are capable of anything ( as much evidence demonstrates. I mean, just look at Islam and all the stabbings etc ) and are all a danger to the public, irrespective of the context.
I do think for the sake of gender equality though they need to shove that godawful Thunburg behind bars too. I’m very confident she’s made a pact with the Devil because she still resembles a twelve year old. I still think of her as a girl, not a woman, because she’s literally not aged a day in the last decade. Very suss…
Thunberg is the UN planet savers useful idiot, stuck up at podiums to do the Eco Socialists dirty work for them, because she has an ability to talk. I can only describe it as child abuse.
Except for the tits which were quite prominently displayed in one photo of her being carried off by some burly coppers. Even so, a challenging one, as some comic said.
Yup even those petrol pumps they were vandalising are someone’s property.
That is not even remotely amusing, just a crude, disgusting reference to horrific, Satanic sodomite rape in prisons.
So what?
Maybe that’s what you get for unamusing, crude, disgusting reference to non-Science and lies?
The alleged damages works out at £15 per hour. A bit low wouldn’t you say. Add in journeys not attempted and it was a hugely expensive disruption.
how could it possibly be that police time costs were higher than costs to motorists. They just stood around, as I recall. Overtime must have been a joy.
I heard them banging on about this on Radio 4 this morning. If they were anti-Lockdown protesters, they wouldn’t even get a mention on the Radio. They want to choose what type of vandalism is allowed, and what is not, typical of the Left. But I defend their free speech and a right to a fair trial and Jury of Peers. “Jurors have an absolute right to acquit a defendant according to their conscience”.
I have listened to Hallam. He is typical member of the brainwashed dreamer class of eco activist that take worst case scenario’s from unvalidated climate models and multiply that by 10 and decide that represents reality and what is really going to happen in the years ahead. We cannot have energy policy dictated by easily manipulated half wits like this, and we cannot allow these half wits to disrupt society in the way they are doing because when you believe things with religious zeal like them that are not true then you are liable to get more and more extreme with your disruptions till people get hurt or even worse, get killed. ——–It is bad enough having an eco moron like Miliband now in charge of energy. He does not need any assistance from useful idiots like Just Stop Oil or Extinction rebellion.
Jeremy Vine talking about the Prison sentences for these protestors. Of course different opinions but on message regarding, “something must be done about the climate crisis”….I just though to myself, no, I disagree with the premise of the c02 argument. Can’t they have just one proper sceptic, just for one day!
“Climate Crisis” is the language of POLITICS, not of SCIENCE. —–But the UK already has more draconian climate policies than other countries and we are forcing ourselves in law to reduce emissions. What more do morons like Jeremy Vine and Chris Packham want? These nutjobs would have us back in the Stoneage where they would be screaming that we are running out of stones.
Their actions highlight their ignorance of the Laws of Physics, the explanations that CO2 plays a negligible to no part in controlling the temperature and that it’s the Sun that plays a major part in influencing the climate, cloud cover, initiating major storms and triggering earthquakes.
Stopped listening to Vine years ago, its his opinion, or no opinion, and you don’t even get past the researcher if you differ, totally biased.
Hallam isn’t just brainwashed – he’s a pathological nutcase with a disturbing hatred of humanity.
A lethal combination. If these people did what they do in China (the world’s biggest emitter of CO2) they would be breaking rocks in a gulag
Is it just me, or does it seem that a switch has been flicked somewhere and some modicum of commonsense is being shown. It’s almost as if TPTB need us to get onboard with a Labour government.
Possibly, but it may only be a temporary tactic and then they will hit and hit hard at a time of their choosing. That is the Fabian’s modus operandi.
YEEEEES! and make them pay all the above mentioned costs of their stupidity
You’d have to have a heart of stone to not allow yourself a little chuckle at the sentences doled out. Richly deserved! The icing on the cake was Packham’s response that he was “not happy”. Personally, I’d’ve like to have seen the perps put in the stocks for a few hours, with free rotten veg’ and eggs available for those inconvenienced by these morons the opportunity for a little retribution.
I think Packham’s response speaks to the level of entitlement and arrogance they all seem to demonstrate, whereby they think they can pull all these crazy stunts, disrupting and endangering lives, destroying property etc, and just get away with it with a smack on the wrist at most. However, if Hallam’s sentence is designed to work as a deterrent I’m not sure how effective it’ll be. Especially if he walks in 2 years or less. They’ll all just treat it as a badge of honour and doing a small amount of time will only result in elevating their virtue-signaling self-righteousness even further. Nevertheless they do need to keep getting sent to jail though. It might just put some of them off behaving like prats in future.
PACKHAM ————You have your silly point of view about this prosecution because you clearly think the “world is on fire”- ————IT IS NOT.—- If you are going to spout evidence free drivel like that then you deserve to be treated like what you are — A MORON
Packham must provide evidence – scientific evidence. His thinking is of the same quality of a witch finder.
What mitigating circumstances might you be referring to, Mr Packham? A belief in a good cause that you happen to agree with? Unbelievable!
Chunts !! Surprising that they are doing Porridge though !
Sorry for off topic. Looks like there is going to be another drive to introduce digital IDs. Now labour never mentioned that in their manifesto?
Keep an eye out for it being sneaked through as part of some ‘security’ scheme.
I know and that fills ne dread.
Tony Bliar is behing this- poisonous git that he is. I do not have the words to heap enough vitriol upon his head.
Major Global IT OUTAGE , just occurring
What a Surprise !! “NOT”, Didn’t manage to kill Trump so “AV”some of this Peasant’s !!
It’s more of a problem for the global corporations like Amazon and Microsoft. There are quite a few IT professionals that can see the serious practical pitfalls of putting all your data and systems in ‘the cloud’, or rather on someone else’s computers that could be anywhere on the planet. Everything was brought down by a software patch which was supposed to fix issues. As this is all on software produced by Bill’s old company I hope people make the connection with Microsoft patching and medical ‘patching’ such as the endless boosters. Like an aircraft, software should be written to work without needing endless patching and let’s return to traditional virus derived vaccines (fully tested) where you just get one shot, for life.
It’s to discourage the others, Packham – perhaps including yourself.
Yes my initial glee has given way to – If these mugs have got 5 years ( what’s in store for Tommy Robinson next week ) & us proles in future protests !
Packham is a fool. If you look at the statues of Themis atop many of our court buildings, you will see she holds a scale to weigh the facts and the arguments, a sword for retribution, and she is blind-folded. This demonstrates that once you stop judging the law by the facts and arguments, then it is just opinions and beliefs. The law has to operate on a sound base of truth, otherwise it is worth nothing, which is exactly what Mr Packham would like it to.

Police running away in Leeds.
What an utter embarrasment.

I have looked at this and it is utterly shameful.
Starkey had a good take on that last night.

More fuel on the fire of the multicultural cesspit.
“…peaceful climate protesters in a world which is on fire. In a world which is burning and flooding. In a world in the midst of a biodiversity crisis.”
Whatever, mate. I know that the number of people who still believe this crock of nonsense is growing smaller, by the hour.
“a world in the midst of a biodiversity crisis.”
You need to get out in the countryside Mr Packham, it’s packed with biodiversity – if you ignore the bird choppers that is.
Growing smaller by the hour – let’s hope so.
“TV naturalist Chris Packham, who was outside the courthouse, was not happy.
At this point I feel physically sick”
I’ll bet he felt sick. Knowing that if he finds any balls and decides to ‘lead the way’ at a future disruption event he could be looking at similar porridge time it’s an absolute certainty that he will need a period of time to ‘reflect’. The thought of being out of the limelight and losing his magnificent BBC sinecure would be enough to curdle the stomach contents of any woketard grifter.
Obviously there will be an appeal and doubtless a judge more in touch with the $cience will be installed but at least there will be a nagging worry installed in the minds of all eco ‘martyrs.”
I love it. Next.
How about sentencing Packham to live entirely on renewables and a vegan diet. Everything he uses must be solar or wind powered and not connected to the grid, in any way. He must also grow his own food and cannot have any food that comes from any modern food production, including beer or wine. If it is wine from anywhere in the world he can have that provided if has been delivered by either sail boat and horse. The horses must be fed on hay that has been cut by hand and delivered by horse. Etc. etc.
A remarkably civilised solution to the Packham problem.
The schadenfreude is strong with this one
£765 000 economic cost? Missing two noughts I think.
I think we should spare a thought for poor, distressed Packham as reality impinges itself on his ivory tower.
I don’t really. He needs to do some real science instead of the fluffy green counterfeit stuff.
Good. Now let’s have similar jail time for all the thugs who slashed our historic paintings, glued themselves to the King’s highways, smashed the windows of banking establishments, sprayed dust over the bride and groom at a wedding, threw our historic statues into the river, and vandalised our historic monuments, from Stonehenge to the Magna Carta, Wimbledon tennis, even the flowers at the Chelsea Flower Show, and the dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum.
They were careful to leave all Welsh, Scottish & Irish historic monuments and traditions untouched, of course, as well as Chinese and Indian historic monuments and traditions in China and India. Only “England & the English” are the target.
The sentence is misconceived. They should be condemned to study in prison and acquiring proper university degees in chemistry, biology and geography. Release on obtaining 1st class honours degrees.
Didn’t get long enough imo, they put countless lives at risk, and Packham needs medical help, as clearly not living on the same planet as the rest of us.
Sadly I bet there’ll be out within a few weeks.
Is there anyone less informed and more annoying that Packham? Well, okay, Mad Ed Millibacon gives him a run for his morning.
Chris Packham needs to get a life. He is the author of his own demise.
Packham: “Disproportionately high sentences given to peaceful climate protesters in a world which is on fire. In a world which is burning and flooding. In a world in the midst of a biodiversity crisis.”
He joins the UN chief’s “Global boiling” with hyperbole so out of kilter with reality.
This will only create martyrs of them and is far too harsh. It would be much better if we could only be told the truth about Net Zero and then these people might actually become irrelevant. Simply locking people up is not the answer and will probably eventually lead to more disruption. We need to take away the reason for these people to believe that they are so righteous in the first place, after all punishing people for what they believe is the noble thing to do because that is what they have been told by their government, which is still pushing Net Zero, is just crazy.
Packham is mad. Period.
The prison sentence was because they broke the law. Anarchy is never in the public interest – never. I challenge any elected politician to contradict that statement.
Honestly, though, you’d have to have a heart of stone not to laugh…
